ICONIC: Springboks' 1995 national anthem featuring Madiba!
The first democratic president made a special appearance at the historic event, which the Boks won for the first time on home soil as the host country.
It also marked the dawn of democracy and the unification of South Africans through sport.
Thirty years ago, South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup final between New Zealand and the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The national anthem was sung by choral group, Imilonji Kantu Choral Society. The World In Union – a fitting song selection given the context – was performed next by PJ Powers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The emotional and historic game featured legendary players who have since passed, such as Joost van der Westhuizen, James Small, and Chester Williams.
It also starred Nelson Mandela, who brought his infectious Madiba Magic to the stadium. The Springboks ultimately won 15-12 against the All Blacks.
Following the inception of democracy in 1994, the first black president, Nelson Mandela, urged South Africans to mend racial divides and support the Springboks. The move would see him being criticised by militant groups for trying to promote a 'fake unity.'
Nevertheless, Mandela would tell the public of the Boks: 'The country is fully behind them. I have never been so proud of our boys as I am now. I hope that that pride we all share.'
A year later, SA – who were once shunned by the world over Apartheid atrocities – not only hosted the Rugby World Cup but won it too.
Iconic images of the late, proud president – donning green and gold – lifting the Webb Ellis trophy alongside Springbok captain Francois Pienaar made headlines around the world. The historical scenes were credited as the moment South Africans of all races formed a bond through sport and support for, ultimately, the Springboks.

Springboks: One more injury worry!
The Springboks picked up an expected win over Italy at Loftus, but Rassie Erasmus has already said he will reconsider his selections for the second Test because of the unconvincing performance, and to handle the challenge posed by a young and hungry Azzurri. 'Internally we've announced that 13, 14 players that will definitely get a run next week, and that we'd build the bench or starting line-up around those guys,' he said. 'We won't discard those guys but some of them might move to the bench, some of the real standout players who played today might start again.' As Erasmus reconsiders his selections, there is also an injury to Damian de Allende that will need to be factored in after he strained his hamstring, with the full severity of the injury still to be determined. 'We have to pick nine guys to go with the others and we have to decide whether they start or come off the bench. Damian De Allende has a bit of a hamstring but luckily, we don't have any (major) injuries, just a few bruised egos.' Damian de Allende (hamstring): The latest player to be added to the Springboks' injury list, it remains to be seen what scans may reveal about the severity of this. Pieter-Steph du Toit (shoulder): Du Toit has made a good recovery and should be ready for the second Test against Italy, or the one-off clash against Georgia. Cameron Hanekom (hamstring): The talented loose forward has undergone surgery, and is only likely to be available at the back-end of the Rugby Championship, or for the end-of-year tour. Juarno Augustus (back): The powerful loose forward, who is set to join Ulster next season, has been unable to join up with the Springboks as expected due to an unfortunate injury issue that will also see him miss the July Tests. Gerhard Steenekamp (knee): The 28-year-old hasn't featured since early March when he suffered a knee injury that led to some unfortunate complications following a minor procedure. It's hoped that he will be ready for the Rugby Championship. Ntuthuko Mchunu (knee): Another prop who will be out for some time, with the Springboks only expected to be able to consider calling on his services at some point during the Rugby Championship. Frans Malherbe (back): He is set to be rested for the July internationals, but the big prop should hopefully be available at some point in the Rugby Championship. Lukhanyo Am (knee): There will be some concern over the fact that the outside centre has been released as a result of a troublesome knee injury, and although his recovery timeline has not been specified, it's expected that he will only come back into contention for the Rugby Championship. Elrigh Louw (leg): He has unfortunately been ruled out for the entire 2025 season. Ben-Jason Dixon (wrist): The loose forward will miss the July internationals, but could be back in contention during the Rugby Championship. Deon Fourie (ankle): The veteran utility forward should be back in training before the Rugby Championship. Faf praises Krappie after man-of-the-match display for Boks: ‘He's showing his quality'

Picture: Johan Orton/Gallo Images Veteran Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk praised his younger positional counterpart Morné van den Berg after he earned 'man-of-the-match' in just his third official Test for the Springboks. The 27-year-old Lions star, known as 'Krappie' to his friends, started in the Springboks' 42–24 win over Italy at Loftus on Saturday, with De Klerk replacing him from the bench in the 54th minute. Van den Berg lost the ball forward a couple of times early on, but more than made up for this as the game went on. He kicked well, fed quickly and tackled well. More importantly, he scored two first-half tries, one coming from the back of a driving scrum that went over the try line, the other coming from a beautiful pick-up and dash between defenders, also from out of a scrum. In a match the Springboks were expected to dominate (and players expressed their own frustration afterwards), his performance was one of the few silver linings for the hosts ahead of their second and final Test against the Italians at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday. 'What a privilege' Van den Berg said it was special to score two tries in a winning cause. 'I'm glad we could do it,' he said. 'It's my first time playing here for the Boks. It's something unbelievable, difficult to put into words.' 'The first try, I was just making sure the ball was staying in (the scrum), when it popped out we were basically over the try line. The second try, basically, the ref said use it. We always back our scrum, so I keep the ball in until the ref says use it.' He said playing behind a dominant pack made his job easy. 'They are unbelievable. Those boys do their work. It's a massive privilege to be right there. I've got the best view in the house for that. What a privilege.' Faf commends Van den Berg's willingness to grow Noting the younger scrumhalf's performance, 33-year-old De Klerk called Van den Berg a 'fantastic player'. 'I'm really glad he is taking his opportunity,' the 59-capped double World Cup winner said. 'He's doing really well for the Lions and showing his quality now. I think he's a great guy. He wants to learn as much as he can. It's always awesome to have that guy in the squad.'

The Azzurri lost the Test match at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria 42-24 but received plaudits for a gritty second-half performance against the world champions, having pulled within 11 points with 10 minutes to play. I have a huge number of reasons to be proud of them,' Quesada said, during his post-match media conference. 'It was a really tough week for the team with a lot of injuries, a lot of changes, and a lot of things we couldn't control that didn't go our way. But the team never lost focus.' Italy's touring squad is a young one, with several senior players rested following the Six Nations. Quesada admitted that the lack of international experience showed early on. 'In the first half, we made some mistakes because we struggled — we had so many guys with less experience playing against this Springbok squad at home. In the second half, we released a bit of pressure and it was better,' he said. 'With the ball, I think we didn't believe enough in ourselves. We didn't try enough or respect the things we had prepared. So we worked on building belief in the players, helping them realise they could do much better and match that intensity.' He added that they had also emphasised improved defensive discipline, after conceding easy penalties in the first half that gave the Boks entry into the 22. Captain Niccolò Cannone, the experienced second-rower, was praised for leading the second-half turnaround. Italy had trailed 28-3 at the break. Cannone was among the try-scorers for the visitors, alongside Manuel Zuliani and Pablo Dimcheff. 'A lot of the credit goes to the captain and the leaders for the incredible way they handled the second half. We had our 'Grenade Squad' that did pretty well,' Quesada said with a laugh. 'The team that started the second half did well. The bench all brought something, even though for some of them it was their first match for the national team. The key thing was discipline and believing a little bit more in ourselves.' The Springboks struggled in the lineouts, and the Azzurri also enjoyed success at the breakdown. Quesada was asked whether this had been a specific target going into the match. 'We knew we needed to take as much space and time away from them as we could. It was their first Test of the year, so with a bit of luck, we thought that if we disrupted their rhythm, they might not be as fluid as they usually are. 'We're a team that normally has less possession than the opposition, so we are more used to defending. We have excellent jackals in the squad, and it's something we work on regardless of the opponent,' he revealed. 'It was all about effort and commitment. We talk a lot about that. "(Sunday), we had 17 players who usually start that were not here. So, it was important to be brave and confident in each other — to commit to a big defensive game. I'm so proud of the team.' The Azzurri mentor now braces for a Springbok backlash in next weekend's second Test in Gqeberha.
