A popular outdoor flea market in California was left empty after a false rumor about an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid was spread by a Fresno city councilmember and spun out of control online — ruining the weekend for many vendors who rely on the market for income.
Fresno Councilmember Miguel Arias warned of an impending ICE raid at the Cherry Avenue Auction, which typically draws thousands of locals each weekend, during a council meeting on Thursday.
'We have learned that this weekend, ICE is planning to engage in a massive immigration raid at the Cherry Auction in Fresno. So, I would advise our immigrant community to stay away from the Cherry Auction this weekend, as they could be putting themselves and their families at risk of being picked up,' Arias said.

The warning was enough to put many residents of Fresno and Easton, the community that hosts the market, on high alert.
Many heard Arias' warnings repeated on TikTok, and one man stood about a block from the market over the weekend holding a sign reading 'La migra está en el remate,' or 'immigration is at the auction' in English, The Fresno Bee reported.

Even so, the Cherry Avenue Auction insisted that it had 'no knowledge of any planned ICE raid' and had 'not been notified of any such action.'
'We are also aware of recent public comments by Councilmember Miguel Arias, claiming to have knowledge of an ICE raid at our location. Since Cherry Avenue Auction is located within Fresno County jurisdiction — not the city of Fresno — we find it puzzling and offensive that a city councilmember would claim to possess such information,' the auction wrote in a statement.
Many vendors were disappointed by the small turnout at the usually packed swap meet and struggled to fathom how they would supplement the lost earnings as the market drew to a close.
'I don't see the way I'm going to make any money out here today. This is my main source of income and today is one of the most important days of the week for me, so it's really affecting me,' Robert Brambila, who has sold outdoor work gear at the market for three decades, told The Bee.

Other vendors echoed Brambila's sentiments — and struggled to understand Arias' decision-making.
'If Arias just spread a rumor, he caused people to lose a lot of money today. He scared a lot of Mexicans away,' Devon Solis, a vendor who sells plants and clothing with her family, told The Bee.
In the wake of the market's washout weekend, Arias surmised that the ICE raid didn't take place because of the immigrant community 'exercising precaution' following his warnings.
'Please continue sharing ICE activity taking place in your area, as it has become the best way to keep each other safe during President Trump's cruel ICE raids,' Arias wrote on Facebook.

A mother walking with her children in Pasadena was taken into custody by immigration agents over the weekend in an incident that was partially captured on video and has drawn sharp criticism from witnesses. Rosalina Luna Vargas, a mother of two and the primary breadwinner for her family, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Saturday morning around 8 a.m., according to bystanders. A third man, appearing younger and without any visible identification, also participated. 'I saw the commotion while driving, and when I slowed down, the kids shouted for help,' Reed said. 'They kept asking for a warrant. They told the officers they would stop resisting if they just showed them a warrant. One of the men said he had one but didn't show it.' The video cuts off just as Vargas's daughter pleads with Reed to call the police. According to Reed, she did call 911, reporting what she believed at the time to be a possible kidnapping. As the situation escalated, Vargas allegedly broke free from the agents and ran into the courtyard of the nearby Del Mar Park Assisted Living Facility, with her children following close behind. The agents pursued, but were confronted again by the children, who physically tried to shield their mother. 'They formed a human wall,' Reed said. 'One of the kids clung to her, telling her, 'Don't let go! Don't let go!' while crying. Then he started shouting to the crowd, 'I can't lose my mom!'' Reed said the staff at the assisted living facility intervened, telling the agents they were on private property and could not proceed without a warrant. The agents, she said, took photos of everyone present—including Reed—before leaving in two separate vehicles. Pasadena police later arrived and took statements from those at the scene. According to Reed, ICE agents returned later and took Vargas into custody. A family member told Reed the warrant in question was for someone else entirely, and that Vargas and her children had simply been 'in the wrong place at the wrong time.' Community members say the incident highlights growing concerns over ICE's arrest tactics and the lack of transparency in operations conducted in public areas without coordination with local law enforcement. Reed, still shaken, called the incident 'horrific' and questioned whether law enforcement procedures were followed. 'Only two of the three men had badges, and none were in uniform,' she said. Democrats' push to ban ICE agents' masking shows whose side they're really on
New York's lefty lawmakers just blocked reviving the state's ban on masking by protesters, and now two Manhattan Democrats, Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat, have turned around to push a federal ban on masking by ICE agents, even when nabbing dangerous gangbangers. Their 'No Secret Police Act' would bar Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other Homeland Security officers from concealing their faces during civil immigration enforcement and require them to clearly display official ID and insignia. California Democrats are proposing a similar state ban on any face masks for law enforcement officers; expect other progressive bastions to join in. Advertisement Hmm: Homeland Security recently reported that ICE enforcement officers are facing a 413% increase in assaults against them. Plus, in the aftermath of the LA riots, 'ICE officers' family members have been doxed and targeted as well.' Reprisals against family of law-enforcers are a classic tactic of the cartels and gangs such as Tren de Aragua and MS-13. Advertisement Meanwhile, progressives are dead-set against stopping their allies from masking. Rioters and aggressive 'protesters' have been routinely concealing their faces since at least the 2020 anti-policing demonstrations; it's grown even more common among the 'tentifada' set in demos since Oct. 7, 2023. Anonymity not only makes it easier to get away with violent lawbreaking, it helps intimidate others and may encourage the masked to get out of control. But it's pretty strange to focus on outing the identities of officers trying to arrest illegal immigrants with ties to violent gangs even as your political compadres are protecting Antifa radicals and the new wave of antisemitic goons.
