Mariska Hargitay reveals shocking discovery in new documentary about her mom
The 61-year-old Emmy-winning actress, best known for her role in NBC's 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,' is making her feature film directorial debut with her new doc titled, 'My Mom Jayne.'
The film tells the legacy of Hargitay's mother, Jayne Mansfield, nearly six decades after her death.
On June 13, Hargitay was joined by her husband, Peter Hermann, and their three kids at Carnegie Hall for a special screening of the film at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
And one scene, in particular, is going viral.
In the documentary, Hargitay is talking to her brother, Zoltan, about the day they (along with their other brother, Mickey) survived a 1967 car crash that killed their mother, her then-boyfriend Sam Brody, and the driver.
The three kids, all under 8 years old, were in the backseat of the car at the time of the crash.
While recalling the accident, Zoltan remembered 'waking up in a car with a blonde-haired woman who had helped rescue the children' after the crash, according to People.
At first, Zoltan thought the woman was his mother before realizing it wasn't.
After being pulled from the wreckage, Zoltan remembers looking around and noticing that his sister, then 3-year-old Mariska, wasn't among them. When he asked where his sister was, the adults in the vehicle realized she was left at the scene, still inside the mangled car.
Hargitay was found lodged under the passenger seat with a head injury, according to People.
A 1967 New York Times article further revealed that Hargitay had 'head cuts and may require plastic surgery.' Zoltan had reportedly suffered a broken arm and cuts, while Mickey had cuts and bruises.
'Thank God Zolie woke up,' Hargitay's stepmom, Ellen, said of Zoltan in the documentary.
According to Zoltan, Mansfield was originally in the backseat with her three kids, but moved to the front seat to continue the argument she was having with Brody, People reported.
'I often think about why she didn't just stay in the backseat with us,' Zoltan wonders, per HuffPost.
'But I remember her comforting me, telling me I was going to be fine. Twenty minutes later, half an hour, I heard her scream so loud, and that was it,' he recalled.
Hargitay's new documentary premiered May 17 at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France.
It was there that Hargitay revealed that Mickey Hargitay, the only father she had ever known, wasn't her biological father. Instead, her real father was Brazilian-born Italian singer Nelson Sardelli, 90.
Hargitay said she first learned the news when she was 30 years old.
Upon meeting, Sardelli told Hargitay that he had 'been waiting 30 years for this moment.'
While Hargitay struggled with the realization that she had been 'living a lie' her entire life, the revelation didn't change who she was — or where she came from.
'I grew up where I was supposed to, and I do know that everyone made the best choice for me,' she told Vanity Fair. 'I'm Mickey Hargitay's daughter — that is not a lie.'
At the Tribeca Film Festival, Hargitay opened up about what it means to finally tell her story.
'This is my story to tell,' Mariska told People at the event. 'I had a rough time with the fact that somebody else told it before I did, and that was the impetus of the movie — that I wanted to tell my story.'
She goes on to say that her story felt 'protected' until she was ready to tell it.
'I encourage a lot of women, and men, to tell their stories,' she told People, further describing it as 'empowering' before adding that it 'gives ourselves back parts of ourselves.'
'My Mom Jayne' is scheduled to make its official premiere June 27 on HBO and Max.

Beyoncé surprises fans with Destiny's Child reunion to cap off Cowboy Carter tour
Beyoncé brought the curtain down on her 'Cowboy Carter' tour with a surprise Destiny's Child reunion at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday. The stunned crowd roared when Beyoncé emerged on stage with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams announcing, 'Destiny's Child b—!' before the trio delivered a medley of their hits including the 2001 anthem 'Bootylicious' and 2004 hit 'Lose My Breath.' They also performed a version of Beyoncé's 2022 'Energy,' along with the song's viral 'mute challenge.' It was the first time the Grammy-winning singer had performed onstage with her former bandmates Rowland and Williams since 2018, when she played Coachella. The reunion left fans ecstatic, describing the moment as 'iconic' and 'legendary.' 'Y'all will never understand how iconic this is considering they're one of the most successful girl groups of all time,' wrote one on X. It also prompted some to speculate whether a more sustained Destiny's Child recoupling might be in the future. 'If this is a sign that destiny's child will go on tour they can 3x the rent, just make it happen,' wondered another fan on X. The reunion was an electric moment in a show full of charged moments. Shaboozey, Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' collaborator, also joined her to perform their hit 'Sweet Honey Buckiin'.' Jay-Z, who made a number of appearances with his wife during her nine-city, all-stadium tour, was in Las Vegas too, where they belted out their 2003 hit 'Crazy in Love,' ending the song with a kiss. The star wattage was high off-stage as well. 'Grand opening, grand closing! Here in Las Vegas with the cowboy crew to watch Beyoncé close out her historic Cowboy Carter tour!!' shared Gayle King on Instagram with photos alongside Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian. Mike Johnson says Ghislaine Maxwell should serve 'life sentence,' opposes potential pardon
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said he believes Ghislaine Maxwell, a key associate of Jeffrey Epstein currently serving 20 years in prison for conspiring to sexually abuse minors, should face "a life sentence." "If you're asking my opinion, I think 20 years was a pittance," Johnson told NBC's Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press" July 27. "I think she should have a life sentence, at least." His remarks to NBC come as many, including supporters of President Donald Trump, clamor for testimony from Maxwell. Some followers of the case have proposed a pardon in exchange, but Trump told reporters on July 25 he hadn't considered the move. "I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I have not thought about," the president said. Epstein was charged with sexually trafficking minors and died by suicide while in detention in 2019. Maxwell, his longtime girlfriend, has been accused of recruiting minors for the disgraced financier's predation. Maxwell maintains her innocence and is appealing her 2021 sex-trafficking conviction. Johnson in his interview with NBC reiterated that pardons aren't up to him, telling the outlet, "obviously that's a decision of the president." "I won't get it in front of him," Johnson said. "That's not my lane." But, later in the interview he noted, "It's hard to put into words how evil this was, and that she orchestrated it and was a big part of it." "So, again, not my decision," he added, "but I have great pause about that, as any reasonable person would." The Trump administration for weeks has faced backlash over its handling of Epstein's case. Critics from Democratic lawmakers to prominent Republicans and slices of Trump's voter base accuse the president and other officials of not being transparent with the American people. The speaker has faced his own ongoing Epstein-related criticism, as some House Republicans have zeroed in on the Justice Department's recent review of Epstein's case and are calling for related documents to be released publicly. Democrats in Congress have piled on too. Reps. Ro Khanna, D-California, and Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, introduced a bipartisan measure to force the Trump administration's hand in releasing the federal government's files. Also on "Meet The Press," the pair split on pardoning Maxwell. "That would be up to the president," Massie said. "But if she has information that could help us, then I think she should testify. Let's get that out there. And whatever they need to do to compel that testimony, as long as it's truthful, I would be in favor of." Khanna disagreed, saying Maxwell shouldn't receive a pardon. "Look, I agree with Congressman Massie that she should testify," the California Democrat said. "But she's been indicted twice on perjury. This is why we need the files. This is why we need independent evidence." Contributing: Bart Jansen and Aysha Bagchi, USA TODAY
