Health Ministry to issue advisories on outdoor activities

PETALING JAYA : The Cabinet has directed the Health Ministry to issue advisories on the suitability of outdoor activities amid the ongoing heatwave and changing weather conditions brought on by the Southwest Monsoon. At the weekly press conference yesterday, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil also reminded the public to remain vigilant and to refer to weather warnings issued by the Meteorological Department. The Southwest Monsoon, which typically brings drier conditions and lower humidity, is expected to persist until September. 'The Health Ministry has been tasked to provide appropriate guidance on outdoor activities based on prevailing weather conditions,' he said. On a separate matter, Fahmi said there were no in-depth discussions on the chief justice's appointment, adding that they would adhere to what was stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly. Commenting on the prime minister's visit to Jakarta last Friday, Fahmi said the discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto were positive, and one of the outcomes was an agreement to restart the annual consultation sessions between the leaders of both countries. He said Anwar and his delegation are expected to return to Jakarta on July 29 for the consultation session, which will coincide with events at the Asean Secretariat in the Indonesian capital. 'Several-long standing issues between Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to be raised during the upcoming annual bilateral consultation, scheduled to take place at the end of July.' Fahmi also said the forum remains a key platform for both nations to exchange views and chart a way forward on important matters, including the Ambalat maritime boundary dispute, which has remained unresolved for over two to three decades. The dispute stems from overlapping maritime claims between Indonesia and Malaysia. 'It is not a new issue. As the prime minister mentioned, several technical aspects will be reviewed. 'The upcoming discussions will serve as a starting point, not a conclusion,' he said, adding that the last bilateral consultation was in 2017.

India backs Malaysia's ASEAN vision, strengthens Myanmar ties

KUALA LUMPUR: India has pledged strong backing for Malaysia's role as ASEAN Chair this year, endorsing its emphasis on regional stability and growth. High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, affirmed the alignment with Malaysia's ASEAN priorities during an interview with Bernama TV. Reddy stated, 'India is keen to align with the core themes of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship - 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', as well as ASEAN Centrality.' He further stressed India's interest in boosting connectivity with ASEAN via Myanmar, adding, 'We would like to see a prosperous and stable Myanmar, which is where our alignment comes with ASEAN.' The diplomat noted that ASEAN-India relations have progressed to a comprehensive strategic partnership. India's delegation will participate in the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur with a constructive approach. Pabitra Margherita, India's Minister of State for External Affairs, is set to attend, outlining India's regional agenda ahead of the ASEAN-India Summit in October. On bilateral relations, Reddy highlighted Malaysia's growing global influence and regional responsibilities. He pointed to the deep cultural and economic links, with Malaysia home to the largest Indian diaspora outside the U.S., exceeding two million people. 'A partner country like Malaysia is very significant for us. We call Malaysia part of our extended neighbourhood,' he said.

Ministry ensures funding for Malaysian Media Council soon

PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry is working to secure funding for the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) as soon as possible, according to Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. A follow-up meeting with the 12-member founding board will be held to discuss council-related matters. Fahmi confirmed that an initial online meeting had taken place, with plans for an in-person session soon. 'As some representatives are outside the Klang Valley, we will arrange a suitable time for all to attend,' he said during a press conference. The MMC founding board includes four representatives each from media companies, associations, practitioners, and non-media members. The council aims to strengthen media governance and professionalism in Malaysia. Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet was briefed on Op Kesan 4.0, an enforcement operation by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) to prevent profiteering following the revised Sales and Service Tax (SST) implementation. He urged the public to report unreasonable price hikes, assuring that KPDN would act swiftly. On public health concerns, Fahmi noted that the Health Ministry (MOH) has been instructed to monitor the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, which brings extreme heat until September. The public is advised to heed MetMalaysia's weather warnings and MOH's health advisories.
