'I like being gross': Joey Chestnut on the pain and weird joy of hot dog eating contests
I remember when [Takeru] Kobayashi won in 2001. I was at home at my parents' house, and my little brother said, 'You could eat 50 hot dogs.' And I was like, Yeah, but I don't think I want to. I was always the biggest eater in the family. It was something I was self-conscious about. My mom would get mad at me if I ate really fast and didn't leave any for anybody else.
In college, my friends signed me up for my first contest. It was lobster. My whole life, I had been self-conscious about eating fast in front of people, and then [here] people are cheering you on. I loved every bit of it.
I started a little late this year, in mid-May. I hadn't eaten a Nathan's hot dog in more than a year, so it took me a little bit of time to get back in the saddle. The natural casing is a little more work on the jaws. For practices, I stop eating for about a day and a half — almost no solid food. I make sure I go in empty and loose. I do a bunch of burping and stretching exercises to make sure my whole core is ready. Before Nathan's, I like to do eight or nine [practices]. It gets more and more intense toward the end. Some practices take longer to recover from, especially if I'm doing it outside and it's hot.
Warm water is definitely important, but you don't want it too warm if it's hot outside. The warm water gets into the bun and helps your muscles in your throat and stomach relax. You just want to keep everything going down. But really, it's just eating. Sometimes I find myself overthinking it. There's not that many steps: Put it in my mouth, chew it, swallow it, breathe. The breathing is one thing that a lot of people forget to do. They end up holding their breath and then get winded. Some people overstuff their mouth. They just got to remember to swallow. So if I overcomplicate it [or] worry about the cups of water ... all those things help a little bit, but the real basics are breathe, eat, chew and swallow.
I go in knowing that I have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. If I feel full, I'm not really full. If I feel tired, everybody goes through it. The whole thing about competitive eating is going against these feelings. I go in knowing that three hours after the contest, I'm going to be super-bloated and miserable. It's like [how] some people like running a marathon, even though they look absolutely miserable. I could never do that. But being bloated, it's uncomfortable but I enjoy it — especially after I win and I'm sweaty. I like being gross. It's so weird. My biggest worry is if it's super-hot outside and I'm dehydrated. Then my body just is not cooperating.
Walks and sleep. Sleep is the most important. That night, I'll try to eat salad or yogurt. Then the next day, even though I'm not hungry, I'm trying to eat fiber: cucumber, simple salads, lemon water. Lots of liquid. I try to stay away from carbs or sugar. I'm usually back on the hot dog wagon in, like, four or five days.
I eat a lot of salad. I'm an iceberg and romaine lettuce person. Arugula and spring mix — you can't poke those two with your fork. I get cravings for good seafood a lot. My body digests seafood so well. Roasted radishes are really, really good. They're almost like potatoes, but they're very low-carb. [But] cooking stresses me out. I really love to eat. If it's a weekend and I've been eating clean all week, I'm due to order four entrées. I pretend like, 'Oh, we're going to try this and take it home.'
The thing about competitive eating is everybody can kind of relate to it. Everybody has a food that they love, and everybody has stories about food where they feel like they dominated it. I kind of like it when people tell me that they can eat. It's like I'm not the weirdo.
I think I'm always going to be a competitive eater. As long as my organs are working and I get my blood work done, I'm going to keep doing it. But I'll be fine when the day comes and I'm not competing on the Fourth of July. But if I'm able to, I might as well, because I love it.

Reigning Nathan's lemonade gallon chugging champ Eric 'Badlands' Booker is ready to wash away the competition this Independence Day, seeking a fifth straight championship belt in the hot dog eating contest's newest opening event. 'I'm just trying to chop my time down, take bigger and fewer gulps,' Booker, a 56-year-old dad of three who hails from Selden on Long Island, told The Post. 'It's kind of like a martial artist. They say the harder you hit, the faster you punch. … I'm pretty confident. I'm really confident,' added the man who set a world record with his 21-second chug off Stillwell Avenue last July 4. 3 Eric 'Badlands' Booker spoke with The Post ahead of the Fourth of July. Dennis A. Clark Booker, who recently retired as an MTA subway conductor, has been a core part of America's favorite eating endeavor for over a quarter century. He first qualified for the big stage at an Oceanside Nathan's in 1997 after downing 16 dogs in 12 minutes. 'I got the trophy, a spot at Coney Island, and I got a year's supply of hot dogs,' the gentle giant recalled. 'They gave me two boxes with 480 links of hot dogs. It was 60 pounds.' Good to be bad That fateful moment turned Booker into a regular ravenous competitor in the hot dog competition and other Major League Eating events — he says chicken wings are his favorite to scarf — as his lore began to grow. Fittingly, it was The Post who coined his 'Badlands' nickname in 2001 in an article surrounding the hype of then-newcomer Takeru Kobayashi and his opponents. 3 Eric 'Badlands' Booker has set numerous soda world records. Dennis A. Clark 'That's when it caught on. I felt honored. It's kind of like 'Top Gun.' They name once you really get there. So I ran with it,' said Booker, whose personal best was 40 hot dogs. Booker quickly went from stove to stardom and launched a food-themed hip-hop career during the mid-2000s with albums such as 'Hungry and Focused,' later going on to rap a recorded intro for the Nathan's contest in 2020. He also began a beverage consumption YouTube page, Badlands Chugs, in 2012, with the initial goal of chugging a two-liter Diet Coke bottle without burping. Out of all carbonated beverages, diet soda is the most belch-inducing, Booker warned. 'I remember it vividly. … I tried it, failed miserably. I had a nine-second burp that came out of that, which just went super viral,' he said. 'My son, Brandon, he filmed it with his iPhone, and my wife was upstairs, and she's just like, 'What's going on down there?!' ' Booker added of his son, fellow hip-hop producer OKHipHopOnline, with whom he collaborates. Since that fizzy fury, Badlands set numerous soda world records, glugging ocean water, pickle juice, and tons more fan-suggested concoctions while amassing almost 4 million followers. The nearly six-pound lemonade title belt, which he helped design, features a blue finish as a nod to the ocean chug, according to the champ, who has held the crown each year since its inception in 2021. That first year was just Booker vs. a timer, and his stunt was such a hit that Nathan's decided to bring in others for a full-fledged competition. 'I'm probably dehydrated by the time I get up to do the chug,' he said. 'The last couple of years, when I drank my gallon, I just felt refreshed and hydrated. I'm ready to go, you know? I didn't have to use the bathroom for at least an hour.' As the undisputed lemonade king of the world, Booker is proud to have become a household name nearly 30 years after that fateful day in a Nassau County Nathan's. 'People recognize my voice on the subway,' he said. 'Hey, you're the guy from Nathan's! You're the chug guy!' It's awesome. I'll ring the horn or something, especially if we're at the station. Bronny James, Dalton Knecht ready for second summer with Lakers

He had to endure the outsized pressure and criticism of playing last season with his superstar father, LeBron James, a season in which Bronny and his dad made history by becoming the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game. The Lakers will play three games there and then head to Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League. Dalton Knecht got some extra shots up after practice Wednesday, his stroke looking just as impressive as it did last season when he shot 37.6% from three-point range during his rookie season with the Lakers. Knecht, too, is especially looking forward to playing in Las Vegas. 'Vegas, I mean, I feel like all of us didn't care who we played [last summer],' Knecht said. 'It was just go out there and play. Our fans always show up. We go out there all the time and it's pretty much Laker fans that sell out that arena and show us so much love. We're just trying to go out there and try to put on a show no matter who we are playing.' Advertisement Lakers rookie Adou Thiero, their second-round pick (36th overall) out of Arkansas whom they acquired in a trade with the Timberwolves, is dealing with a left knee injury and will not play this summer. The Lakers said Thiero is in the final stages of his return to play and expected to be fully cleared for training camp. For James, one year of playing in the NBA has made a difference as he approaches this summer. He appeared in 27 games last season, starting once, and averaged 2.3 points per game on 31.3% shooting, 28.1% from three-point range. 'Yeah, it's definitely some more excitement than nervousness, for sure,' James said. 'I'm just ready to go out there and play and be better than I was the last time I was playing. Just having that mindset of being ready to play and ready for whatever's thrown at me, no matter the role, what I gotta do on defense, offense, everything. Being a good teammate for my new summer league team, stuff like that.' Advertisement Besides skill work, James said his plan for the summer is to be in 'elite condition' and to 'be disruptive on the defensive end.' 'So that's my main focus, probably why I'm getting a little leaner,' he said. 'But I still got 215 [pounds] on me still. So, I'm just running a lot, getting a lot of conditioning in. And then just staying on top of my diet, eating healthy, being a professional. It's just Year 2, so I gotta lock in on the things that I didn't know before my rookie year and being better and excel with that. Yeah, my main focus is this year, or this summer, has been being in elite condition. That's what I've been talking to my coaches about.' Knecht played in 78 games last season, averaging 9.1 points over 19.2 minutes per game. As the season progressed, Knecht said the game slowed down for him and that allowed him to improve. Advertisement When the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Timberwolves, Knecht said he went to work right away. In his eyes, there was no time to waste. 'Right after the [playoff] loss, I pretty much started right away. Didn't take much time off,' he said. 'So I was getting in the gym, starting at 6 a.m., going with the guys at 10 and then coming back later at night just to get as many shots as I can, just working on my game and my cuts.'
