Mitch Marner begins a new chapter with the Vegas Golden Knights after his emotional departure from Toronto
After about a decade in the Maple Leafs jersey, Mitch Marner's career looks to take quite a dramatic turn as he prepares to skate for the Vegas Golden Knights. While the ride westward is undoubtedly a new and major chapter in his hockey career, it is also one that is very deeply personal to him.
The Toronto native, having always grown up dreaming of a Stanley Cup that would be coming home to his place, is now hoping to work through a franchise that, on the other hand, has been hugely successful recently and has emerged as a very strong culture.
Mitch Marner's playoff struggles reignite criticism despite regular-season impact
[FULL Q&A] NHL forward Mitch Marner on becoming a Golden Knight
Mitch Marner's 2025 playtime started with promise, but it soon deteriorated as the Toronto Maple Leafs failed to realize their championship dreams. Despite Marner putting up 13 points in the playoffs, he fell off the radar in Game 7 versus the Florida Panthers, as his side endured a gut-wrenching 6–1 loss, thus inviting all sorts of heavy criticism.
Marner was visibly frustrated, even yelling at some teammates on the bench, a sight that only brought home to the powers that be the extent of his anguish as well as the expectations heaped upon him as the hometown hero.
Assisting Auston Matthews for a Game 6 goal was a brief flurry of hope that could not revive Toronto's playoff run. Again, as the Leafs stumbled at this same round of the playoffs, Marner's moment in the postseason was overshadowed by an implosion from his teammates.
These playoff performances, coupled with pressure from fans and media alike, seemed to spur talk of a new chapter.
The blockbuster trade: Mitch Marner to Vegas Golden Knights
June 30, 2023: The Maple Leafs pulled off another high-level sign-and-trade. Mitch Marner signed an eight-year, $96 million extension with Toronto before being sent to Vegas in exchange for Nicolas Roy. For Marner, this was more than business, though-it was a welcome chance.
He would later figure out why Vegas was absolutely on the top of his list.
In Vegas, Marner said the emphasis lay on the winning atmosphere and culture of the team, and hence, in his eyes, there was much more to it than calling it an escape from Toronto's intense glare. There was a real opportunity to be a part of a roster that genuinely has a shot at lifting the Stanley Cup. He also added that, on a personal level, life in his new city suits his young family, so the decision was as much a family one as it was a business one.

Leon Marchand Wins Dominant 400m Medley World Title
France's Leon Marchand cruised to a dominant world 400m individual medley world title on Sunday to claim his second gold of the competition in Singapore. Marchand touched the wall in 4min 04.73sec, more than three seconds ahead of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita (4:08.32), with Russian Ilia Borodin (4:09.16) third. The French superstar put his rivals on notice by smashing the 200m IM world record and winning gold in the event earlier this week in Singapore. He started the 400m IM final in lane one after a below-par performance in the morning heats, which saw him qualify seventh fastest. But business was back to normal in the final as the 23-year-old took an early lead before moving further and further away from his rivals as the race progressed. Marchand broke Michael Phelps's 400m IM world record two years ago in Japan but his time in Singapore was more than two seconds outside his best mark.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upsets top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach Montreal quarterfinals
MONTREAL: Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. "Your support was incredible," Mboko told the crowd in French after a chorus of "Olé, Olé, Olé!" chants echoed around the venue. "I'm really happy to win today. .. It's incredible. I'm so happy to beat such a great champion." Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova. "She's playing high-level tennis." Gauff said. "I think that's what showed today. I think she was the better player." The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, finished off the 21-year-old Gauff — who had 24 unforced errors — in 1 hour, 2 minutes. "When I was up 5-4, the crowd started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy," Mboko said. "I used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more. I just used the crowd to my advantage as much as I could." Mboko will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain, a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Lin Zhu of China in a rain-interrupted match that ended just before midnight. In Rome in May, Gauff rallied to beat Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. "I was actually really thinking about it a lot during the match," Mboko said. "I had flashbacks to when I played her in Rome a little bit. I just remember when she came out playing even better and stepped it up a bit better. Wanted to step my game up a little bit more and make sure I matched whatever she was producing, and I wanted to stay right there with her." Earlier, 24th-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan set up a quarterfinal match. Kostyuk beat McCartney Kessler of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Rybakina topped Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
