Terengganu deny in talks to release winger Akhyar

The Star05-06-2025
KUALA NERUS: Terengganu have denied allegations that the club are currently in negotiations with Brunei for the transfer of their agile winger Akhyar Rashid.
Their acting chief executive officer, Mohd Syahrizan Mohd Zain said that so far, no party had come forward with an official request, including the invited Super League team Brunei.
He said the Kedah-born player has a contract with the Turtles until 2027 and remains in the team's main plans for the upcoming Malaysian League (M-League) season.
'The player (Akhyar) is still contracted until 2027. We have not received any official letter, let alone engaged in negotiations with Brunei regarding the player's transfer,' said Syahrizan.
'We consider the matter to be mere rumours and speculation on social media. Our focus is on building the team for the new season.'
However, Syahrizan said that if any party was interested in acquiring their player, they must go through the correct channels and procedures as stipulated by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Football League (MFL).
According to him, the Turtles will only consider any transfer offers if the player is not in the coaching staff's plans for the 2025-2026 season.
Akhyar, 26, joined Terengganu last season on a loan deal.
During that period, he successfully scored 10 goals in the M-League and Shopee Cup competitions. — Bernama

TSG rider claims Most Combative Rider award at Ordiziako Classic

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team's (TSG) Spanish Classics campaign continued on a positive note at the Ordiziako Classic in the Basque Country yesterday (July 25). Stefan de Bod's spirited efforts in the 167 kilometre race saw him rewarded with the Most Combative Rider award in the UCI 1.1 event which is part of the UCI European Tour. The South African joined an early breakaway and did his best to match some of the best riders in the world. But in the end, it was the big boys from UAE Team Emirates-XRG - the team of the great Tadej Pogacar - who swept the podium. Igor Arrieta claimed the win in three hours, 50 minutes and 23 seconds after pipping Giro d'Italia runner up Isaac del Toro to the line. Antonio Morgado (+16s) completed the podium. Mathias Bregnhoj was the highest placed TSG rider, crossing the line 34th (+1:18s) ahead of Vadim Pronskiy (44th, +2:18s), De Bod (59th, +4:45s) and Kee Zhe Yie (91st, +14:34s). Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff did not finish while Anatolii Budiak did not start due to a fever. De Bod, who is in his first season with TSG, was pleased with his performance. "It was a good day, we tried something a little bit different and took a chance," said de Bod. "When racing against the big teams it is difficult to get the results you want, so you have to think proactively. "I decided to go in the break during the first climb when I saw the opportunity. "Unfortunately, it did not go closer to the line. But still, I did my best and showed (highlighted) the (TSG) jersey for the team and won a small prize for the Most Combative Rider." The race featured five category-three climbs which left riders with little room for respite. TSG, who competed at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic earlier this week, will next compete at the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3.

Veteran Fazly's back with Selangor – and their defence couldn't feel safer

True Selangor stalwart: Fazly's unwavering spirit and commitment became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. PETALING JAYA: In a move that has taken many by surprise, seasoned leftback Fazly Mazlan has rejoined Selangor – a decision that coach Katsuhito Kinoshi openly admits he did not see coming. But despite that, Kinoshi welcomes the move with open arms. 'Yes, I was very surprised when I was informed that he wanted to come back,' said the Japanese tactician. 'But I like him. I really do.' Kinoshi revealed that it was Fazly's unwavering spirit and deep commitment that became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. Despite the defender being released from the squad at the end of the season, the coach emphasised that desire trumps all. Fazly had an offer to join Super League newcomers Immigration but Selangor said they needed cover in the fullback spots, and he did not think twice. 'If he truly wants to return, that's what matters most,' Kinoshi said. 'For me, when a player has that kind of hunger, I will always welcome him. I really value that attitude.' But this is not merely about filling a spot on the roster. Kinoshi believes that Fazly, now 31, represents more than just experience - he's a blueprint for longevity and resilience in Malaysian football. 'He can be a role model for younger players. If you play with all your heart, sacrifice for the team, and give 100 percent in every match, you can continue playing well into your 30s - 32, 35 even,' the coach added. Beyond his on-field capabilities, Fazly's return brings much-needed guidance to a transitioning squad. As Selangor look to the future with a new generation of talent, veterans like Fazly serve as the bridge between experience and potential. 'Having senior players like Fazly is not just about technical aspects and experience. It's also about mentoring the younger generation who will one day lead this team,' Kinoshi explained. The timing of his return couldn't be more critical as the Red Giants are preparing for their Charity Shield game against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Aug 8. 'We have a very important match coming up. The presence of experienced players like Fazly is a huge asset for games like this,' Kinoshi said. Fazly's story comes full circle, having once been a key pillar in the Selangor line-up before his release. Now, with shifts in the club's structure and renewed ambitions, he's back to reclaim his place - not just in the team but in the hearts of Selangor fans.

FAM denies neglecting youth teams

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) has denied neglecting youth development following the country's dismal performance at the recent Under-23 Asean Championship. FAM president Datuk Joehari Ayub stressed that under his leadership, equal emphasis is placed on every level of the national setup, from the senior team down to the Under-17s. And he is already laying the groundwork for deeper international affiliations and youth integration in the Super League. "There might be a misunderstanding," he said, addressing recent criticism that the national youth teams were neglected following Malaysia's group-stage exit in the Under-23 Asean Championship in Jakarta. "I can assure you, as president, that every level of the national teams, from senior to youth, is being cared for equally. "There's no bias toward any age group," he said. Joehari revealed that his recent trip to Melbourne was not merely observational, but involved high-level discussions with the Australian Football Federation about forming a long-term affiliation that could allow young Malaysian players to train and develop in the Australian system. "I also had discussions with the federation and their president about building an affiliation or attachment, where our players can go," he said. However Joehari admitted that funding remains a challenge in turning these ideas into reality, but hinted at one possible solution, introducing youth quotas in the Super League. "We're looking to find ways to give our young players more opportunities, especially in the Super League and the AFL," he said. "Maybe we can introduce quotas for young players in the Super League if teams agree. That's one of the approaches we'll discuss with the league organisers."
