What Is ‘Umamusume: Pretty Derby'? Viral Horse Girl Gacha, Explained

Umamusume: Pretty Derby Cygames Inc
Just a few days after release, Umamusume: Pretty Derby is going viral— inspiring livestreams, memes and TikTok edits—the bizarre anime girl racing game is proving immensely popular online.
First released in 2021 as a mobile game for iOS and Android, Umamusume is a racing simulator and a gacha game, featuring anime 'Horse Girls' with horse ears and tails, sprinting around a racing track.
Umamusume 's Horse Girls aren't the equine enthusiasts of our world, but animal-human hybrids. Sort of.
In the world of Umamusume , Horse Girls are reincarnated racehorses from Earth, birthed in human form, but gifted with superhuman speed and stamina. For whatever reason, all are female—even famous stallions are reborn as cute anime girls.
For those interested in delving deeper into the lore, the game also has a multiple-season anime adaptation that, from the clips posted online, actually looks fairly thrilling.
One user review on Steam succinctly summarized the strange world of Umamusume , writing: 'The most terrifying thing about the Umamusume universe is that real horses don't actually exist.'
After launching on Steam on June 24, Umamusume suddenly exploded in popularity, introducing gamers to the ins and outs of horse racing—cute anime girls, it seems, are the key to success, in any field.
At the time of writing, Umamusume: Pretty Derby has more than 5,600 user reviews on Steam, with an 'overwhelmingly positive' score of 95%.
Following livestreams on YouTube and Twitch from popular streamers Ludwig and Northernlion, Umamusume shot up to 28,784 players on Steam.
Gamers are finding the thrill of racing highly addictive, and are posting memes and adrenaline-infused TikTok edits to convey the emotional highs and lows of watching their favorite Horse Girls sprint to the finish.
Notably, the game is a management simulator, and players do not actually control their Horse Girls, only train them. For many players, this makes the game all the more addictive, essentially placing the player on the sidelines, as just another spectator.
Many commentators have criticized Umamusume for being another gacha game, adding to the microtransaction-addled landscape of modern gaming. What Is A Gacha Game?
Gacha games are free-to-play games that make money through microtransactions, drawing players in with engaging gameplay, but ensuring that most players will eventually want to spend virtual currency to acquire new characters or items.
In gacha games, paid items and characters are distributed randomly, like loot boxes, and have been compared to gambling, as the random rewards can fuel addictive behavior and spending.
Obviously, horse racing is already known as a gambler's pursuit, but Umamusume's merging of horse racing, gacha gaming, and adorable anime girls seems to have created an addictive supernova.
Gamers with poor impulse control might want to skip this one, but fans seem to have happily embraced the bizarre blend. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds mirrors Mario Kart World's move away from traditional 3-lap races with tracks that put you in a whole "different universe"

Mario Kart World is courting controversy with a new update that makes it even harder to play traditional three-lap races, but Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has been planning to make a very similar change since the beginning. Speaking to GamesRadar+, veteran Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka said that early in the development process on Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Sega was trying to come up with a fresh new idea for the new iteration. In that brainstorming session, he says, "we had this idea that we've had this three-lap course up until now - it's always once, twice, three times around. What if that's the thing that we change?" That idea brought the CrossWorlds team to the concept of its 'travel rings'. These portals allow the racer in first place to select which world the second lap will take place in, before the racers all return to the original track for the final lap. The aim, Iizuka says, is that "instead of racing the same lap around the same course, you're going to a different world, a different universe, a whole different racecourse." It's an interesting way to change things up, and it's also felt across CrossWorlds' approach to its Grand Prix format. The travel ring means that "we can warp around to different places, we don't need to stay on the same course," so the final race in each Grand Prix will be an amalgamation of the previous races. It's an interesting new spin on the traditional one-two-three that kart racers have largely relied on for years. It's also part of why Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds can get around introducing characters like Hatsune Miku, and courses based on Minecraft. It might, however, prove to be more controversial than Sega expects - Mario Kart World has just pushed an update that means you're no longer guaranteed to get a regular three-lap race and it seems to be going down quite badly. Granted, that seems to be because Mario Kart is moving firmly away from the traditional three-lap formula, which CrossWorlds isn't doing - you'll just run a different second lap, rather than a whole new race. Still, it makes for a more interesting run-up to launch, especially as Sonic's biggest competition stumbles during its headstart. Veteran Sonic producer says Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds team completely removed items from the game if they were too "stressful" or let players "win all the time"

CD Projekt Red Announces ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2' at Anime Expo

CD Projekt Red is returning to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners universe with a new stand-alone entry, which the game developer announced alongside the anime series' showrunner during a panel at Anime Expo on Friday. The video game developer will once again partner with the animation studio Trigger for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which, like its predecessor, will stream on Netflix. An official logo and poster art were shared as part of CD PROJEKT RED's 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators,' with a promise that later in the day, Trigger would tease new footage for the series at the Peacock Theater as part of its own panel. Described as a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge, Edgerunners 2 will, according to the series' story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, not only be a sadder and darker take, but 'more bloody, and more raw.' 'Night City has a lot of stories to tell. I have a dream that it won't end with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. There's more stories, more characters,' he added about his decision to pursue another series. 'I wasn't satisfied with the sadness I received from the audience so I want you to be even more sad now.' Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will feature a new story and fresh characters, and while the series does not currently have a release date, it will be directed by Kai Ikarashi. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi made a special appearance during the panel to pass the baton for Ikarashi's directorial debut on the series, after working together on the 2022 entry. Voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez) also appeared on the panel, which saw cast and creatives take fans behind the scenes of the 2022 anime. Sztybor and Ikarashi will be joined on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 by lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and Masahiko Otsuka, who will be responsible for the screenplay adaptation. '[Cyberpunk: Edgerunner's] David [Martinez's] story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio Trigger along for the ride makes us at CD Projekt Red so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before,' Sztybor said in a statement. Japanese airlines cancel flights after manga predicts disaster

(NewsNation) — Airlines in Japan are cancelling flights after a drop in sales linked to a manga from the 1990s that predicted a disaster. Artist and author Ryo Tatsuki published 'Watashi ga Mita Mirai,' which translates to 'The Future I Saw,' in 1999. She calls the book a dream journal and says it's based on her recorded dreams. According to some, Tatsuki has been accurate in the past. Calming 'cortisol cocktail' recipes flood the Internet Tatsuki's first dream was in 1991, when she saw a man with a brilliant personality and striking looks who died, months before Freddie Mercury passed away. Some, however, have called that dream a coincidence rather than a prediction. Another dream, recorded in 1995, included a violent earthquake hitting Kobe, Japan, Tatsuki's hometown. On Jan. 17, 1995, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the area, killing 6,000 and leaving 45,000 homeless. In another entry from 1991, Tatsuki wrote of a 'huge catastrophe' to take place in March 2011. That prediction appeared to foreshadow a 9.1 magnitude earthquake that would be known as the 'Great East Japan Earthquake.' The book, which had a 2021 reprint, referenced a real catastrophe coming on July 5, 2025. Tatsuki has said she is unsure if the date connects to an earthquake, but she reportedly saw the sea boiling south of Japan in a dream. Her interpretation of the dream was a volcanic eruption triggering destruction. Some airlines have reduced flights around the date due to decreased demand, while others, including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, say they haven't seen a change in bookings. Feng shui master Qi Xian Yu predicted a year of disasters in 2025, including aviation disasters, complete with a warning to avoid countries including Japan and South Korea. Experts have said there is no way to predict major earthquakes and Japanese authorities have urged people to keep visiting. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
