New Political Alliance ‘People's Alliance For Change' Emerges In Jammu And Kashmir

India.com3 days ago
A new political alliance called the People's Alliance for Change (PAC) was announced in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.
The alliance comprises Sajjad Lone-led Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC), Justice and Development Front (JDF) backed by former members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, and Hakeem Yasin-led People's Democratic Front (PDF).
The PAC was formally announced during a press conference in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday.
JDF Chairman Shamim Ahmad Thokar, along with JKPC leader Sajjad Lone, announced the formation of the alliance, stressing on unity to address the political and developmental concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. PDF Chairman Hakeem Mohammad Yasin was also present at the announcement of the alliance.
The alliance partners have named it the People's Alliance for Change (PAC), whose stated mission is to bring transformational change to the region, focusing on the welfare of its people who have faced significant challenges. The PAC brings together three primary political entities, each with distinct backgrounds and regional influences.
The Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC) is led by Sajad Lone, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference. The JKPC has historical roots in separatism but has moved towards mainstream politics in recent years by allying with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It won two seats in the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election and one seat in the 2024 elections. The party was also part of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) from 2020 to 2021.
Sajad Lone emphasized the alliance's commitment to alleviate the suffering of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, building on the legacy of his father's relationship with Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Justice and Development Front (JDF) is led by former Jamaat-e-Islami member Shamim Ahmed Thokar. The JDF was launched in March 2025 by former members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, marking the group's return to electoral politics after decades of boycotting elections. The JDF aims to contest the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections, with a focus on grassroots issues such as education, health and social reform. The inclusion of the JDF in the PAC is notable, as the Jamaat-e-Islami was banned by the Indian government in 2019 for alleged anti-national activities. The formation and participation of the JDF in the alliance signals a strategic shift towards engaging in democratic processes.
Emphasizing that 'unity is essential to effectively serve the people,' Thokar highlighted JDF's commitment to collaborative politics for regional development.
The People's Democratic Front (PDF) is led by Hakeem Yasin, a veteran politician from Jammu and Kashmir. The PDF is a small regional party with a focus on local governance and development issues. Hakeem Yasin has been a consistent political figure in the region, often aligning with various alliances to expand his party's influence. The inclusion of the PDF has strengthened the alliance's regional reach, especially in Budgam areas where Yasin has good influence.
The PAC said the alliance aims to tackle the 'immense suffering' of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on political, social, and developmental issues. 'We will provide a coherent platform to address the concerns of the region, ensuring a coherent political message,' he said. He said the alliance is a movement for transformational change, challenging the status quo and existing power structures in Jammu and Kashmir.
The formation of the PAC is aligned with the preparations for the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections, indicating a focus on strengthening influence at the local level. This alliance is a new challenge for the NC, PDP, and BJP. Its formation can also challenge the NC-Congress alliance and will provide an alternative to voters disillusioned with traditional parties.
The alliance will face tough competition from the NC-Congress alliance, BJP and PDP. The success of the PAC will depend on its ability to maintain unity, articulate a clear agenda and push the central government's oversight over Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory.
Jammu Kashmir has previously seen an alliance that was formed in 2020 after the abrogation of Article 370, named the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), it was formed to fight for the restoration of Article 370 but it disintegrated in 2024 due to internal rifts, especially between the JKPC and then the NC and the PDP. The break-up of the PAGD highlights the difficulty of sustaining alliances in Jammu and Kashmir. The PAC will need to resolve trust issues among its members to avoid a similar fate.

Stop harassment of Bengal workers in your state, CS Pant writes to Odisha

Kolkata: Indicating a growing frustration with Bengali-speaking migrant workers being illegally detained in Odisha as Bangladeshis, Bengal chief secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday wrote to his Odisha counterpart, Manoj Ahuja, to put an end to this "continuing harassment faced by people from West Bengal" in the neighbouring state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Samirul Islam, chairman of West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board and Trinamool's RS MP, threatened to move Calcutta High Court on the issue. "Thousands of people from Odisha live and work peacefully in Bengal. Not once has Bengal govt treated them with even a fraction of the hostility that Odisha is showing now," he said. Pant, in his letter, wrote: "We are receiving disturbing reports of such individuals being detained without due legal process in regions around Paradip and across coastal districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Balasore and Cuttack. What is even more concerning is that even when these persons produce valid identity documents — including Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter IDs, electricity bills and PDS documents — their claims are being dismissed. In many instances, they are being asked to produce ancestral land records dating back several generations, an unreasonable and unjustifiable demand for migrant workers." Pant also mentioned how, "alarmingly, there have also been instances where, despite verification reports from competent authorities in West Bengal confirming the identity and citizenship of the individuals, there has been no positive action or relief". "I appeal to you to take a humanitarian view of the matter and ensure that these individuals, who are Indian citizens, are not subjected to arbitrary detention or harassment based on linguistic or regional identity," he wrote. "It is deeply distressing to learn that many of them are being targeted solely because they speak Bengali — their mother tongue — and are being unjustly labelled as Bangladeshi infiltrators. This sweeping generalisation is not only unfair and discriminatory, but also deeply hurtful to citizens who have every right to dignity and protection under the law," Pant added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Islam, who has been vocal on the issue, said: "The Odisha authorities refused to accept any identity document like Aadhaar and EPIC, and demanded verification from Bengal govt. We promptly provided the required details — verified and furnished by none other than DMs and SPs. But even that failed to satisfy them. Next, they asked for the electoral roll where names of these individuals were listed. Once again, the Bengal administration complied and sent the relevant documents. " The MP said: "Our CM Mamata Banerjee believes in diversity and strives to maintain harmony in every sense. So, I sincerely urge the Odisha govt and BJP: do not play with fire. If you ignite the politics of hatred, you may end up being consumed by your own flames."

Govt clears acquisition proposals for military goods worth ₹1.05 lakh crore

The Ministry of Defence's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday, 3 July 2025, cleared capital acquisition proposals worth nearly ₹ 1.05 lakh crore as the nation's military seeks to onboard new defence equipment. As per the official release, the 10 capital acquisition proposals are set to be carried out through indigenous sourcing from Indian companies. 'Defence Acquisition Council, under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, on July 03, 2025, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 10 capital acquisition proposals amounting to approx. ₹ 1.05 lakh crore through indigenous sourcing,' said the Ministry of Defence in its official statement. The Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) or the need for these proposals is for defence equipment like the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, an Electronic Warfare System, an Integrated Common Inventory Management System for the Tri-Services, and Surface-to-Air Missiles. 'These procurements will provide higher mobility, effective air defence, better supply chain management and augment the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces,' said the Ministry of Defence in the official statement. The Defence Ministry also cleared the AoNs for the procurement of Moored Mines, Mine Counter Measure Vessels, Super Rapid Gun Mount and Submersible Autonomous Vessels, as the government seeks to mitigate the potential risks posed to the Naval and Merchant Vessels of India. 'To provide further impetus to indigenous design and development, AoNs were accorded under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category,' said the ministry. The Ministry of Defence in June 2025 was planning to review a ₹ 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QR-SAM) system for the Indian Army, according to Mint's earlier report. On 28 March 2025, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the biggest-ever deal to buy 156 Light Combat Helicopters worth over ₹ 62,000 crore for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.
