
Health dept proposes to increase MBBS seats at GMC from 200 to 250
The directorate of health services has proposed to increase the number of MBBS seats at the GMC from the current 200 to 250, said health minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday.
He also said govt is working on a proposal to set up a nursing college at the South Goa District Hospital.
Rane said that the two initiatives, if implemented, will create new opportunities for Goan youth in the healthcare sector. He was speaking in the legislative assembly during the discussion for demand for grants for the healthcare sector, including the GMC.
The minister also said govt plans to constitute an expert committee headed by the chief minister comprising specialist doctors who can provide advice on policies for the healthcare sector, emergency medicine protocols and casualty management.
'We are suggesting a dedicated command centre for the 108 ambulance service. We have close to 100 ambulances. We want to create a dedicated fleet of ambulances for VIP movement,' the inister said.
Stating that cancer is growing at a 'galloping pace' in Goa, Rane said the state cancer institute's tie-up with the Tata Memorial Hospital will provide Goans with better treatment options at a much more affordable rates. Rane also said the plan is to operate the state cancer institute along the lines of a trust.

Mental health cases on upswing since '22
Porvorim:
Mental health cases reported at Goa's two main district hospitals — Asilo at Mapusa and Hospicio in Margao — have shown a consistent year-on-year increase since April 2022. Monthly footfall crossed 1,000 in several months, state govt informed the assembly on Thursday. People in the 19-59 age group and senior citizens (60 and above) constituted the majority of the patients, health minister Vishwajit Rane stated.
Minors (up to 18 years) accounted for a smaller but a steady share of the caseload. The number of women seeking mental health services surpassed that of men. The 19-59 group consistently made up over 60% of the cases each month. TNN

In 15 mnths, Rims reports 62 transplants & 87 donations
Ranchi: A total of 62 transplants were successfully conducted while 87 organ and tissue donations were recorded at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) between April 2024 and July 2025. State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) on Saturday generated awareness about the impact of organ and tissue donation on society. It honoured the families of deceased, who had pledged or donated eyes while stressing that one can illuminate another's life even in death. Urging the society to come forward in organ donation , Rims director Dr Raj Kumar said, "Why the hesitation to donate organs when someone is declared brain dead?We once faced similar resistance to blood donation. Thankfully, awareness changed that. The same shift in perception is needed for organ donation." Tributes were paid to late Sushant Singh, whose family had donated his organs. His father, Surendra Singh, through a video message, said, "I feel my son is still alive. People have received a new lease on life through his organs." Probe ordered into ragging allegations at Kurnool medical college
1 2 Tirupati: The management of Kurnool govt medical college has ordered an enquiry following allegations of ragging from some first year students. Medical college principal C Narasamma said she received an email complaint from first year MBBS students about third year students subjecting them to ragging when they refused to contribute donations for the upcoming Vinayaka Chaviti festival. After receiving the complaint, the principal summoned the men's hostel warden and issued a circular, warning students that the college management will take stern action if someone sought donations for Vinayaka festival. "We have also asked the anti-ragging committee to enquire into the allegations at the men's hostel," Narasamma said. Kurnool police also came to know about the ragging alllegations and inspected the men's hostel. Police, who also interacted with members of the anti-ragging committee, said they will wait for the outcome of the committee's report and act further. Meanwhile, state health minister Satya Kumar spoke to Kurnool medical college principal and enquired about the allegations. He directed the principal to submit a detailed report on the incident and asked to take tough action against those found indulging in ragging acts at the college/hostel premises.
