130 scholarship recipients all set for Taiwan experience

The Sun28-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: A record 130 Malaysian students are set to head to Taiwan, thanks to the 2025 MOE Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) – the highest number awarded to date.
For 24-year-old Eizyan Syazana Hairuzaman, missing out on a Taiwan internship during her undergraduate days turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
A year later, she is now bound for National Taiwan University under the prestigious
MOE Taiwan Scholarship, where she will pursue a Master's in Food Science and Technology.
'I was crushed when I had to let go of the internship, but I kept trying. Now, I'm grateful for this two-year opportunity,' she said, adding that she's eager to pick up Mandarin, dive into research and soak up Taiwanese culture.
Eizyan is sorting out her medical check-up and visa, with plans to fly off by end of August. Classes begin on Sept 1.
As a Muslim student, she initially had reservations but was reassured by Taiwan's growing Muslim-friendly initiatives.
'I've read about Salam Taiwan and their support for Muslim students,' she said.
Also Taiwan-bound is Ong Lip Qin, 39, who will pursue a PhD in Physical Therapy in Healthcare at National Cheng Kung University – his first fully funded overseas scholarship.
'I'm honoured to be chosen. Taiwan feels familiar and warm. It's a great place to study,' he said.
Ong leaves next week and will finalise accommodation once he arrives. As a Malaysian Chinese, he's not too worried about the language barrier but admits the four-year journey ahead will require mental grit.
'I've heard Taiwan is stunning - mountains, beaches, culture - I'm ready to explore all of it,' he added.
Ong plans to return in his third year to continue research at Malaysian clinics or hospitals.
At the award ceremony, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office representative Phoebe Yeh said Taiwan has been awarding these scholarships since 2004 to support top Malaysian talent and promote Mandarin learning.
'Over the past 20 years, hundreds of Malaysians have graduated from Taiwan's universities and language centres, excelling in their fields and strengthening bilateral ties,' she said.
Yeh also highlighted Taiwan's rising global profile, noting its 6th-place ranking among 69 economies in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Rankings.
She pointed to Taiwan's rich cultural heritage, Mandarin-speaking environment and expanding English-taught programmes as key reasons it's become a top study destination.
'With more Muslim-friendly services and diverse academic offerings, Taiwan is increasingly appealing to international students,' she said.
This year, 130 scholarships were awarded – 37 under the MOE Taiwan Scholarship (including five PhD, 25 Master's and seven undergraduate students), 88 under the HES and five under the Taiwan ICDF (International Cooperation and Development Fund) Scholarship for Master's programmes.
The Taiwan MOE scholarship recipients will receive tuition waivers worth RM5,800 per semester, along with monthly living allowances of between RM2,200 and RM2,900. HES scholars will get RM3,900 monthly.
'These scholarships don't just open academic doors. They also strengthen Malaysia-Taiwan relationship,' Yeh said.

Malaysia launches exporter outreach, reforms post-US tariff deal

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will implement three major initiatives—exporter outreach, regulatory reforms, and nationwide supply chain mapping—following its recent tariff agreement with the US. The deal reduces tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25% to 19%, effective August 1. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated the agreement resulted from 'months of intense but thorough as well as methodical negotiations' without compromising Malaysia's 'red lines' in strategic sectors. 'Most importantly, we achieved this without conceding on our red lines in key areas,' he said during his keynote at The Edge Malaysia Centurion Club Awards 2025. Protected areas include foreign equity limits in strategic industries, digital legal safeguards, and halal standards. 'The negotiation package was a full-of-nation offer, not just the government, but all (of you)—many companies contributed to that,' he added. Post-deal, the government's focus includes: 1. **Exporter Outreach:** Engaging SMEs and multinationals to mitigate tariff impacts. 2. **Regulatory Reform:** Cutting bureaucratic overlaps and outdated rules. 3. **Supply Chain Mapping:** Strengthening industrial roles in global supply chains. Tengku Zafrul highlighted Malaysia's mid-cap companies (RM100m–RM1b market cap) as vital to the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. 'As of March 31, there are 519 such Centurions, critical to our national economic aspirations,' he noted. - Bernama

Financial service providers increasingly adopting AI: Bank Negara survey

KUALA LUMPUR: Financial service providers in Malaysia are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI), according to the central bank's AI Survey 2024. The survey found that in 2024, 71% of banking institutions and development financial institutions, and 77% of insurance and takaful operators had implemented at least one AI application. 'Notably, in 2024, 71% of banking institutions and DFIs had implemented at least one AI application, an increase from 56% in the previous year. Similarly, 77% of ITOs had adopted at least one AI application, compared to 58% in the previous year,' according to Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) discussion paper on 'Artificial Intelligence in the Malaysian Financial Sector' today. BNM said over 60% of banking institutions and insurers view AI as a strategic priority over the next one to three years. 'This trend looks set to continue in the coming years, as over half of the respondens agreed that AI has the potential to generate significant new value for both their organisations and consumers.' The central bank stressed it remains vigilant to developments in AI and closely monitors its usage across financial service providers. 'As AI technologies and the state of adoption in financial service providers continue to grow and evolve, we recognise that AI use may introduce new risks that are not adequately addressed by the existing regulatory framework.' BNM said an escalation in supervisory focus may be considered if AI-related risks become more material, in line with the principles of parity, proportionality, and neutrality. 'For example, due to widespread use of AI applications in critical functions or to replace human decision making. Where relevant, we may explore the need to introduce new regulatory expectations should the need arise in the future,' it said. The central bank said it closely monitors five technological developments and innovation in the financial sector to shape its future regulatory and supervisory approach on AI. The discussion paper seeks to share and obtain feedback on BNM's posture on responsible AI innovation in the financial sector; the proposed regulatory approach for AI, as well as industry guidelines on responsible use; and general development approach including priority areas for greater innovation and industry-led collaboration. BNM said it aims to facilitate and encourage responsible adoption and use of AI across the financial sector in a manner that will advance better consumer outcomes and its broader policy objectives. 'This means that while new innovations, such as AI, are given the opportunity to flourish, associated risks that may negatively impact system-wide stability, consumer outcomes, and confidence in the financial sector will need to be managed effectively.' BNM interviewed select local financial industry players throughout 2024 and issued an updated industry-wide survey to gain insights into recent advancements on AI within the Malaysian financial sector. The AI Survey 2024 received responses from 1,207 financial service providers.

Ginormous RM1t bill for small tariff cut

COMMENT | And so the cost of that reduction in tariff to 19 percent from 25 for Malaysian goods to the US is revealed as over US$240 billion - more than RM1 trillion - that's paying way too much for very little, leaving us gaping at the gigantic sacrifice made. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz enumerated the concessions: US$150 billion in purchases by multinational companies in Malaysia's semiconductor, aerospace, and data centre sectors over five years;
