Riverside bats adjust to South Park ace to advance to the PIAA baseball championship

Yahoo13-06-2025
HARMONY — Back on May 23, Riverside and South Park matched up in the WPIAL 3A semifinals, with South Park junior pitcher Cooper Hochendoner having his way with the Riverside bats.
But when the two teams met again on Tuesday, June 10, in the PIAA semifinals, Riverside (20-2) made adjustments and got to Hochendoner, defeating the Eagles 4-1 to punch its second ticket to the PIAA championship game in three years.

Riverside head coach Dan Oliastro knew his team wasn't ready for Hochendoner the first time around as the hard-throwing southpaw went 9 ⅓ innings while compiling 14 strikeouts.
After putting in substantial work using a pitching machine at high velocity, the Panthers struck out only seven times to the South Park (17-8) ace while collecting six hits, with four coming from Zach Hare and Dylan Meyer.

'With the work that we put in practice on the machine, I knew what we were going to get facing him [Hochendoner] a second time around,' Hare said. 'I knew that he likes to get ahead early, so I just wanted to put a short and quick swing on the ball.'

Throughout the PIAA playoffs, Meyer has come up clutch in the bottom third of the order for Riverside, tallying five hits and four RBIs across two games.

Against South Park, he came up big again going 2-for-3 with two big insurance RBIs in the second and fourth innings.
'I just love my team to death and want it as much as they do, so I just try my best to go out there and put a good swing on the ball each time,' Meyer said.
To pair with the strong timely hitting, Riverside ace Christian Lucarelli made his second start of the PIAA playoffs after pitching a three-hit shutout against Huntingdon in the opening round.

The senior Duke signee shook off a shaky start to the game after throwing around 60 pitches in three innings.
After allowing an unearned run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, Lucarelli set down eight of the last nine batters he faced in his final three innings.

Lucarelli finished the day throwing six innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
'I felt like I was in control the whole game, so I just needed to make a slight adjustment from the first three innings,' Lucarelli said. 'I didn't feel like I was too out of the game, so I just kept repeating to myself that I was in this game and never doubted myself. To take that extra step to get after it in the final three innings pushed me through.'

Riverside will now take the familiar trip to Penn State's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to face District IV champion Mount Carmel Area at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, as it will play for its sixth PIAA baseball championship.
'I feel like a little kid again,' head coach Dan Oliastro said. 'It is so much fun to go back there again, but you want to go back there and win.'

The veteran pass rusher would last just one season in South Philly. For Huff, even that was too long. During a recent interview with 'SFNiners,' Huff revealed that he recognized the situation in Philadelphia was not going the way he had hoped. Therefore, he wanted a trade early on in the season. "If I'm being 100 percent honest with you, I wanted a trade like fairly early on," Huff revealed. "Just cause of how things went in Philly, I knew pretty early on it wasn't a fit. I knew a trade wasn't going to happen during the [2024] season. But I talked to my agent about it and was like, when it's all set and done, I might need to step to put myself in the best position... I kind of knew where it was headed fairly early on into the season." The Eagles won a Super Bowl, and Huff will get an opportunity to add a ring to his jewelry collection. Now, he's ready to move on, joining the San Francisco 49ers via trade this offseason. The veteran hopes to bounce back, after struggling to fit the scheme in Philly. Bryce Huff #0 of the Philadelphia Eagles walks off of the field after an NFL football game against the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field on November 14, 2024 in Philadelphia, Went Wrong? Before joining the Eagles, Huff was quite successful with the New York Jets. Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham pointed to the New York system at the time, explaining Huff's success early on. "It was just that defense, man," Graham said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "I know what it's like playing in that 4-3, wide-nine, go get it. Every play, it's always stop the run on the way to the quarterback. That's the slogan in that type of defense. I feel like it's all scheme. I've seen different guys flourish in different systems, and then you see him get in another system, it's different, and what they asked of this year, it just wasn't a great marriage, I would say." In four seasons with the Jets, Huff totaled 65 tackles, 17.5 sacks, and got 43 hits on the quarterback. During his final season with the Jets, Huff accounted for 29 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 21 QB hits, and 10 sacks. All were career highs. In Philadelphia, Huff played in just 12 games. He accounted for 13 tackles, four QB hits, and 2.5 sacks. He was just starting a three-year, $51 million deal. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Eagles Super Bowl Champion, 38, Diagnosed With Cancer

Eagles Super Bowl Champion, 38, Diagnosed With Cancer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles capped off the 2024 NFL season with the franchise's second Lombardi Trophy, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Advertisement The Eagles won their first Super Bowl back in the 2017 NFL season, knocking off Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. During that run, former defensive end Bryan Braman may have had the best moment of his NFL career, blocking an Atlanta Falcons punt in the Divisional Round. Now, over seven years removed from his Super Bowl win, Braman has been diagnosed with a "very rare form of cancer" at only 38 years old. A GoFundMe fundraiser called "Donate to Bryan Braman's Healing Journey" was started in light of the diagnosis, with a goal of $25,000. At the time of this article, donations exceeded $20,000. Even his former Houston Texans teammate, J.J. Watt, pitched in $10,000. Former Philadelphia Eagles free safety Malcolm Jenkins and defensive end Bryan BramanBill Streicher-Imagn Images According to his GoFundMe, Braman is back home with his family after undergoing CAR-T cell therapy in Seattle for a rare and aggressive form of cancer. While the treatment initially showed promise, the cancer has since returned and is spreading rapidly. But due to his compromised immune system and previous treatments, his chemotherapy options are now limited. Advertisement Despite this, Braman remains hopeful and is exploring potential options, including trial treatments. Recent donations have helped him afford dietary needs and treatment costs. "I would like to take this moment to thank ALL of the donors that have come forward and donated, no matter the size," the GoFundMe read. "Every dollar came in at the exact time, to cover the next expense, as they came along." Braman started his career with the Texans after going undrafted in 2011. He spent three seasons there before joining the Eagles for another three in 2014. After his first stint in Philadelphia, Braman joined the New Orleans Saints before being placed on injured reserve, getting released one week later. Brandon Graham Issues Critical Advice to Eagles After Super Bowl

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. After Brandon Graham stood at the Championship Parade podium in Philadelphia with two Vince Lombardi Trophies next to him, the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive end decided to ride off into the sunset. He called it a career and left the league as a champion. Since Graham won the Super Bowl with the Eagles the first time around, he experienced the highs and lows that came with winning. Knowing what he knows now, Graham issued some public advice for next year's Eagles team as they look to defend their status as Super Bowl Champions. "You got to have a cut off soon, make sure your workouts are still, you know you're still working out and you're not just taking meetings and taking all of these different things that take you away from ball because of what you did the year before," Graham said on the 94WIP Afternoon Show in Philadelphia. Before the 2017 NFL season, the Eagles didn't have any Super Bowls to show for in franchise history. After defeating the New England Patriots to win their first Super Bowl, Graham and the Eagles were riding a high heading into the 2018 NFL season. Brandon Graham #55 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up prior to a game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on November 05, 2023 in Philadelphia, was a lot of talk about the Eagles turning into a dynasty after dethroning Tom Brady and the Patriots. Philadelphia believed they were next. Reality ended up hitting them hard as they experienced a true Super Bowl hangover. In 2018, the Eagles achieved a record of 9-7. They made the playoffs as a Wild Card after coming second in the NFC East, and they took on a tough Chicago Bears team in the first round. The Eagles barely squeezed by the Bears, winning 16-15, thanks to the famous double-doink field goal miss by Chicago. While the Eagles nearly punched their ticket to the NFC Championship for the second season in a row, the feeling was a lot different that time around. They didn't rattle off the confidence of a dynasty. Their follow-up season, which resulted in a 9-7 performance, with a Wild Card loss, proved that major changes were needed. Fast forward to 2025, and the Eagles are back on top. Graham won't be in the building to help guide the team to a different destination this time around, but his message is important. Fortunately for the Eagles, they seem to hold a motivated mindset still, even after winning it all. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports
