Sadiq reaffirms parliament's support for overseas Pakistanis

Express Tribune14-04-2025
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday reaffirmed Parliament's collective resolve to address the challenges faced by overseas Pakistanis, stressing that both the government and opposition remain united on the matter.
Speaking at the inaugural Overseas Pakistanis Convention, he said that every member of the National Assembly, regardless of political party, fully supports the cause of the overseas community.
"Our fellow Pakistanis living abroad are the true ambassadors of our country," he said. "Your support and partnership are crucial for building a better future for everyone."
He described overseas Pakistanis as the backbone of the nation, playing a key role in connecting Pakistan with the world. "Your actions and words shape how the world sees our country," he added.
The speaker appreciated the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation for launching a new initiative to address the challenges faced by expatriates.
He urged overseas Pakistanis to share their concerns so the government could respond with effective solutions.
"Whether it's through business, education, or promoting Pakistan's image abroad, your contributions are significant," he said. Recalling his recent meetings with global dignitaries—including the Speaker of Saudi Arabia and elected officials from the United States—he noted that many praised the achievements of Pakistanis living overseas.
"When international leaders speak highly of our citizens abroad, it makes us proud. It reflects the hard work and integrity of our people," he said.
"The purpose of this convention is to listen to your voices. The National Assembly belongs to you as much as it does to us," he said. "Although dual nationals are currently not allowed to contest elections, this issue needs fresh discussion in the parliament."
He stressed the importance of recognizing those who send large amounts of money back home. "You send more remittances than the country earns through exports. If we honour top exporters, why not top remitters?" he asked.
He supported the idea of giving top remitters the honorary status of "roaming ambassadors."
Sadiq also emphasized the importance of using formal remittance channels and ending the use of informal systems like hundi. "Money sent through legal means strengthens the economy, increases tax collection, and brings transparency. Those using official channels should not face unnecessary scrutiny or extra taxes," he said.
He acknowledged the difficulties overseas that Pakistanis face at embassies, particularly in countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. "People who send money home should be treated with the same respect at embassies as ministers and MNAs. Why can't we offer them that dignity?" he asked.

Listen to article The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified another Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislator, Abdul Latif Chitrali, and declared his National Assembly seat (NA-1, Upper and Lower Chitral) vacant, following the denotification of his electoral victory. This decision comes after Chitrali was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Anti-Terrorism Court for his involvement in the violent events of May 9. The official notification issued by the ECP stated, 'As a result, Abdul Latif Chitrali stands disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.' Also Read: Shah Mahmood Qureshi acquitted, Yasmin Rashid sentenced to 10 years The court's ruling and the subsequent ECP action have led to the vacancy of Chitrali's seat in the National Assembly, marking a significant development in the aftermath of the May 9 events. A day earlier, ECP issued disqualification notifications for three PTI lawmakers, including Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, following their convictions by an anti-terrorism court. In a notification issued Monday, the ECP confirmed the disqualification of Chaudhry, MNA Muhammad Ahmad Chattha, and Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar. All three were handed 10-year prison sentences under anti-terrorism charges. Read More: Imran involved in May 9 conspiracy, rules LHC Senator Chaudhry was found guilty by an anti-terrorism court and is no longer eligible to remain a member of the Senate under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, the ECP said. 'The anti-terrorism court has declared Ejaz Chaudhry guilty and sentenced him to ten years,' the notification stated. Meanwhile, ATC Lahore acquitted six PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Hamza Azeem, in connection with the May 9 riots, while sentencing 10 others, including Dr Yasmin Rashid, to 10 years in prison. May 9 Riots The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan, after which PTI leaders and workers staged protests targeting both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the GHQ in Rawalpindi. The military condemned the events as a "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act. As a result of the unrest, many PTI members were arrested and tried in military courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan's nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. In January, 19 convicts had their sentences pardoned following successful mercy appeals, although PTI expressed dissatisfaction over the limited number of pardons. The military trials had initially been halted following a Supreme Court ruling but were resumed following the court's instructions to finalise pending cases and announce judgments for those involved in the violent incidents.

ECP disqualifies PTI MNA Abdul Latif Chitrali over May 9 conviction

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday formally de-notified Abdul Latif Chitrali as a Member of the National Assembly from NA-1 (Chitral Upper cum Chitral Lower) after declaring him disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution. According to an official notification issued by the ECP, the disqualification came in light of the commission's order dated July 29, 2025. The notification stated that as a result of the disqualification, Abdul Latif's National Assembly seat has become vacant. Chitrali, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami, was elected to the lower house of Parliament from Chitral in the 2024 general elections. His disqualification stems from a conviction by an anti-terrorism court earlier this year for delivering hate speech during a protest in Chitral. The court handed him a five-year sentence under Section 9 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, a conviction upheld by the Peshawar High Court. Under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, a person is disqualified from being elected or remaining a member of Parliament if convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude and sentenced to more than two years in prison, unless a period of five years has lapsed since the release. The ECP's decision follows weeks of legal scrutiny and comes as part of its constitutional mandate to ensure that elected representatives fulfil the requirements set out in the Constitution. The de-notification paves the way for a by-election in NA-1, though no schedule has yet been announced. The development comes a day after the ECP disqualified three PTI lawmakers - Senator Ijaz Chaudhry, Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar and MNA Ahmed Chattha - and declared their seats vacant.

Ex-Indian minister slams Modi over Pahalgam: ‘Don't blame Pakistan without proof'

NEW DELHI: Former Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that there is no evidence of Pakistan's involvement in the Pahalgam terrorist attack; the attackers were Indian nationals. Chidambaram, who is a member of the opposition Congress, questioned the Modi government 'Why does the Indian government assume that the attackers came from Pakistan? Has the government identified them as Pakistanis?' Congress leader P Chidambaram triggered a massive political controversy with his comment in an interview, in which he said 'homegrown terrorists' could be involved in the Pahalgam terror attack. He also said that 'there is no evidence' so far that the killers came from Pakistan. Chidambaram in an interview with The Quint said, 'Have they identified the terrorists? Where they came from? I mean, for all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume that they came from Pakistan? There's no evidence of that.' Chidambaram also questioned BJP government's 'silence' on the issue. 'And why is the Prime Minister not speaking on Operation Sindoor? Why do you think there's a reluctance to have a debate in the temple of democracy? That's what Parliament is. After all, Prime Minister Modi has addressed the nation. He's addressed various rallies,' he said. Reacting sharply to his remarks, BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya posted on 'X' that 'Congress rushes to give a clean chit to Pakistan'. 'Why is it that every time our forces confront Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, Congress leaders sound more like Islamabad's defence lawyers than India's opposition?' Malviya asked. As row erupted over his remark, Chidambaram in a post on X said, 'The worst kind is a troll who suppresses the full recorded interview, takes two sentences, mutes some words, and paints the speaker in a black colour!'
