Contract limits PCB's bid to release interim coach Azhar Mahmood: Report
The source said that if Azhar is released before his contract expires, the PCB will have to compensate him with six months' salary -- a payment of approximately PKR 450 million (USD 160,000).
"Which is why the PCB recently named him as interim head coach of the national red-ball team until his contract expires next year in April-May," the insider said.
He said that, as per information, PCB is paying the all-rounder a salary of approximately PKR 7.5 million per month.
"The problem arose when Mike Hesson, the recently-appointed white-ball head coach made it clear he would have his own support staff and Azhar was not among his selections." "This left the PCB with a major problem of how to utilise Azhar's expertise to justify paying him such a handsome salary, as even if they wanted they couldn't release him without the six months of compensation," the insider added.
Azhar himself is not happy with how things are working in the board, and despite requests to be assigned with the national junior team, he has faced resistance from some insiders in the PCB.
"(Former pacer) Aaqib Javed, who is now a selector and head of the national cricket academy and close to the board chairman, is not impressed with his (Azhar's) coaching style. But to justify his contract for the time being, they have named him as interim head coach of the Test side." Azhar has been associated with the Pakistan senior squads in various coaching capacities, including assistant and bowling coach, for a number of years and was given his current contract by the previous management of the board.
The insider said the PCB had also faced financial liabilities while trying to release Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah ul Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed from their contracts as mentors of the domestic teams in the Champions Cup events, which have been cancelled after just one season.

India call up Anshul Kamboj as injury cover for Arshdeep, Akash Deep
Pacer Anshul Kamboj has been added to the India squad in England as cover for Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, who are racing against time to be ready for the fourth Test beginning here at the Old Trafford on July 23. Akash Deep, who is dealing with a groin niggle, played in the second and third Test against England at Birmingham and Lord's respectively, while left-arm pacer Arshdeep is yet to feature in a match in the on-going series. There is no clarity as yet on Akash Deep's availability, while Arshdeep is unlikely to be available for selection for the Manchester Test, and therefore the selectors decided to call Kamboj, PTI has learned. Arshdeep copped a blow on his left hand while trying to stop a shot from Sai Sudharsan on his follow through during the net session at Beckenham on Thursday, which necessitated the bandaging of his bowling arm. "We'll take a call on the combination we play, particularly given the Arshdeep situation as well, we'll make that call closer to Manchester," assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had said. He took a ball while he was bowlingit's just a cut, so we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously the medical team has taken him off to see a doctor and obviously if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches that's going to be important to our planning for the next few days, he added. The 24-year-old Kamboj is a worthy addition to the squad after his impressive effort for India A against the England Lions in two side games prior to the Test series. He took five wickets across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury while moving the ball appreciably and finding disconcerting bounce on occasions. The Haryana pacer is a hit the deck seam bowler and is being looked as a future prospect as Mukesh Kumar is already on the wrong side of 30s while Harshit Rana is yet to find his strides in red ball cricket. Kamboj shot into fame after taking all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala last year in a Ranji Trophy match at Lahli. He is only the third bowler to achieve that feat in the Ranji Trophy after Bengal's Premangsu Chatterjee (1956-57) and Rajasthan's Pradeep Somasundaram (1985-86). Overall, he took 34 wickets from six matches in the last edition of the premier domestic red-ball tournament.

Pakistan board's Mohsin Naqvi accused of trying to 'assert unnecessary pressure' on BCCI over Asia Cup
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the Asian Cricket Council, has been accused of playing politics by a BCCI source. The Indian board has also reportedly threatened to reject any resolution passed by the Asian body regarding the Asia Cup 2025 at the upcoming AGM in Dhaka. read more The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has accused Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi of trying to 'assert unnecessary pressure' on India and ghosting the board's request as the future of the Asia Cup 2025 hangs in balance. The T20 tournament is expected to take place in September and while India are the designated host, there was a feeling that it was always going to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A neutral venue agreement has been reached between the BCCI and PCB regarding India-Pakistan matches in ICC tournaments. According to the agreement, neither India nor Pakistan will travel to the other's country if one is the designated host of an ICC event. As a result, it was felt that the Asia Cup would be held in the UAE to avoid forcing teams to play at a neutral venue later on. Asia Cup future hangs in balance However, the future of the Asia Cup 2025 has been mostly unclear since the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the loss of 26 lives and India's retaliatory attacks on Pakistan through Operation Sindoor. There have also been reports in Indian media that the BCCI would boycott the Asia Cup 20925, but that was later refuted by the board secretary. The final resolution on the Asia Cup matter could be taken at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 24 July. The ACC is currently headed by PCB chairman Naqvi and the BCCI is not willing to travel to Dhaka for the AGM. The relationship between India and Bangladesh has also worsened in the last one year and the Indian cricket team's white-ball tour to Bangladesh in August 2025 was also recently postponed to September 2026. The ACC, however, is yet to get back to the BCCI regarding the request for a venue change, with only a few days left for the ACC AGM. PCB's Naqvi playing games with BCCI? Amid the whole drama, a BCCI source has said that Naqvi is trying to put BCCI under pressure by going AWOL and any resolution taken at the meeting will be rejected by the BCCI. 'Asia Cup can happen only if the meeting venue changes from Dhaka. ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi is trying to assert unnecessary pressure on India for the meeting. We requested him to change the venue, but have received no response. BCCI will boycott any resolution if Mohsin Naqvi goes ahead with the meeting in Dhaka,' a BCCI source told news agency ANI. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It will be interesting to see how things unfold from here, but it looks certain that if ACC doesn't change the location of the AGM, then we may see further delay in reaching a resolution over hosting the Asia Cup 2025.
