Two killed in Russian attacks on Ukraine before possible talks in Turkiye
Russian troops launched an estimated 109 drones and five missiles across Ukraine on Friday and overnight, the Ukrainian air force said on Saturday, adding that three of the missiles and 42 drones were destroyed and another 30 drones failed to reach their targets without causing damage.
The attacks came amid uncertainty over whether Kyiv will take part in a new round of peace talks early next week in Istanbul.
In the Russian attacks on Saturday, a child was killed in a strike on the front-line village of Dolynka in the Zaporizhia region, and another was injured, Zaporizhia's Governor Ivan Fedorov said.
'One house was destroyed. The shockwave from the blast also damaged several other houses, cars, and outbuildings,' Fedorov wrote on Telegram.
A man was also killed by Russian shelling in Ukraine's Kherson region, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on Telegram.
Moscow did not comment on either attack.
Meanwhile, authorities in Ukraine's Sumy region said they were evacuating 11 villages within a roughly 30-kilometre (19-mile) range from the Russian border.
'The decision was made in view of the constant threat to civilian life as a result of shelling of border communities,' the regional administration said on social media.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said some 50,000 Russian troops have amassed in the area with the intention of launching an offensive to carve out a buffer zone inside Ukrainian territory.
Ukraine's top army chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, said on Saturday that Russian forces were focusing their main offensive efforts on Pokrovsk, Torets and Lyman in the Donetsk region, as well as the Sumy border area.
Syrskii added that Ukrainian forces are still holding territory in Russia's Kursk region – a statement Moscow has repeatedly denied.
The evacuations and attacks came just two days before a possible meeting between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul, as Washington called on both countries to end the three-year war.
Russia has confirmed it will send a delegation, but Kyiv has not yet accepted the proposal, warning the talks would not yield results unless the Kremlin provided its peace terms in advance.
Zelenskyy said Saturday it was still not clear what Moscow was planning to achieve at the meeting and that so far, it did not 'look very serious'.

Ukraine seeks €5bn more for weapons amid new push for peace negotiations
DPA Kiev Kiev said on Monday that it requires the equivalent of over €5 billion ($5.84 billion) in additional military aid this year to boost its production of weapons, as Moscow responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's proposal for new peace talks. The funds are necessary to manufacture more remote-controlled drones, interceptor drones and long-range weapons, Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal said during an online meeting in the so-called Ramstein format. According to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, he asked partner countries to already provide funds for 2026. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi also called for an increase in military aid. 'We are still urgently lacking air-defence systems and associated missiles, long-range weapons, artillery shells, armoured technology, evacuation equipment, electronic warfare systems, radars, drone systems and more,' the general said, adding that only with joint efforts could Russian aggression be stopped. The 29th meeting was attended by 50 partner countries of Ukraine, led by Germany and the United Kingdom. Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for more than three years with massive Western support. Moscow confirms interest in negotiations with Kiev The Kremlin confirmed on Monday its interest in a third round of negotiations proposed by Zelensky to end the war. At the previous meeting, both sides exchanged their position papers, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. According to Russian news agencies, he said that an exchange of views and negotiations are now pending, but so far they are completely opposing. He added that 'great diplomatic work' is still needed. On Saturday, Zelensky proposed a meeting to take place later this week. According to Peskov, there is no finalized date yet. He stated that there are no changes on the Russian side regarding the composition of the delegation. In the previous two rounds of talks in Istanbul, Russia's chief negotiator was presidential adviser and former culture minister Vladimir Medinsky. In May, Kiev and Moscow held bilateral negotiations for the first time in three years. At this meeting and a later one in June in Istanbul, both sides agreed on a large prisoner exchange and the return of fallen soldiers. However, steps towards ending the war against Ukraine, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022, were not discussed. Fresh wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine At least one person was killed and eight others injured as Russia launched a wave of drone attacks on Kiev overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Monday morning on the platform X about a total of two dead and 15 injured following the attacks across the country as a whole. The attacks hit the capital and its surroundings, as well as Kharkiv in the north-east and Ivano-Frankivsk in the west of the country, near the Polish border. Referring to Ivano-Frankivsk, Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv described it as the largest attack since the beginning of the war. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia attacked its neighbouring country overnight with 426 drones and drone decoys. Additionally, Moscow reportedly used five Kinzhal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles and 19 cruise missiles of various types. The air force stated that 403 drones and decoys were shot down or brought down by targeted jamming. The majority of the missiles and cruise missiles were also neutralized, they wrote, but did not specify an exact number. Air and rail traffic in Russia restricted due to drones The Ministry of Defence in Moscow said on Monday that 74 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian territory overnight. Of these, 15 were reportedly approaching the capital. The drone attacks once again affected air traffic. According to the aviation authority Rosaviatsiya, the four Moscow airports and the one in Nizhny Novgorod were closed for take-offs and landings for several hours. In the Rostov region, the drone attacks also led to restrictions in train traffic. Drone debris caused a fire at the station in the town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, the North Caucasus Railway Company reported. More than 50 trains were delayed as a result.

Italy cancels concert by Putin ally Gergiev
Italy's Royal Palace of Caserta has announced it cancelled a concert by Russian maestro Valery Gergiev, a vocal backer of President Vladimir Putin, after an uproar from politicians and Kremlin critics. The concert scheduled for Sunday in the 18th-century palace near Naples caused a heated debate in Italy, was slammed by Ukraine and led to calls for protests by Russia's exiled opposition. Gergiev has not condemned Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a stance for which he was fired from the Munich Philharmonic in March 2022. He has since been shunned by the West and has not played concerts in Europe. Days of uncertainty over the concert ended with the abrupt announcement on Monday. 'The directorate of the Royal Palace of Caserta has ordered the cancellation of the symphony concert conducted by Valery Gergiev, scheduled as part of the Un'Estate da Re festival for July 27,' said a Caserta palace statement. It gave no official reason for the decision. Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, lauded the announcement as 'good news'. 'No artist who supports the current dictatorship in Russia should be welcomed in Europe,' Navalnaya wrote on X. Navalnaya's team had campaigned against the concert and said in a statement: 'Putin's pals should not be touring Europe like nothing happened.' Russia's state TASS news agency said the 72-year-old maestro was not informed of the decision, quoting Gergiev as saying: 'I do not have this information.' 'Scandalous situation' Gergiev is the director of Russia's Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, and before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, he regularly played in leading Western theatres. While Kremlin critics lauded the cancellation, Moscow's ambassador to Italy called it a 'scandalous situation' that was part of Western politicians' 'policy of 'cancelling' Russian culture'. In a statement on the embassy's Facebook page, Alexei Paramonov said it was 'sad' to watch Italy 'subordinate its cultural policy to the demands of Ukrainians and other immigrants'. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli – who had warned that the concert risked turning into a propaganda event – said the cancellation was 'common sense' and aimed at 'protecting the values of the free world'. Ukraine on Sunday urged organisers to drop the performance, calling Gergiev 'Putin's mouthpiece' who should not be welcomed anywhere 'as long as Russian forces continue to commit atrocities' in Ukraine. Recognised as one of the world's leading orchestra leaders, Gergiev is known for conducting epic symphonies of Russian classical music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, among other successes in Western opera houses. The conductor has stayed silent on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and mostly out of the public eye since 2022, but has played concerts in Asia.
