Hong Kong cyclists ‘go back to school', then beat China for Asian relay medal

Herve Dagorne said Hong Kong's cyclists had benefited from 'going back to school' over their winter Australian camp, after they claimed team time trial mixed relay bronze at the Asian Road Championships in Thailand.
Vincent Lau Wan-yau, Mow Ching-yin, Ng Pak-hang, Ceci Lee Sze-wing, Chloe Leung Wing-yee and Yang Qianyu combined to comfortably beat China to a place on the podium.
Kazakhstan and Japan finished 19 and five seconds ahead of Hong Kong, respectively, and head coach Dagorne said he 'felt we could get gold', as the female trio of Lee, Leung and Yang chased down their rivals towards the end.
After going to the 10-day championships in Phitsanulok with a two-medal target, Hong Kong are well set, with Dagorne expecting both Lau and Leung to fight for individual time trial honours.
The city squad spent six weeks training and racing in Australia, before returning to Hong Kong on January 28. Riders and staff had only one day off, before resuming training, then flying to Thailand on February 3. The Hong Kong team toast their success at the Asian Road Championships in Thailand. 'I haven't heard anyone say they were tired or looking forward to coming back,' Dagorne said. 'Everything in Adelaide [where they spent five weeks] was perfect. We were welcome in all the races and the level was high. It showed our team a real cycling culture.'

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead Kaden Groves celebrates winning stage 20 of the Tour de France. Photo: Reuters Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns. Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris. The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier. This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins. "They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out. "I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow." Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps. So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test British and Irish Lions' Sione Tuipulotu celebrates scoring a try for the tourists. Photo: Reuters A relentless British and Irish Lions were ferocious in attack and solid in defence to edge a dogged Australia and win a bruising first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday. The tourists repeatedly laid siege to the Wallabies' line for a 17-5 lead at the break before soaking up second-half pressure to bank the win with both sides scoring three tries. A late Australia try meant the scoreline flattered a poor Wallabies side, with the Lions never looking in trouble after opening up a 24-5 lead shortly after half-time. Played in front of 52,229 fans at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium, many wearing the Red of the Lions, the tourists proved too strong for a brave, but outgunned Australian outfit. With Scottish fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings in the backs and outstanding loose forwards Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne dominating up front, the Lions showed why they went into the Test as firm favourites. But despite being behind for all of the match, the Wallabies didn't roll over, and fears of a huge defeat never materialised. The Lions now head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for next Saturday's second Test 1-0 up in the three-match series. (AFP)

Title races go down to the wire as Derek Leung looks to strike a Tony Cruz Award blow

Derek Leung still has a chance to win the Tony Cruz Award. Photos: Kenneth Chan It is now or never for Derek Leung Ka-chun as he looks to Beauty Joy to be the catalyst to spark his fading Tony Cruz Award hopes back to life at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 36-year-old is in a three-way shoot-out for the local riders' premiership, with Matthew Poon Ming-fai leading the way on 36 and Matthew Chadwick sitting second on 34. Leung has two meetings to claw back three winners to draw level with Poon, with his Sunday book of eight rides looking the strongest of the trio. He rides Beauty Joy in the feature Class One Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy (1,600m), with the Tony Cruz-trained eight-year-old looking to back up a last-start win in the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m). Leung also rides Rainbow Seven, who has finished in the top three in all of his racecourse starts, in the Class Four Victory Marvel Handicap (1,200m), and Smart Fat Cat, who has surged home in both his starts so far and is a leading chance in the Class Four Medic Kingdom Handicap (1,400m). Of his rivals, Poon's best chance comes in the form of debut winner Voyage Boss, who had excuses last start and is a big shout in the Class Four Medic Kingdom Handicap (1,400m), while Chadwick will be hoping a rejuvenated Devas Twelve can provide him with a winner in the Class Four Pingwu Spark Handicap (1,400m). Heading into Sha Tin, John Size holds a likely insurmountable six-win lead over David Hayes in the trainers' premiership race, with both holding leading chances in many of Sunday's races. Size has a trio in the feature Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy thanks to Beauty Eternal, Bundle Award and Young Champion, though Mickley – who was second in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) – looks to be his best chance on the card down in grade for the Class Three Sight Winner Handicap (1,600m). Awesome Treasure, armed with Britney Wong Po-ni's 10lb claim, looks to be Hayes' best chance in the Class Four Big Profit Handicap (1,200m) from a good draw in stall five.
