4 Chinese arrested in Greece for clicking photos of Rafale jets, facilities
The Air Force Police (Aeronomia) of the 114th Combat Wing was immediately informed. They intervened, located the individuals, and brought them in for questioning. The Chinese nationals were then handed over to the local police and taken to the Tanagra police station.Initial information indicates that they were in possession of a significant amount of photographic material from the area. Authorities are currently investigating whether this was an isolated incident or part of a more systematic effort at intelligence gathering. The case is being handled with the utmost seriousness, and the evidence is already being evaluated by the appropriate security services. It is notable that India and Greece share a significant military relationship. Recently Greece has participated in multiple Air and Naval exercises with India, including Tarang Shakti last year and INIOCHOS 25 this year. The Indian Air Force has been using Rafale fighter jets in its operations, Operation Sindoor being the recent one where a lot has been talked about Rafale jets. China has been trying to undermine the performance of Rafale jets as claimed by France. The Chinese nationals who have been arrested in Greece were specifically gathering information about Rafale jets.According to a report by the Associated Press, Chinese embassies allegedly ran a coordinated disinformation campaign to discredit Rafale jets following their deployment by India during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May.Citing French military and intelligence officials, the report claims that Beijing used its foreign missions to influence existing and potential buyers of the Rafale, urging them to opt for Chinese-made alternatives instead.French intelligence sources cited by AP claim that Chinese embassy defence attachs approached officials from countries that have ordered or are considering purchasing Rafales.During these meetings, the Chinese officials allegedly argued that the Rafales used by the Indian Air Force performed poorly, while promoting Chinese-made weaponry as superior alternatives.advertisementFrench military officials said the campaign involved viral social media posts, AI-generated content, manipulated imagery portraying fake Rafale debris, and video game-style simulations to misrepresent combat scenarios.Over 1,000 new social media accounts were reportedly created as the India-Pakistan conflict intensified, pushing narratives of Chinese technological superiority.France's Defence Ministry described the effort as "a vast campaign of disinformation" aimed at promoting the superiority of Chinese-designed defence systems."The Rafale was not randomly targeted. It is a highly capable fighter jet, exported abroad and deployed in a high-visibility theatre," the ministry said on its website. The ministry further stressed that the campaign went beyond targeting a fighter jet, saying, "By attacking the aircraft, certain actors sought to undermine the credibility of France and its defence industrial and technological base. The disinformation campaign therefore did not merely target an aircraft, but more broadly a national image of strategic autonomy, industrial reliability, and solid partnerships."Dassault Aviation has sold 533 Rafale jets so far, with 323 exported to several countries, including Egypt, India, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia, and Indonesia. Indonesia alone has ordered 42 aircraft and is reportedly considering additional purchases. The Chinese Ministry of National Defence has denied allegations that it attempted to undermine the global reputation and appeal of the French Rafale fighter jet.advertisementChinese media, Global Times, in a post on X, said that the Chinese defence ministry labelled the accusations as "pure groundless rumours and slander," the ministry reiterated China's commitment to a "prudent and responsible approach to military exports," and emphasised its role in promoting "regional and global peace and stability."The Chinese defence ministry, however, refuted the claims, saying that it develops defence equipment "to ensure its own security - not to become an 'arms dealer,' nor to elevate itself by belittling others."It also criticised certain Western politicians and media outlets for interpreting events "through a lens of confrontation," adding, "This arrogance, projecting their own mind-set onto others, ultimately reveals their own insecurity."- EndsMust Watch

DRI Seizes Chinese Firecrackers Worth Rs 35 Crore In Major Crackdown, 1 Arrested
Last Updated: DRI Mumbai seized Chinese firecrackers worth Rs 35 crore in 'Operation Fire Trail.' The illegal imports were intercepted at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, and Kandla SEZ. In a massive crackdown against illegal imports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit, has seized Chinese firecrackers worth approximately Rs 35 crore. The recovery was made as a part of the operation codenamed 'Operation Fire Trail'. The crackdown led to the interception of seven containers of these crackers at Nhava Sheva Port, Mundra Port, and Kandla SEZ. The firecrackers, weighing around 100 metric tonnes, were illicitly imported under false declarations, disguised as goods like 'Mini Decorative Plants," 'Artificial Flowers," and 'Plastic Mats." The imports were routed through a KASEZ (Kandla Special Economic Zone) unit and several IEC (Importer Exporter Code) holders, with an intent to divert the consignments into the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA). A key individual, a partner in the SEZ unit, was identified as the mastermind behind the operation and has been arrested. He has been remanded to judicial custody by the court. Under India's Foreign Trade Policy, firecracker imports are classified as 'Restricted' and require license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO), as per Explosive Rules 2008. Firecrackers and fireworks contain banned and hazardous chemicals like red lead, copper oxide, and lithium. Due to their explosive nature, such consignments pose a major threat to public safety, port infrastructure, and the broader logistics network. This carefully coordinated operation reflects DRI's strong commitment to curbing smuggling activities and protecting national security. By intercepting these dangerous goods, the agency has averted risks of accidental explosions and serious disruptions to the supply chain. The DRI continues to strengthen its vigilance to dismantle illicit smuggling rackets that undermine Exim trade ecosystem. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 10:14 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. In spirit of brotherhood, a tribute to ‘Op Sindoor'
A symbol of interfaith harmony and national pride is taking shape in Meerut's Sadar Bazaar. A group of Hindu and Muslim youngsters have come together to build a grand 'kanwar' that has been named 'Operation Sindoor' to celebrate the country's military prowess and the spirit of communal unity. (HT) The initiative is being led by Gaurav, who, with 20 of his companions, is crafting the kanwar as an expression of both devotion and patriotism. It will be taken to Haridwar on July 15. The group will collect holy Ganga water on July 16 and return to Meerut. What makes this kanwar remarkable is not just its scale — 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide — but also its design, which features a statue of Bharat Mata (Mother India), a model of a Rafale fighter jet, an Army tank, and temples, showcasing India's military might and spiritual heritage. 'This is not just a kanwar, but also a glimpse of our nation's strength,' said Neeraj Dhameja, an artisan working on the project. The sentiment was echoed by Imam Shahnawaz Jamali of the local mosque, who has been actively supporting the initiative. 'We stand with our nation. The path of religion passes through humanity. Our unity against terrorism is the real strength of this country,' he said. Gaurav said the kanwar was also dedicated to the 26 innocent people killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, as well as to India's armed forces and martyrs. The brutal attack had sparked nationwide anger, and the Indian Army responded decisively, delivering a strong blow to terrorists and those supporting them across the border. 'Operation Sindoor is a symbolic tribute to those who lost their lives and to the bravery of our armed forces who defended the nation with unmatched courage,' Gaurav said. This special kanwar will be brought from Haridwar, and the Jalabhishek (ritual water offering) will be performed at the famous Augharnath Temple in Meerut.

ICEA Chairman welcomes rare earth magnet incentives, terms it 'timely' intervention
New Delhi: Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), welcomed the central government initiatives to ramp up rare earth magnets production in India, particularly the incentives the latter is earmarking for. ICEA is the apex industry body representing the entire electronics sector. "We are extremely excited, although this will make set up capacities in the longer run, but the intention is very good and I think it is very timely because the industry is facing a bit of a crisis and the supply of magnets is quite difficult to procure if we set up independent Capacity here," the ICEA Chairman told ANI. "It will be a true triumph. We are very excited about this announcement. The magnets is a core industry, and the processing of rare earths and metals is a very core industry. It's a very good development. I think this is a substantial sum of money. The scheme is well articulated. We'll go through the details and we will fully support the government in this great initiative," he added. The central government has earmarked ₹1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India, aimed at building domestic capacity when there are reports of global short supply. "Some progress is going on (on the rare earth magnet production front). We have already allocated ₹1,345 crore (for subsidy). We are on course to select the manufacturers," Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy told reporters at a press conference earlier today. Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi, accompanying the minister, said the scheme has been circulated and it is currently under inter-ministerial consultation. "We are interested only in magnets. Anybody who gives us magnets will get incentives," the top official said. It is expected that there will be at least 2 manufacturers who will participate in this program. Early this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including India. India was in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of rare earth metals -- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of ₹16,300 crore and an expected investment of ₹18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings. Recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the central government is actively encouraging private companies to mine and explore critical minerals overseas and bring them back into the country to serve the needs of the domestic industry.
