Novak Djokovic wins against Flavio Cobolli to secure his 14th Wimbledon semifinal spot, aiming for a historic 25th major singles title.
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic won in a challenging match against Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday, bagging a record 14th men's Wimbledon semifinal spot, which promises to be a thrilling encounter against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
Djokovic, aiming for a historic 25th major singles title, received commendation from Britain's Queen Camilla after his 6-7 (6/8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win against Cobolli on Centre Court.
Djokovic faced a tough challenge from the Italian 22nd seed but overpowered the 23-year-old, who had never advanced beyond the third round of a Grand Slam before.

Djokovic expressed his affection for Wimbledon, calling it the 'most special tournament" in the sport, as the crowd cheered him on.
'It means the world to me that I'm still able at 38 to compete in the final stages of Wimbledon," he stated.
'Thank you for cheering for my age. I appreciate it. It's beautiful. Makes me feel very young.
'And I guess another thing that makes me feel very young is competing with youngsters, you know, like Cobolli today — he's who knows how many years younger than me."
Djokovic prepared for the match by meeting Camilla, wife of King Charles III, who told him she was keeping her 'fingers crossed" for his game. She watched the match from the Royal Box, accompanied by British actor Hugh Grant.
Djokovic, who has reached every Wimbledon final since 2018, served for the first set at 5-3, but the Italian broke back and won the subsequent tie-break.
Cobolli, who has won titles in Bucharest and Hamburg this year, then faced the challenge of maintaining his level against the 24-time major champion.
However, the second set saw a different story as Djokovic broke twice to level the match in the evening sunshine.
Both players exchanged service breaks early in the third set, but Djokovic seized control in the 11th game and closed the set with a thunderous ace.
The fourth set was tight, but Cobolli missed a straightforward winner at the net in the ninth game.
Djokovic slipped awkwardly while serving for the match, grimacing in pain, but managed to get up and finish.
Djokovic downplayed the incident in his post-match interview.
'I had a nasty slip, but that's what happens when you play on grass," he said.
'It did come at an awkward moment, but somehow I managed to find a good serve and close it out. I'm going to visit this subject now with my physio, and hopefully I'll be well in two days."
Djokovic now holds the record for most Wimbledon men's singles semi-final appearances, surpassing eight-time champion Roger Federer, who reached the last four 13 times.
Djokovic has also reached his 52nd major semi-final, extending his record in men's tennis. He is now two victories away from breaking his tie with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles by any player, male or female.
If Djokovic makes it to and wins Sunday's final, he will equal Federer's record of eight men's titles at the All England Club as well.
Sinner, who defeated 10th seed Ben Shelton earlier Wednesday, will present a new challenge.
The top seed has won his past four matches against Djokovic, including a straight-sets victory in the semi-finals of the recent French Open.
Carlos Alcaraz, who has defeated Djokovic in the past two finals at Wimbledon, will face US fifth seed Taylor Fritz in the other semi-final on Friday.

Wimbledon heat crisis: Fans bake under heatwave as venue runs out of water

Fans at Wimbledon were left struggling after several water refill points were shut down in the middle of a heatwave, according to a report by the Sun. Wimbledon's sponsor, Evian, was left embarrassed after it had to stop selling its new eco-friendly bottles, which customers were supposed to refill all day. Wimbledon's sponsor, Evian, blamed 'exceptionally hot weather' for the water crisis. (REUTERS) What is considered the hottest tournament in the event's 147-year history led to the interruption of the Wimbledon semifinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. The game was stopped twice after two fans fell ill due to the extreme heat. Reportedly, the mercury hit 31C in the area. What did the company say? 'The exceptionally hot weather, combined with how popular the Evian refill system has been with both players and spectators, has resulted in demand being far higher than we have seen in previous years… As a result, we've had to stop offering Evian refill earlier than planned,' an Evian spokesperson told the Sun. The company blamed the extreme weather conditions, adding they increased the demand for water from spectators and athletes. Though the eco-friendly dispensers were shut off, the company's red-top bottles were available at the shop. There was access to free tap water, with more than 100 refill points. Calls to close retractable roof: 'From what I saw and heard on different tournaments, they're usually not willing to close the roof when it's not raining, when it's not a necessity. I'm not sure why,' Polish finalist Iga Swiatek told the Sun while questioning why the venue's £70 million retractable roof was not shut. The roof, which was completed in 2009, has never been closed due to hot weather. It takes about 10 minutes to shut. 'I felt like I was getting tired throughout some points of the match,' said US ace Anisimova. Belarusian player Sabalenka remarked, 'London is not ready for this weather.'

Forza Azzurri! Australian Burns Finds Identity As Italy Create History

Last Updated: Regardless of what happens in the event, Italian cricket team's legacy is already set as first-time entrants to the global event. Joe Burns' career seemed to be going nowhere when Queensland left him out of their contracted players' list in April 2024. This was a tough blow for the Australian, who was already grieving the tragic death of his brother in February that year. In an emotional Instagram post, Burns confessed that it was a 'daily battle that I often lose." However, sports often offer small escape routes to those truly dedicated, and for Burns, it came through his connection to Italy via his mother's heritage. This was a blessing for both Burns and Italy, who qualified for their first ICC World Cup by securing a spot in next year's T20 event in India and Sri Lanka on Friday. 'I don't think words will ever describe emotions to this team and to this country. Sacrifice, dedication and commitment to a dream — we have walked this path into the unknown together to tour the first World Cup," Burns wrote on his Instagram wall shortly after the team's qualification. Burns' emotions were genuine. This opportunity allowed him to continue his association with top-level cricket and provided Italy with a world-class professional who had significant experience in international and highly competitive Australian domestic cricket. Burns Starts New Journey With Italy Italy quickly appointed Burns as their captain in their effort to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 through the European sub-regional Qualifiers. In the group stage, the team was grouped with France, Isle of Man, Luxembourg, and Turkey. It was a big dream for a team that played its first T20 International in 2019 against Germany. Despite a lack of pedigree and resources, they dared to dream. They started strong with a 77-run win over Luxembourg in Rome and followed it with a five-wicket victory over France and a seven-wicket win against Isle of Man. The nine-wicket win over Turkey propelled them to the final against Romania, which they won by a massive 160-run margin in June 2024. Burns made a lasting impact in that victory with a 108 off 55 balls. This powered Italy to the ICC European Qualifiers, where they were grouped with Netherlands, Scotland, Jersey, and Guernsey. They began with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Guernsey and outclassed Scotland by 12 runs. An abandoned match against Jersey gave them a point, which, combined with a superior net run rate, allowed Italy to overcome the nine-wicket defeat against Netherlands in the last league match on Friday and qualify for the ICC event to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. It was a moment of catharsis for Italy and Burns. The Azzurri have delicate cricket connections, as AC Milan Cricket and Football clubs were founded by an Englishman – Herbert Kilpin – in 1899. Former Italian and Inter Milan forward Cristian Vieri was a cricket enthusiast during his school days in Australia and often spoke passionately about the sport. Italian Cricket's Identity But now, Italian cricket has an identity of its own. Burns' mention of walking together in his Instagram post was not a mere fancy tribute. This Italian team is indeed a mix of cultures. Burns is an Australian, as are Harry Manenti, Ben Manenti, and Grant Stewart. Emilio Gay, who was part of the England Lions against India A, and Marcus Campopiano came from England. There cannot be an Associate cricket team without a touch of the subcontinent, and thus Italy has Jaspreet Singh, who is from Punjab, and Crishan Priyantha Kalugamage, who has Sri Lankan roots. Justin and Anthony Mosca add some Italian flavour. 'I hope this team can be a beacon for everyone to connect through family, through sport and through a shared story," an emotional Burns penned. But Italy needs to overcome more accomplished rivals in the World Cup next year to add more chapters to an already incredible story. 'I think it's coming together, the confidence is high in the group and we've got some very experienced players in the team, experience from all over the world as well," the team's assistant coach Kevin O'Brien, a former Ireland player, told ICC. Regardless of what happens in the event, this team's legacy is already set as first-time entrants to the global event. They are no longer the unknowns. They are confident competitors in a field dominated by the big boys. Burns can lead the side with pride, having set aside a crushing personal trauma to find a new purpose in life and career. He knows it. 'Many of those who walk with us forever be proud. Without them, we never have dared to dream. This is our legacy," he wrote. Forza Azzurri! Maresca praises PSG but vows Chelsea will stick to their game plan in Club World Cup final

New York: Enzo Maresca is full of respect for Chelsea's FIFA Club World Cup final opponents Paris Saint-Germain and the threat they carry, but won't be changing the approach to the game which has got them this far in the competition. There is just one more match remaining in what has been a long season as both sides bid to be crowned champions in Sunday's (local time) final at the MetLife Stadium. As would be expected for such a high-profile final, though, challenges don't get much bigger than the one which stands between Chelsea and the trophy. Their opponents, Paris Saint-Germain, impressed in beating Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League and have continued in the same style in the USA, notably with a 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the semis. "What worries me about Paris Saint-Germain is what worries me about any team. We are trying to help the team prepare for the match in the best way possible, by giving all the information possible to the players so they can perform on the pitch. I respect every team, but the way I prepare for the match on Sunday is the same way I prepared for the match against the Brazilian teams,' said Maresca in the pre-game press conference. However, that doesn't mean the Italian head coach will be taking Paris Saint-Germain's threat lightly. Quite the opposite, as he was quick to underline just how much respect he has for the recently crowned European champions. 'I agree with most people that say they are the best team in Europe and the world. The reason why is that they are showing this in France, the Champions League and this competition. We have maximum respect for them and I really enjoy watching them, but we are here to do our best and to win the final. For sure, it will be difficult, but for me all the games are difficult,' added Maresca. Furthermore, Maresca believes PSG are currently setting the benchmark with their success on the domestic and European scenes. 'For sure, PSG and their manager, Luis Enrique, are a reference for all people that love football. At the same time, we have our style and we showed during the season the way we want to do things, on and off the ball. They are a team that likes to keep the ball, of course, we do too. They also like to press high up and we do the same,' he said.
