Rashmika Mandanna faces flak from Kodava community for claiming she's 1st Coorgi actor: ‘Forgot Prema, Gulshan Devaiah?'

Hindustan Times16 hours ago
A simple Google search for 'actors from Coorg' reveals a list of artists who have made it big in the film industry—from Prema to Varsha Bollamma and Gulshan Devaiah. This is why people from the Kodava community are miffed at Rashmika Mandanna for claiming she's 'probably the first actor' to enter this industry from Coorg. People were quick to correct her, as was actor Neravanda Prema. Rashmika Mandanna and her family hail from Coorg in Karnataka and she recently claimed to be the first actor from her community.
What did Rashmika Mandanna say?
In an interview with Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story last week, Rashmika spoke about how her family reacted when she told them she wanted to be an actor. She said, 'Conversations back home when I got my first paycheck weren't easy. Because, you know, in the Coorg community, nobody has ever entered the film industry. I think I am the first one in our whole community to have entered the industry. People were extremely judgy.'
Nervanda Prema says Kodava actors paved the way for Rashmika Mandanna
As per a Koduga Express report, famous Kannada actor Neravanda Prema, who was famous in the 1990s and early 2000s, responded when asked about Rashmika's statement, 'What is there for me to say? The Kodava community knows the truth. You should ask her (Rashmika) about her version of the statement. What can I say about it?'
However, she also pointed out that long before Rashmika's entry into films, others had paved the way for her. 'Before me, there was an actor, Shashikala from Coorg, who played supporting roles. Then I entered the film industry, and later many Kodavas have done well,' said Prema, who is known for her successful career in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema and is a recipient of the Karnataka State Film Award and Filmfare Best Actress awards.
Internet calls out Rashmika Mandanna's ignorance
Her statement also triggered a barrage of comments on YouTube and other social media platforms, with people pointing out her ignorance. 'She is not the first frm kodava community ...before that many artist have acted like prema, nidhi subbaih, harishika poonacha, tanisha kuppanda,' pointed out one person.
'She is only the actress who tell lie in front of media and people … Statement ' she is the first actress who came from Coorg city… '100% false statement…Thr was more then 5 to 6 actress who came from coorg …. Even she not born when 'Prema madam ' act in OM Kannada movie who from Coorg,' wrote another.
A miffed fan wrote, 'Rashmika maybe you are the only one who thinks u made it big. Yes definitely but u have also forgotten Gulshan devaiah too has made it big.'

Kingdom' Starring Vijay Devarakonda to Release Without Hindi Theatrical Version

Telugu cinema news: Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom has finally been announced. The film starring Bhagyashri and directed by Gowtam Tannanuri is set to be released in Telugu, Tamil and Telugu cinemas on 31st July 2025. Here are the Telugu Movies Updates which is makers have not announced a release date for the Hindi version, despite having released a teaser in Hindi four months earlier. The team may have decided to skip a theatrical release in Hindi, and instead release Saamraajya directly on Netflix. According to reports, Netflix originally had a different agreement with the producers. Due to the multiple delays, Netflix reportedly asked the team to release it in theaters as soon as they could. It wouldn't make sense to OTT release dates the Hindi version of the film without the support of major multiplex chains, and the eight-week rule between a theatrical and OTT updates release would complicate matters. The team has reportedly decided to bypass a theatrical release of the Hindi version in favor of a direct OTT reviews. A team official explanation is still to be received. I feel the producers need to step up the promotion game to create some hype and audiences to the theaters. Keep an eye out for interesting updates about Kingdom. The release of the Telugu Movie HQ Photos has been delayed twice. The film was originally scheduled for a May 30 summer release, but was later changed to July 4. The makers blamed the delay on the increased tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terrorist attacks of April 22nd, followed by Operation Sindoor. The release date was again pushed back.

DJ SixEight on the viral ‘Starboy' X ‘Praayam nammil' mix : ‘We have not used AI in the video'

Rominic Stephen, popularly as DJ SixEight, is a man of reintroductions. His DJ career, which began when he was a teenager, was cut short when he was 16. At the age of 22, the artiste hit the rewind button. And, now, Rominic has gone viral with his latest mix, which combines The Weeknd's hit track, 'Starboy' with the Malayalam number, 'Praayam nammil,' from the 1999 rom-com, Niram, giving a twist to the 'misunderstood' Prakash Mathew, a character played by Boban Alumoodan. The video has got over 1.8 million views on YouTube. The character Prakash, an accomplished singer, was engaged to Sona, essayed by Shalini. But it is her best friend, Aby, played by Kunchacko Boban, who marries her. While Kamal, director of the movie, does not address what happens to Prakash eventually, Rominic does. The character returns to the US with his parents and takes the music industry by storm. 'When I saw Niram as a child, I used to think Prakash was the villain who came in the way of the protagonists,' says Rominic over a call from Kochi. 'Once I grew up, I realised he did not do anything wrong and deserved a better ending and a character arc.' In the video, Prakash is shown to become an global music sensation, featured on international billboards. Singer Madonna, rappers Drake and Travis Scott, actor Tom Cruise, and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, among others, make an appearance in the video. Rominic has used clips from The Weeknd's music videos, adding that Prakash and The Weeknd have a similar body structure, which made the work easy. 'We have not used AI in the video at all. We manually replaced the face in each frame by generating Prakash's face, tracking it on The Weeknd's face and blending it. We had to track 6,500 frames. It took us one-and-a-half months for research and three months to do the video.' Rominic adds, 'Everyone has been reaching out to me, saying it is AI. We have a team that includes college students and working professionals. It is hurtful when we hear people crediting AI for our work,' says Rominic. His team includes Nandhu P, Ashwin (revision edits), Mohammed Shyfal (title), and Sreyas V Sasi, also known as Artholiq (artwork). Rominic feels that the positive response to the song is his reply to the flak he received for posting an edit of the same song. 'This time also we got negative comments, but then those who enjoyed the song replied to them.' 'I saw the video of a North Indian YouTuber enjoying the song. Then I saw a foreigner playing the drums to the track. There is a drum cover as well. I got clips from Australia, Canada and the USA that showed the song being played at their private parties,' says Rominic, whose interest in deejaying started during his early school days in Saudi Arabia. 'For one of our extra-curricular activities, my teacher showed footage of the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics. The camera kept focused on this one person, who was performing upbeat party music at his station.' It was DJ Tiesto, who made Rominic curious. 'A few years later, I came across another video of the Sensation White Party (an electronic dance music event). There must have been 20,000 people and in the centre was DJ Tiesto controlling that crowd,' recalls Rominic. He also admires artistes such as Afrojack, Zedd, The Weeknd and Eminem. Once he returned to India, he was trained by DJ Rvi at an academy called the Schools for DJ. After leaving deejaying, he studied VFX and motion graphics in Kochi and worked as a designer before he returned to music. 'It was post the pandemic that I got my first break with a mix of the Malayalam song, 'Pon kasavu' by KS Chithra and 'Stay' by Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. We played it at a concert and immediately released the video, which went viral,' says Rominic. The video garnered over 12 million views. The Six Eight YouTube channel currently has 201K subscribers. Rominic is set to bring out three originals and another mix later this year.

Surya Sethupathi on the nepotism tag: 'If I'm a nepo kid, it means my dad..."

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Surya Sethupathi , son of celebrated actor Vijay Sethupathi , is all set to carve his own path in the industry with his debut film, 'Phoenix.' But even before the film's release, he's already dealing with labels—specifically, the much-discussed 'nepo kid' tag. "As a nepo kid, you have to work harder than your dad" In a recent chat with News18 Showsha, Surya offered a mature, clear-headed response to the label, saying he has no issues with it. 'There's nothing wrong with calling someone a nepo kid,' Surya said. 'It just means your father had some legacy, right? You're starting something new. But as a nepo kid, you have to work harder than your dad. There's a barrier, and crossing it will come with struggles, but those struggles will teach you.' Phoenix - Official Trailer 'My father gives me 500 rupees daily" Surya's view on nepotism is rooted in his lived experiences. Despite being the son of one of the most respected actors in Tamil cinema, his life wasn't all luxury and shortcuts. 'I've come here after facing hardships since childhood,' he said. 'My father gives me 500 rupees daily for expenses. That's how I've been brought up, and that's why I've come here to win in cinema.' Debut with 'Phoenix' and big aspirations ahead Surya's debut film, Phoenix, is directed by stunt master-turned-filmmaker Anl Arasu and features a strong ensemble cast including Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Devadarshini, J. Vignesh, Sampath Raj, and Sreejith Ravi. An excerpt from the ETimes review for the film reads, "Phoenix's technical excellence elevates the material considerably. Velraj's cinematography captures the gritty violence with visceral impact, while Sam CS delivers a score that matches the film's energy. High production values ensure this debut vehicle is polished. As a star-making exercise, Phoenix succeeds in establishing its young lead's action credentials. As compelling cinema, it feels hollow despite its emotional backstory. The film works best when viewed as a well-crafted commercial entertainer rather than a nuanced thriller."
