ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - More and more people in the Kurdistan Region are reading English-language books, especially amongst the youth.
English titles are in demand at the 17th International Book Fair in Erbil, which kicked off on Wednesday.
'I mostly read books in English. Since childhood, I would watch English materials - YouTube, movies, and channels - and I would also mostly read English books because my curriculum is in English,' Malak Bilal, a student, told Rudaw's Horvan Rafaat at the fair on Friday.
Students Dler and Yousef Bayiz, who came from Duhok, also said they read English books, finding it easier to understand the English text in scientific books.
Bookstore owners say they have tried to make all the latest titles from the United States, the United Kingdom, and European countries available to readers.
'Because of the curriculum available in our country and the English-medium private schools, readers in the English language have increased. There are people who translate books from Kurdish, but it is not like the original book in English,' said Hussein Salim, the owner of Haval Bookstore in Erbil.
Of the 412 vendors at the fair, only five are specialized in English-language titles, but they are the most in-demand.
The fair, organized by the al-Mada Foundation for Media, Culture and Arts, runs for 11 days. Some 50 publishers from 22 countries are participating in the book fair, according to spokesperson Bewar Perasali.

On June 9, 2025, the website of the Samidoun Prisoner Solidarity Network, which is Designated a terrorist by the U.S., Canada, and other countries, published a summary of its online "international seminar" with Hamas Political Bureau official Basem Naim.[1] The event was attended by "Tariq el-Tahrir Student and Youth Network, activists from the Palestinian Women's Movement – Alkarama, representatives of the Anti-Imperialist Front, trade unionists and political activists from the Masar Badil: Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement, as well as activists from over 24 countries across Europe, North and South America, and the Arab region and beyond."[2] During the seminar, Naim delivered a speech that was translated live into English and Spanish, calling for international support for the Palestinian resistance, saying: "The battle in Gaza is not only a Palestinian one, but an international battle against colonialism, fascism, and ethnic cleansing. The International Coordinator of Samidoun, Charlotte Kates, also spoke at the online event. Kates is married to Khaled Barakat, who has been identified by the U.S. government as a senior member of the PFLP. He is also designated terrorist by the U.S. and Canada. This is not the first time Samidoun has lent its international platform to Hamas propaganda targeting international youth. In June 2024, Samidoun livestreamed an interview with Hamas Political Bureau member Ghazi Hamad, and in May 2024, a livestream interview with Hamas Spokesman Osama Hamdan.[4] Also in May, 2024, Samidoun played a specially recorded message from Basem Naim addressing a "Resistance Festival" in Brussels. The Samidoun article concluded its description of the event by saying the seminar is part of its "series of international initiatives" aimed at "reinforcing the connection between the Palestinian struggle and revolutionary movements in the region and around the world." President Barzani noted 'the importance of intensifying efforts to advance the peace process and praised today's step of PKK disarmament,' according to a statement from his office. Among the DEM Party delegation were party spokesperson Aysegul Dogan, co-chair Tuncer Bakirhan, veteran Kurdish politician Ahmet Turk, and former lawmaker Leyla Zana. The DEM Party delegation expressed gratitude for President Barzani's support and his role in facilitating the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish state, the party said on X. A group of 30 PKK fighters symbolically burned their weapons in a ceremony in Sulaimani on Friday. The armed group has declared its intention to lay down weapons and pursue a political path in its struggle for Kurdish rights in Turkey. Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, said the Kurdistan Region's role in hosting the ceremony was met with broad approval from all parties involved, including the Turkish state. The Kurdistan Region has been the site of the majority of clashes between the PKK and Turkish forces for the past several years. 'Unfortunately, in the armed conflict that has existed on the ground the first victim in it has been the Kurdistan Region. We have dozens or I can say hundreds and more of our villages that have suffered damage and harm. We have given human losses. Damage to the environment and economy has befallen the people. And these are the direct impacts,' he told Rudaw. Turkish military operations, mainly in Duhok province, continued ahead of the disarmament ceremony, according to the US-based Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Founded in 1978, the PKK initially advocated for Kurdish independence, but later shifted its focus to securing political and cultural rights for Kurds in Turkey.
