JAKARTA: (Bernama) Asean, under Malaysia's current chairmanship, is establishing the Asean AI Safety Network (AI Safe) to promote ethical innovation, institutionalise safety protocols, and strengthen regional cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI).
Asean secretary-general Datuk Dr Kao Kim Hourn said the initiative reflects the region's commitment to embedding trust, transparency, and accountability in AI development.
Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday (July 27), Kao said Asean is ready to work closely with China through the Asean-China 2025 Digital Work Plan to build a resilient and equitable AI partnership.
He cautioned that while AI brings efficiency, it also poses serious risks, as autonomous AI agents and generative technologies lack ethical reasoning and are prone to bias, manipulation, and unintended harm.
"Generative AI heightens threats such as misinformation, deepfakes, and cybersecurity breaches,' Kao said in remarks released by the Asean Secretariat.
He said without proper governance, these developments could deepen inequality and erode privacy. He called for urgent international co-operation to ensure AI serves human welfare.
Kao also welcomed the launch of the China-Asean AI Centre, aimed at supporting responsible AI deployment in the region, while noting the China-Asean Digital Academy as a key effort to bridge digital skills gaps by offering training and tools to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and underserved communities.
He called on governments, industry, and academia to collaborate in shaping a future where AI is inclusive, ethical, and sustainable.
"Our path forward is clear: unlock new co-operation, drive engines of growth, and create opportunities across Asean, China, and beyond,' Kao added. - Bernama

China showcases humanoid robots at Shanghai AI conference

SHANGHAI: Serving craft beer, playing mahjong, and even boxing—humanoid robots took center stage at the World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai this weekend, showcasing China's rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. The event, attended by over 800 companies, featured more than 3,000 products, with humanoid robots stealing the spotlight through their quirky yet impressive demonstrations. Premier Li Qiang opened the conference by announcing China's plans to establish a new AI governance body, emphasizing the need to balance innovation with risk management. However, the expo itself buzzed with excitement rather than concern. 'Demand is currently very strong, whether in terms of data, scenarios, model training, or artificial construction. The overall atmosphere in all these areas is very lively,' said Yang Yifan, R&D director at Shanghai-based AI firm Transwarp. This year's WAIC follows a major milestone for Chinese AI—startup DeepSeek's January unveiling of an AI model rivalling top US systems at a fraction of the cost. Among the exhibits, robots drummed to Queen's 'We Will Rock You,' played curling, and served drinks, though some movements remained slightly unrefined. Still, the progress from previous years was evident. China has heavily invested in robotics, with some experts suggesting it may already hold an edge over the US. Unitree, a Hangzhou-based firm, showcased its G1 android, which performed fluid boxing moves, and announced the upcoming launch of a full-sized humanoid robot priced under $6,000. Beyond hardware, AI companions—ranging from digital businessmen to warriors—interacted with visitors via screens. Baidu introduced its latest 'digital humans,' AI agents capable of decision-making and collaboration. The company reported that these avatars outperformed human streamers in e-commerce sales during a recent live broadcast. Baidu also revealed it secured approval for fully driverless robotaxis in Shanghai's Pudong district, marking another step in AI integration. Despite concerns about job displacement, Baidu's Wu Chenxia stressed AI's role in enhancing efficiency rather than replacing humans. Visitors remained captivated by the technology on display. 'When it comes to China's AI development, we have a comparatively good foundation of data and also a wealth of application scenarios,' said Yang. 'There are many more opportunities for experimentation.' - AFP

Bangladesh seeks Malaysia's backing for Asean membership during meeting with Nurul Izzah

NEW DELHI, July 28 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean). 'We want to become a part of Asean, and we will need your support,' he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an Asean sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. 'Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies,' he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution. She also offered her condolences during the meeting with Yunus and at the conference over the loss of lives in the recent fighter jet crash at Milestone School in Dhaka. — Bernama

Ringgit Strengthens Broadly On Cautious Trade Sentiment

WORLD By Rosemarie Khoo Mohd Sani KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar in early trade on Monday amid cautious sentiment, as traders awaited clarity on a possible extension of the trade truce between the United States (US) and China, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2110/2310 versus the greenback, compared with Friday's close of 4.2195/2245. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that earlier, the US and the European Union (EU) had agreed to a 15 per cent tariff on most EU imports, while most US imports would face zero tariff under the deal. He said markets are also closely watching the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for July 29 and 30, with consensus expecting no change to the Federal Funds Rate, currently at 4.25 per cent to 4.50 per cent. "Based on recent developments, most countries appear accommodative in offering favourable terms to the US. It remains to be seen whether this will effectively narrow the trade balance in the near term. 'However, the cost of doing business in the US is likely to rise, and it also appears the US may be relying on a weaker dollar to boost export competitiveness. 'Against this backdrop, we expect the ringgit to remain within a narrow range of RM4.22 to RM4.23 versus the US dollar,' Mohd Afzanizam told Bernama. At opening here, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
