Alcaraz subdues Fritz to reach third successive Wimbledon final
LONDON : Carlos Alcaraz reached his third successive Wimbledon final as the defending champion battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(8/6) win against American fifth seed Taylor Fritz today.
With Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio watching from the stands, Alcaraz survived a titanic clash lasting two hours and 49 minutes in searing temperatures on Centre Court.
As the mercury rose close to 32°C, play was interrupted by several fans taken ill, but Alcaraz kept his cool to subdue the big-serving Fritz with his sublime returns and immaculate serving of his own.
The 22-year-old will play seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic or world No 1 Jannik Sinner in Sunday's final.
Alcaraz has beaten Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals and holds an 8-4 edge over Sinner in their 12 meetings.
Back to his best after an inconsistent start to the tournament, the world No 2 looks in the mood to extend his reign at the All England Club.
The five-time Grand Slam champion is on a career-best 24-match winning streak since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April.
That blistering run has brought him an epic French Open final triumph against Sinner and titles in Rome, Monte Carlo and at Queen's Club.
He has won 35 of his 38 matches on grass, a golden spell including 20 successive victories at Wimbledon since losing to Sinner in the fourth round in 2022.
He is the second Spanish man to reach the Wimbledon final on three occasions, after five-time finalist Rafael Nadal.
Nerveless Alcaraz
Alcaraz is one win away from becoming the fifth man in the Open era to clinch three consecutive Wimbledon titles after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Djokovic.
He can also become the second-youngest player in the Open era to win six men's Grand Slam titles after Borg reached that mark at Wimbledon in 1978 aged 22.
Fritz fell short in his bid to reach a second Grand Slam final.
The 27-year-old, a US Open runner-up last year, made a gutsy effort, but Alcaraz had won both their previous meetings and he wasted no time seizing control again.
Although grass-court specialist Fritz had slammed 95 aces on route to his first Wimbledon semi-final, Alcaraz's returning prowess neutralised that weapon to secure a break in the first game of the match.
Alcaraz needed his eye checked midway through the set, but there was no loss of focus from the Spaniard as he held serve to take the opener.
Having dropped just four of 24 points on his serve in the first set, the Spaniard found himself under fire in the second.
Fritz pounced on a rare sloppy game from Alcaraz to take the set when the Spaniard produced an ill-timed double-fault and two costly unforced errors.
The nerveless Alcaraz was unfazed by that threat and quickly regained the momentum, running Fritz ragged with a deft drop-shot followed by a perfect lob to break in the third game of the third set.
With Alcaraz's serve virtually flawless, he added another break for good measure to secure a two sets to one lead.
In a dramatic fourth set tie-break, Fritz went from 4-1 down to 6-4 up, only for Alcaraz to save both set points.
Alcaraz scented victory and one last flurry of piercing ground-strokes secured his latest final berth.

Barca's Szczesny contract renewal leaving Ter Stegen's future in doubt
Wojciech Szczesny helped Barcelona win the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles last season. (EPA Images pic) BARCELONA : Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract until 2027, the La Liga champions said on Monday. 'The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barca, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context,' wrote the Catalan club in a statement. Szczesny had retired from football when Barcelona signed him in October to replace injured stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was ruled out for most of the season with a ruptured patella tendon. The 35-year-old impressed as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad in the final weeks of the season. Szczesny's decision to stay and Barca signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol earlier in the summer cast doubt over Ter Stegen's future at the club. The German international, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona and Spanish media report the financially struggling club would like to make savings in that regard. Barca signed Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros ($31 million) on a six-year deal in June and also still has another goalkeeper in Inaki Pena on the books.

Crystal Palace demoted to Uefa Conference League for multi-club breach
Crystal Palace are expected to appeal the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. (AFP pic) LONDON : Crystal Palace have been demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League by Uefa for a breach of multi-club ownership rules, European football's governing body confirmed on Friday. US businessman John Textor owns a stake in the Eagles and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Under Uefa multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace qualified for European competition for the first time by winning the FA Cup in May – the club's first ever major trophy. Textor has since agreed to sell his 43% stake in the London club to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. However, that deal is yet to be completed and was struck well after Uefa's deadline of March 1 for multi-club conflicts to be resolved. A decision on Palace's fate had been delayed by a separate case that initially saw Lyon relegated to the second tier of French football due to financial problems. The seven-time French champions won an appeal against that decision on Wednesday after Textor stood aside from the day-to-day running of the club. Palace are expected to appeal the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Parish told Sky Sports: 'We are obviously devastated, most importantly for the supporters. Supporters of all clubs should be devastated for it. 'It is a bad day for football,' Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish declared. 'Most right-minded football fans will see what a terrible injustice this is for the football club and one that I hope someone can remedy because I do believe that nobody in football wants to see this – I don't think Uefa want to see it,' he told Sky Sports. Nottingham Forest, who had qualified for the Conference League by finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, will replace Palace in the Europa League, a Uefa source told AFP.

Bilbao's Alvarez provisionally suspended after failed doping test
Yeray Alvarez came through Bilbao's youth academy and has made 257 appearances for the team. (EPA Images pic) BILBAO : Athletic Bilbao's Yeray Alvarez has been provisionally suspended due to a failed doping test after a Europa League game against Manchester United, with the defender saying he unintentionally ingested a banned substance in medicine used to treat hair loss. Alvarez said he had tested positive after Bilbao's 3-0 home defeat in the semi-finals of Uefa's second-tier club competition in May. The Spanish side also lost the return leg 4-1. The 30-year-old centreback was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2016 and said he had been taking the medicine as part of his treatment for alopecia. 'After studying the case, we have established that I tested positive because I unintentionally took a hair loss prevention medicine containing a banned substance,' Alvarez said in a social media post yesterday. 'The disciplinary procedure is currently under investigation and subject to confidentiality, so I am provisionally suspended and am not authorised to make any further public statements. 'I would like to say to all of you that I very much regret this situation but, with the support of the club, I am working on my defence in the belief that I will be able to return to the field of play as soon as possible.' Uefa said they would not comment on the case until a final disciplinary decision had been made. Bilbao threw their full support behind Alvarez, who came through the club's youth academy and has made 257 appearances in all competitions for the senior team.
