India vs England 5th Test: Overcast sky, green pitch, moving ball - welcome to England, Day 1

TimesofIndia.com in London: Overcast sky, green pitch, rain interruptions, enough for the bowlers all day, and hard work for the batters. Day 1 of the fifth England-India Test at The Oval had a very English look and feel to it.
Even after 20 days of hard-fought cricket, that feeling was missing, and the opening day in London gave plenty of it. The beer taps continued to flow in the stands, but for a change, thanks to the weather, even the espresso machines had some decent queues when play got underway.
The spectators had plenty of options to enjoy their cricket, but for the ones in the middle, patience was going to be their only companion. From the time Ollie Pope asked India to bat in those challenging conditions, it was clear that this was going to be the sternest examination of the batters in the series so far.
This was the spiciest pitch of the tour, and it lived up to its billing with the assistance it provided to the quicks.

There was activity in the air, movement off the pitch, and the odd one kicked off the surface. 204/6 has left the day slightly in England's favour, with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar being the last recognised pair, but it could have been much worse had the bowlers used the conditions better.

Apart from Gus Atkinson, the others lacked consistent control, and there were looseners which allowed a release shot here and there.
It wasn't easy to deal with the moving Dukes, and rain interruptions only made life more difficult for the batters. Two, read KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, were guilty of throwing it away, one, read Shubman Gill, misjudged a run, and the remaining three got out to very good deliveries. Those three good deliveries were always going to come their way in these conditions, but it was the previous bunch of three which could have been avoided.
England did release the steam when Karun Nair did the repair job, first with Dhruv Jurel and then with Sundar, but it could have been a much worse day for the hosts had those three dismissals not happened. India assistant coach
Ryan ten Doeschate
summed up the day as "fair" and felt if they can stretch to 300, it will be a job well done by the batters. He lauded Sai Sudharsan for his patient knock before getting dismissed by a Josh Tongue peach!
"It's a fair day.
If we can push to 300, it will be a great score. Guys by and large did very well today. Sai Sudharsan played very nicely… two very good balls by Tongue," said ten Doeschate during the media interaction.
Ryan ten Doeschate press conference: On Jasprit Bumrah missing out, Shubman Gill run out, batting
The coach felt Gill's run-out was a misjudgment from the skipper.
"He is in the touch of his life; he made batting look easy today. England bowled very nicely today, and we spoke about accumulating runs during the break. Guys did a nice job accumulating runs, but it was a misjudgment of the run," added ten Doeschate.
It was a bizarre day of play that had everything: a bowler sprayed all over but bowled two unplayable deliveries; a player who was not sure of playing in this game scored a fighting unbeaten fifty; and a series that was played on very batting-friendly surfaces dished out the spiciest track—for the game in which both Jasprit Bumrah and
Jofra Archer
didn't feature in the Playing XI.
When Nair and Sundar come out to bat on the second day, they will be carrying the familiar feeling of not feeling set, no matter what score you are batting on. English conditions for you!

ENG vs IND 5th Test: How to watch live streaming of Day 3 action for free?

As Day 3 of the fifth and final Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy gets underway today at The Oval, London, between India and England, both teams will be ready to put everything on the line to deny the opposition an obvious advantage in the match. Both England and India performed equally well, bundling each other out for 224 and 247 respectively. However, India have made a strong comeback with the bat in the second innings, already securing a 52-run lead with 8 wickets in hand and three days of play still remaining. India's second-innings progress with the bat can somewhat be credited to English fielders, who had an awful day on Day 2, dropping catches and missing chances in bunches. The visitors just need to hold tight and bat for three more sessions if they wish to bat the hosts out of the game before the final innings begins. England vs India LIVE SCORE UPDATES 5th Test Day 3: All eyes on Jaiswal; play resumes at 3:30 PM IST

5th Test | ENG vs IND LIVE UPDATES: With sunny weather reported for the Oval on Saturday, India will try to maximise their batting efforts and take a huge second-innings lead with hopes of winning As the sun rises over the Oval, London, the 5th Test between India and England heads into an intense Day 3 with a chance to take control of the match on the line. India, despite trailing in the first four sessions of the match, came back with a fight to take the upper hand with a 52-run second-innings lead to end the second day's play. India still have 8 wickets in hand and will try to extend their lead past 250 to put the hosts under pressure before the final innings. Moreover, the first two days of the Test were heavily impacted by rain, but the weather report for Saturday is clear and sunny, which means batting conditions will be slightly better and the visitors will try to take full advantage of it. JaisBall on display In reply to England's fiery start in their own Bazball style, India presented their own JaisBall at the Oval. Yashasvi Jaiswal took the English bowlers to the cleaners in the final session of Day 2 to complete yet another Test fifty against the English team. The visitors still have Gill, Nair, Jadeja, and Sundar to come out to bat, which means the stage is set for them to end the series in a 2-2 draw—if they do not face yet another batting collapse. How can England make a comeback? England had the chance to put India under pressure early in the second innings, but their sloppy fielding and unpredictable bowling helped India establish control in the game. England dropped two catches of Jaiswal, who went on to score a half-century. Moreover, losing their strike bowler Chris Woakes due to injury did not help the cause. They need to bowl strict lines and take their catches if they wish to keep the match alive for themselves. What is the situation of the match ahead of Day 3? India, after being bundled out for 224 in the first innings, cleaned up England for 247 despite a 92-run opening stand between Duckett and Crawley. In their second innings, India lost two big wickets in the form of KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan, but Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 not out), along with Akash Deep (4 not out), finished the day with the scoreboard reading India 75 for 2, leading the second innings by 52 runs. Jasprit Bumrah to miss Asia Cup 2025? Report reveals Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar's thought-process on India pacer

Workload management has become a significant part of Jasprit Bumrah's career. The Indian pacer, who had missed a considerable amount of cricket due to injuries in 2025, played just three Tests in the ongoing series against England as a part of his workload management with two five-wicket hauls in his kitty. With no international cricket for the Indian team in August, Bumrah will be getting more than ample amount of rest to continue in the next three to four months. But the Indian thinktank of head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief of selectors Ajit Agarkar might rest Bumrah for the Asia Cup 2025, to be held in UAE, according to an NDTV report. Having missed on the World Test Championship (WTC) title in the last three editions despite coming so close (finished runners-up twice), the Shubman Gill-led side badly want to win the WTC 2025-27 cycle. Having already lost two Tests in the current cycle, the Indian management wants to keep their frontline pacer fresh for the Tests against West Indies and South Africa later this year. 'It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,' A BCCI source close the developments was quoted as saying to the website. 'If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies, or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take,' he added. The Asia Cup 2025 will be held in the UAE from September 9 with the final on September 28. India have been put in Group A alongside UAE, Pakistan and Oman. The defending champions open their campaign against UAE on September 10, followed by the high-octane clash four days later against Pakistan. India play their final group game against Oman on September 19. However the venues are yet to be decided.
