Tinie Tempah says nightlife crisis means ‘losing that physical connection'

The 36-year-old rapper, from south London, is backing the Night Time Industries Association's (NTIA) The Last Night Out campaign, which pushes for people to get away from their screens and onto the dance floor.
'As a dad, I've seen how different things are for this generation,' said Tempah, who has not released a studio album since 2017's Youth, as he appears to have focused towards his children and taken a break from music.
'We're losing that physical connection, the joy and energy that you get from dancing, meeting new people from all backgrounds and being free.
'I didn't want to just talk about it – I wanted to do something. Music brings people together – and nightlife is where that magic happens.'
The campaign calls on the Government to step up and provide urgent financial support for night-time venues as well as cultural protection for 'iconic clubs'.
The NTIA released data last year showing 37% of nightclubs had closed across the UK since March 2020.
Tempah has returned to the studio and is developing a collaboration with gaming platforms Roblox and Fortnite to integrate music and virtual life, according to the NTIA.
He is also creating a short film and a series of live events focused on 'driving energetic movement and nightlife', which will be unveiled at technology, creative and business conference SXSW London on Friday.
He will be joined at the event at London nightclub XOYO by NTIA chief executive Michael Kill, north London musician and DJ Majestic and BBC Radio 1 DJ Charlie Tee for a 'one-off evening of music, culture and conversation about the future of the UK's night-time economy'.

Mr Kill said: 'It's been amazing to see how Tinie Tempah has resonated with The Last Night Out's message.
'He really understands what's at stake – not just for club culture, but for society.
'Nightlife isn't just entertainment; it's a space for freedom, creativity, connection and movement. We're thrilled to have Tinie Tempah bring his voice, his energy and his music to the campaign.'
Introduced to the NTIA by the Mayor of London's office, Tempah believes the shared experience of nightlife is an important part of the UK's future society.
Tempah, known for hits including Written In The Stars and Pass Out, has presented the six-part art show Extraordinary Portraits as well as a property programme called Extraordinary Extensions.
His recent music has included the 2021 track Love Me Like This with Swedish singer Maia Wright, and 2023 song How You Samba, a collaboration with Dutch DJ Kris Kross Amsterdam and Mexican singer and songwriter Sofia Reyes.

One Day in Southport forgets the tragedy at the heart of the film

One Day in Southport (Channel 4) purported to be a documentary about the devastating tragedy that unfolded at a Taylor Swift -themed dance class on Merseyside a year ago. Rather like the appalling crime itself, however, the film was soon hijacked by other issues entirely. The result was grimly gripping but ultimately unsatisfying. Bafta-winning documentarian Dan Reed – director of Leaving Neverland and The Truth vs Alex Jones – investigated the mass stabbing, its febrile aftermath and the nationwide riots which followed. It proved too much to adequately examine in 51 minutes Reed began his story in simmeringly powerful style. A survivor relived the unfathomable knife attack and read aloud from her quietly furious letter to the perpetrator in prison. As she courageously did so, the camera lingered on her haunted eyes and shaking hands. This was intercut with dashcam and CCTV footage of a masked, hooded 17-year-old taking a taxi to Hart Space dance studio, silently getting out without paying and calmly entering the building. It was deeply chilling to watch, the stuff of a low-budget horror movie, before all hell broke loose. We heard screams, sirens and the testimony of parents who arrived on the scene to sights and smells they will never be able to forget. As misinformation about the knife man's identity spread online, the Southport community took to the streets. Angry mobs clashed with police. A local mosque was surrounded and set alight, while the terrified imam and worshippers hid inside. Ground-level visuals – a pacy mix of news footage, phone camera clips and social media reportage – were immersive, stressful and scary. It was instructive to witness how, in the absence of accurate intel about the murderer's identity, irresponsible speculation filled the vacuum. The assumption took hold that he was an illegal immigrant and a Muslim extremist. The authorities were too slow to disclose that Axel Rudakubana was actually Cardiff-born with Rwandan Christian parents. We saw how anti-immigration protests and riots spread to 27 towns and cities across the UK. Fuelled by far-Right rhetoric, Muslim neighbourhoods and asylum seekers were targeted by rampaging mobs. In post-apocalyptic scenes, a migrant hotel was stormed and a car full of Romanian workers vandalised. The Government and law enforcement were completely unprepared, scrambling to catch up with the escalating crisis. When they finally did act, they over-compensated with 1,800 rioters arrested, fast-tracked through courts and sentenced to a total of more than 100 years in prison. There were wider questions raised here. YouTuber Daniel Edwards described the protests as the 'consequences of not listening to the public'. Videographer Wendell Daniel argued that post-Covid disaffection isn't about race but about social class. Topics tantalisingly touched upon included two-tier policing and mistrust of mainstream media. Yet framed within a film about a tragedy which felt quickly forgotten, both the personal and the political were done a disservice. As the stricken Southport families mourned or recovered in hospital, narrative focus was elsewhere. We heard about flashbacks, trauma and survivors' guilt, but all too fleetingly. Rudakubana's victims condemned the rioting and rejected the politicisation of the girls' murders. 'It didn't represent me at all,' said one survivor. You wonder what they will make of this strangely scattergun film.

Musician calls out 'appalling' artist pay as new label-led deal for artists announced

The Government announced label-led measures to raise the earning of songwriters and session musicians in the UK, but veteran violinist Jennifer Maslin and the Musicians' Union say the changes fall flat After the UK government announced new measures to boost the earnings of songwriters, session musicians and legacy artists, one veteran session violinist says she's not impressed. While the new deal is being touted by the Government as the 'best deal' for artists, Jennifer Maslin says the meagre increase is still far from a living wage. ‌ On July 22, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced a 'major boost for UK music creators' backed by major record labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. The plans were put forward by the Creator Remuneration Working Group (CRWG) which is chaired by Sir Chris Bryant. ‌ The changes estimated by labels are expected to 'deliver tens of millions of pounds in new investment to support musicians by 2030'. The new measures also include a framework for legacy artists to renegotiate their contracts to increase their streaming earnings for existing work. ‌ Inside the AI music controversy clouding The Beatles' historic BRIT nomination Support for songwriters and composers includes a commitment to the payment of per diems and expenses for recording sessions, to ensure they are not left out of pocket. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and Musicians' Union have also agreed to raise session fees of up to 40 percent for pop sessions and 15 percent for classical sessions. Speaking to NME about the new measures, Sir Chris said: 'I honestly feel that this deal that we've struck here in the UK is the best deal there is in the world '. However session artists like Jennifer are unconvinced. ‌ Jennifer is a solo and session violinist in the UK with over three decades of experience. Speak to The Mirror she says the new deal is a step in the right direction but falls short, especially for classical musicians. "It's a great step forward that some recognition is finally being given to the appalling pay musicians are expected to live off.' Referencing Grammy-winning artist Raye and her infamous Ivor Novello Awards speech, Jennifer says: 'Raye was right that it's an insult songwriters are expected to work for free.' ‌ While she applauds Sir Chris' efforts to address the situation, Jennifer says that the £75 for songwriters in a gig economy 'with no pension or sick pay benefits' is still 'well under the living wage for a full working day'. She acknowledges that when it comes to recording session fees, 'things look brighter for pop session musicians though'. 'Let's hope we're now on the path to not being asked 'Is this your only job?' - and respecting being a musician for the training, artistry and dedication it requires,' she concludes. The Musicians' Union (MU) - the UK trade union which represents musicians in negotiations with employers, including major industry players - is also unimpressed by the new deal. Musicians' Union General Secretary Naomi Pohl told The Mirror: "We are grateful to Minister Chris Bryant for the pressure he has put on record labels, and the majors in particular, to improve terms for artists on older contracts.' ‌ However, she says that while session rates were increased: 'this doesn't address a lack of royalties for session musicians and we also want to see modern royalty rates for all signed artists. The fundamental problems with music streaming economics remain.' MU says it will soon launch a petition calling for copyright reform. According to Naomi: 'We have also secured an additional meeting with the Minister in September to discuss session musician remuneration specifically." The Council of Music Makers, which includes the MU, is seeking: a minimum digital royalty rate for all new and legacy artists; a rolling commitment to write-off unrecouped balances of signed artists after 20 years; rights reversion so artists and songwriters can reclaim their rights after a set period of time; streaming royalties for session musicians; and a right to contract adjustment.
