‘Squid Game' Star Lee Jung-jae on His Hopes for Gi-hun's Daughter and the ‘Harsh' Finale Diet That Pushed Him to the Edge
Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun has always been the beating heart of 'Squid Game,' and his ultimate sacrifice allows the dour finale to have a flash of humanity shine through.

Lee spoke with Variety about the day he learned Player 456's fate, his conversations with 'Squid Game' creator Hwang Dong-hyuk about the series finale and his hopes for Gi-hun's daughter.
Now that it's all been released, I think the ending was definitely something that a lot of the audience didn't expect to see. I know there are a lot of people with a wide variety of different opinions about the ending, and I'm following up on all of them. I know a lot of you like to express what you thought about the ending on social media, so I'm trying to check all of them.
I got the entire script for Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time, and I read everything the day that I got it. That's when I learned about my character's fate and the ending. I was very shocked too, because it was not something I had expected to see. I remember speaking a lot about this ending with Director Hwang, and I asked him, 'Did you have different endings in mind? Were there different versions?' And he told me that he did think of other endings. However, he did share with me that he believed this was the right way to end the story of 'Squid Game.' He also shared with me that I shouldn't look at Gi-hun's sacrifice as just simply a sacrifice itself, but what if we could look at it as something that shows or symbolizes hope for humanity?
That was part of the many conversations between the director and me, and we thought a lot about how the audience was going to respond to Gi-hun making his choice before he finishes what he was saying. I remember, even on the day that we shot that sequence, I believe a lot was going through his mind. I think he was also considering a different version of Gi-hun finishing what he was saying. I was also thinking a lot about different versions of that, too. But I believe Director Hwang wanted the audience to finish the sentence in their own way and in their own interpretation. I believe he designed the scene and the sequence so that the end of the sentence belongs to all of the audience, and they are the ones who will finish it with their own emotions and their own journey.
Of course, it was that very last scene, that last moment of Gi-hun. I had been on a very strict diet for about 14 months leading up to that point. Especially for the last two months, I was on an extremely harsh diet compared to before we shot the series. I had lost about 10 kilograms from my regular weight. I really wanted to make sure that not only did I express Gi-hun's emotions, but I also wanted the audience to know just how completely dry and depleted he was just by looking at him. I also remember we had to shoot that last moment for a very long time. It took a lot longer than you might expect on that filming day. That was the only scene we were able to shoot, so it was extremely important and also very challenging.
Thinking about the 'Squid Game' storyline, I would like to see Gi-hun's daughter dismantle the entire system. But on a personal note, I hope she doesn't learn anything about the truth of it all. I hope she doesn't know anything about her dad. I just wish she would live a very happy and stable life with her stepdad and mom.

‘The Old Guard 2' Hits Netflix With Disastrous Rotten Tomatoes Scores
The Old Guard 2 It is not all that often that Netflix says they're going to make a sequel to one of its original films, and then actually following through, but they did so with The Old Guard 2, the sequel to the 2020 action film starring Charlize Theron. It's terrible. Terribly in ways that represent sharp declines from the first film in both critic and audience reception on Rotten Tomatoes. You can see the difference clearly: The Old Guard – 80% critic score, 71% audience score The Old Guard 2 – 25% critic score, 42% audience score Netflix or not, this is an absolutely wild drop between sequels of a series, something you rarely see in film, period. That's a full 55% drop from critics and a 29% drop from audiences, as there is not much daylight between the two, both agreeing it's terrible. The Old Guard 2 What on earth happened here? Charlize Theron is back kicking butt; the film added Uma Thurman with a sword for the first time since Kill Bill. How can you go wrong? While most of the writers are the same, the chief difference here is the director. The original Old Guard was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, while The Old Guard 2, five years later, switched to Victoria Mahoney. Prince-Bythewood was the director of the quite good The Woman King as well as Love and Basketball from way back in the day. Mahoney, instead, has only directed 1 or 2 episodes of a number of TV series, but this appears to be the first feature film she's directed since a TV movie in 2014. Not that we can for sure lay all the blame at her feet, but it's certainly a significant change. The quality of the film has not stopped The Old Guard 2 from debuting at #1 on Netflix and staying there for a few days now. Charlize Theron remains a huge star, and the return of the film has even had the original movie place on the top 10 list despite being five years old. The interest is there. Will the interest stay high? The first one did well and was well-received, but this one is a disaster, and it would be a surprise if a third film was greenlit after this, even with solid initial viewership. It is good that Netflix followed through on its sequel promise (we're still waiting for Red Notice 2 and The Gray Man 2), but this could have gone better. Way better, it seems. Latest 'Enola Holmes 3' News Includes Malta Filming Updates
Millie Bobby Brown is back in action solving cases as Enola Holmes. After two successful Netflix movies about the younger sleuth sis of Sherlock Holmes, Millie is picking back up her magnifying glass for another adventure in Enola Holmes 3. The movie series also stars Henry Cavill as Sherlock and Helena Bonham Carter as Sherlock and Enola's mother, Eudoria—and two out of these three main actors were just spotted filming the new movie together. Netflix confirmed the news in an April 2025 release, saying: Besides Millie and Louis Partridge, Helena Bonham Carter has been spotted filming the series in Malta, so we can expect the return of Enola's mom in the third movie. Notably, Sam Claflin was missing from Enola Holmes 2 in the role of Enola's brother Mycroft Holmes due to scheduling conflicts, so hopefully he would be able to return for a third movie. Enola Holmes 2 director, Harry Bradbeer, said Sam is welcome back. "Well, it was Sam's schedule that became very clear, so Sam was not going to be in it. We were very sorry that Sam couldn't be in this one. If there was a future one we would love to have him back," he told Collider. And as revealed in the credits scene of Enola Holmes 2, Himesh Patel has joined the cast as Sherlock's sidekick, Dr. John Watson, meaning he will ideally return for Enola Holmes 3 as well. Enola Holmes 3 takes place and has filmed in Malta! Millie and Helena have been spotted filming around Malta, which has hosted many other productions such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Jurassic World. The island is a fan-favorite among Hollywood stars, including Russell Crowe, who filmed Gladiator there and has returned often with his family ever since. 'You want to know what I love about Malta? Everything,' Russell Crowe said during the Golden Bee Awards at the 2025 Mediterrane Film Festival. 'I love coming to Malta and I'm grateful for your welcome every time I'm here.' Millie herself donned a "Malta" cap with her husband, Jake Bongiovi, when she posted this Instagram dump celebrating filming wrap. Enola Holmes 2 ends with the main mystery solved but contained plenty of hints of what could happen next. Moriarty is seen escaping prison, so she'll likely be returning to cause the Holmes family problems. There's also the introduction of Dr. John Watson, who could feature heavily in a third film. Though the Enola Holmes films are inspired by the novel series of the same name by Nancy Springer, they don't tend to follow the plots laid out in the novels exactly, so the books don't necessarily provide a roadmap on what's to come. Unfortunately, there is no public release date just yet. But given that filming in Malta has wrapped as of July 2025, odds are that fans won't have to wait too long! ‘Squid Game' Creator's Alternate Season 3 Ending Is Way Better
Squid Game If you didn't love Squid Game season 3 or its ending in particular, you're not alone, as in the end, it became something of a muddled mess with unsatisfying ends to many storylines, Gi-hun's included. But we could have fixed that, it seems. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains the other idea he had for how the series would end in season 3: But this is why he changed it: Not to tell the creator of the series he's wrong, but he's wrong. Gi-hun's ending was a poor finale, given that he ended up killing himself to 'save' the (computer-generated) baby when if another few minutes had passed, the entire game would have ended with the Coast Guard's invasion, and the idea that he or the baby would be killed at all would go out the window. So his sacrifice was really for nothing with the way that ending was structured. Squid Game However, that original ending would have been a much better bookend. In it Gi-hun's ending would mirror the choice he was given at the end of the first season, move on with his life and money, or seek to destroy the game. Seeing the recruiter would tell him the games were still continuing, but even still, he finally chooses his family over pursuing its destruction. That would have been way better! Season 3 ended with a rather dismal 50% audience score, the lowest of any season and a far cry from season 1's 84%. Questions still remain about whether the show will continue, as Hwang has pitched a prequel series starring Gi-hun set between seasons 1 and 2. The door is also open for another future season, and there's a lot of chatter about an American Squid Game spin-off that has yet to be confirmed.
