Why Adult Tummy Time Is the Posture Trick You're Missing, According to Experts

Yahoo14-06-2025
Parents are already aware of the benefits of tummy time for their little ones. But tummy time can be good for adults too, according to wellness enthusiasts on TikTok. If you're not familiar, tummy time refers to the practice of placing an infant on their tummy for short periods while supervised, explains Jessica Lefkowitz, doctor of physical therapy (DPT), at Bespoke Treatments in NYC. 'This practice is essential for infants to develop postural strength necessary to be able to sit upright and support the head,' Lefkowitz says. This position helps strengthen neck and shoulder muscles that are important for good posture, she explains. 'Tummy time is a very important piece of a child's development and can be started immediately post birth by placing the infant on the mother's chest,' Lefkowitz says.
But could this practice also help adults? Or is it just another ill-advised TikTok fad? We asked experts for their take.
The practice is as simple as it sounds—you lie on your stomach with your elbows on the ground. Tummy time enthusiasts say it helps with posture and neck pain, especially if you work at a computer or spend a lot of time looking at your phone, which many of us do. When your head reaches forward, the center of gravity of your head also moves forward, putting stress on your neck in different directions, Lefkowitz explains.
Adult tummy time can help alleviate some of the discomfort caused by sitting this way for hours, says W. Zach Smith, DPT, and owner of HIDEF Physical Therapy in Seattle. 'I personally do a ton of time on my stomach when I am hanging out at home and playing with my kids to help with a disc injury and improve the extension of my back. There's a ton of benefits to lying on your stomach and getting extension, especially after a long day of sitting in a flexed posture,' Smith says. 'It helps reduce the flexion-based posture that most people in tech or desk jobs are in throughout the day. Tummy time encourages extension of the hips, lumbar spine, and thoracic spine, which is great to battle the posture you are in when sitting.'
It's best to start slowly. 'You will need to build up a tolerance to this over time,' Smith says. 'I usually do it while answering emails at night, watching TV, or reading a book.' He recommends trying it for 10 minutes a day and building up to what feels comfortable. (Some people do it for an hour or more, he says.) If that feels like too much, you can scale back.
As with most things, consistency is important. 'The more time spent in these positions helps build resilience over time and can help individuals to sit with better posture,' Lefkowitz says. 'As people spend more time in tummy time, it can help open up the tightness people may feel in their chest by stretching the pecs. When chest tightness decreases, it will help reduce the rounded shoulders or slouched position that many people experience.'
However, she cautions that people with certain conditions should avoid tummy time or consult with their doctors before trying it out. These include people with: back issues, such as spinal stenosis, advanced osteoporosis with risk of compression fractures, recent spinal surgery, spondylolisthesis, neck injuries, rotator cuff tears, women in the later stages of pregnancy, and people who have had abdominal surgery. And if you're not sure whether it's safe for you, then it's best to check with your physician.

IRS offers $2.895 million settlement with Maple Lawn over COVID-19 funding

COLDWATER, MI — County owned Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility received written confirmation Tuesday, July 22 of a settlement offer of $2.895 million from the IRS of an appeal of COVID-19 grants owed from the Employee Retention Credit program. Director Jayne Sabaitis told her board July 16 if confirmed, she would accept the offer after appealing denial of the original $3.6 million request filed three years ago during the pandemic. The money will help Maple Lawn make up for its current $1.3 million operating deficit caused by reduction in Medicaid funding for the current federal fiscal year. Prior story Maple Lawn to appeal IRS denial of $3.6 million in COVID-19 relief funds Sabaitis told her board she would consult with accountants Plante-Moran. 'We'll be discussing how that's going to affect our cost report. We want to make sure that we keep our expenses so that our Medicaid rate stays the same to make sure the use of the funds would not hurt next year's Medicaid funding," she said. Sabaitis told the board there are some capital projects which were delayed. 'We're not going to take this money and blow it. We want to hold cash as much as we can' with questions about future funding, she said. Related story With a current $1.2 million loss, Maple Lawn faces concerns with federal Medicaid cuts Sabaitis said five other Michigan nursing homes hired Washington legal counsel to sue the IRS over ERC denial. Maple Lawn was a late applicant for ERC funding only learning near the end of the pandemic the non-profit nursing facilities were eligible. The program was created for eligible businesses and tax-exempt organizations that had employees and saw increased costs or losses affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. I added Bulletproof coffee to the morning routine and loved it

I'm a coffee drinker. Period. It doesn't matter if it's in the waiting area at Jiffy Lube, in the parking lot at Dunkin', or at a vibey Indie mom-and-pop café that harvests their Arabica. If there's hot bean water, I'm having a cup (or three). Obviously, I'd rather my coffee not taste like it's been sitting in a pot for the better part of the day—slightly burnt and watered down. In a perfect world, or in a world with perfect coffee, it should jolt you from grogginess and at the same time, be bursting with flavor. I want my coffee strong and hot (I swear we're still talking about coffee). A dash of milk, too, please. Oh, and I also want my daily morning bev to be undeniably good for me. You can't always have everything when it comes to your morning drink. It's just coffee, after all. It's not a winning lottery ticket or a miracle drug, you know? Bulletproof coffee is seriously upping the bean water game and making me rethink so many hundreds (thousands!?) of subpar slurps. Bulletproof's founder, Dave Asprey, wanted to create a cup of coffee that offers more than a quick jolt of energy. After learning about the benefits of combining caffeine and fat while drinking butter tea in Tibet, he created a brand that would do just that. Bulletproof Coffee, which contains coffee, MCT oil, and grass-fed ghee (clarified butter), was born. Now, arguments have been made over the years (arguments I'll gladly cling to) that coffee, when consumed in moderation, is actually fairly healthy. It may be especially good for heart health. However, Bulletproof coffee attempts to take the 'coffee is healthy' argument to a whole new level. In addition to the Bulletproof butter recipe, the individual flavors have a variety of different ingredients that may offer mind and body benefits, like MCT oil, which is supposed to support focus and mental clarity, and feeling full for longer. Some Bulletproof Coffee flavors have additions like prebiotics, which research has shown can support gut health, along with slippery elm bark, B vitamins, and lion's mane, which has been shown to help with mood. In June the company launched a rebrand, where it introduced two different packaging options—one for its Enhanced line and one for its Artisan line. The Enhanced line is about energy, focus, and gut health and comes in white packaging. The Artisan line features coffee that's focused on taste and clean ingredients, and comes in black packaging. 'This rebrand is about more than just a new look, it's a reflection of where we're headed,' said Andy van Ark, CCO of Bulletproof in a statement. 'We've evolved alongside our consumers, and today's Bulletproof is focused on energizing and empowering consumers to own their day.' In the spirit of owning my day, I tried three different Bulletproof coffees: the Original, the High Achiever from the Enhanced line, and the Mentalist from the Artisan line. First up, was the Original, and it was love at first sip. The flavor is smooth, yet bold and robust. I knew I could spend every morning with this same brew and never get bored. It also seemed to provide steady energy, meaning I felt focused for longer than usual. Next, I sampled the High Achiever, which is especially formulated to help with both energy and focus. I wasn't expecting to notice a huge difference from the Original flavor. But wildly, I felt super focused through my entire work day, and beyond. While I'm usually a three-mugs-a-morning kinda gal, I found myself zipping through work, organizing my office, and only requiring one cup to do it. I mean, I still had two, but I didn't need two. Notably, I didn't hit an afternoon slog, which is pretty common for me after my morning caffeine wears off. Instead, I felt energized all day, which my dog especially appreciated because it meant she got an extra long walk. Last, but definitely not least, came the Mentalist. Like the others, I'd gladly drink this one every day, but in terms of flavor, it was the winner. It has the exact flavor I'm always looking for in a cup of coffee, with hints of cherry, almond, and caramel, and while, no, I didn't pick those all up myself, (I read them on the package), they came together perfectly. Like the original, I felt focused for longer than usual, too. A 12-ounce package of ground coffee runs about $16.99, a bit higher than budget brands, although subscribe and save options on the site can shave off a few dollars. Still, I do think it helped my focus and energy—especially the High Achiever—pretty undeniably. If you're looking for a cup of coffee that tastes really great and has even better body and brain-boosting benefits, I'd recommend not sleeping on Bulletproof. After just one cup, you'll be so full of energy, sleep will be the last thing on your brain anyway.
