KUCHING (May 19): Sarawakians are proving they have what it takes to compete on the global stage especially in high-tech sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and engineering.
One Sarawakian scientist is now leading a groundbreaking project in the United Kingdom to develop an AI-powered semiconductor chip capable of solving energy issues in under 10 seconds — a feat that has drawn praise even from the British government, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the young scientist is currently based at a government-owned laboratory in Cardiff, Wales, UK.
'I have personally visited this laboratory, and the British government is impressed by the abilities of our Sarawakian.
'Not only did this young scientist create an AI-powered chip, but this chip can also be used to generate energy,' he said during his speech at the Sarawak-level Workers' Day celebration at the Hikmah Exchange Convention Centre here yesterday.
The Premier said the scientist's achievement is a powerful example of what Sarawakians can achieve when given access to proper training and opportunities.
'I have informed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about this and told him that as soon as our international intellectual property rights are secured, we want this innovation to be launched.
'I told him that this is something we want to launch because it is the creation of our own homegrown talent,' he said.
He also said that this achievement is in line with Sarawak's vision to become a high-income and technology-driven state, echoing the development path of several Nordic nations where high productivity is matched by efficient use of advanced technologies.
'We don't want an economy that incurs high costs but delivers low output.
'If technology can bring savings through efficiency and boost productivity, then offering higher salaries will not be a problem,' he said.
On a related matter, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government has always taken a cautious and meticulous approach when implementing or amending laws, including the Sarawak Labour Ordinance.
'In accordance with international labour standards under the International Labour Organisation (ILO), we have harmonised the Employment Act 1955 with the Sarawak Labour Ordinance.
'We need to examine the legal details thoroughly because we must ensure that Sarawak's interests are not compromised. The Sarawak Labour Ordinance is part of MA63 so we must be vigilant in safeguarding the rights of Sarawakian workers under our own labour ordinance,' he said.
He pointed out that if the state were to simply hand everything over, it could lead to the erosion of Sarawak's rights.
'That is why we in the government are cautious so that our rights are protected.
'I do not want a situation where one day people are saying that Abang Jo just gave it all away,' he said.
After more than 20 years, the amended Sarawak Labour Ordinance finally came into force on May 1, allowing workers in Sarawak to have access to the same benefits as their counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia.
Among the key changes in force include a seven-day paternity leave for male employees, an extension of maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, maximum weekly working hours reduced from 48 to 45 hours to ensure the better wellbeing and productivity of employees as well as enabling contract workers to benefit from stronger protections including fairer contract periods and access to employment benefits equivalent to permanent employees. Telang Usan rep urges rural students to embrace higher education opportunities

Yap (third left) officiates the Tegas Project of Dream Realised (Pro-DR) roadshow 2025 on behalf of Dennis at SMK Long Lama, Baram yesterday as others look on. MIRI (July 29): Rural students are urged to seize the opportunity to further their studies to higher levels, taking advantage of various financial assistance schemes and other educational initiatives provided by the Sarawak government for a brighter future, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau. He said the Sarawak government has, over the years, taken proactive measures in the education sector to ensure that all Sarawakians, including those in rural areas, have access to quality education and the chance to improve their standard of living. 'Among the steps taken are through the state government's scholarship and financial aid programmes, which include various forms of scholarships, education loans and financial assistance such as the Yayasan Sarawak Scholarships, Yayasan Sarawak Study Loans and the Sarawak Tertiary Education Loan (STEL),' he said in his speech at the for Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) Project of Dream Realised (Pro-DR) roadshow 2025 held at SMK Long Lama, Baram yesterday. His speech was delivered by his representative, Penghulu Desmond Yap. He further noted that the establishment of the Yayasan Sarawak International Schools is also a commendable initiative as it provides opportunities for high-achieving students from low- and middle-income families to access international-standard education either for free or at subsidised rates. Dennis, who also sits on the board of trustees for Tegas said the state government is equally attentive to the welfare of students in rural areas by working closely with the federal government to upgrade dilapidated schools and enhance educational facilities in the interior. 'These measures clearly reflect the Sarawak government's strong commitment to empowering its people through education, with the aim of nurturing competitive human capital prepared to face future challenges,' he added. On the outreach roadshow, Dennis said that the roadshow programme is a travelling education and career carnival organised by the Sarawak government through Tegas, with the support of the state Education Department. 'This edition of the roadshow features the participation of more than 30 institutions of higher learning and training, government agencies, and organisations offering financial assistance,' he said. He added that the main objective of the roadshow is to help rural students pursue their dream careers through education, regardless of their academic qualifications. 'Aside from the education fair and information booths on financial assistance, there are also side activities such as talks, exhibitions and interactive sessions aimed at raising awareness on digital innovation opportunities in TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), within the context of the digital economy,' he said. He called on all students, especially those in rural areas, to make full use of the opportunity to visit the booths and gather information about study opportunities, available courses and financial aid options. At the same function, Dennis also announced an allocation of RM15,000 for the establishment of a Tegas Think & Thinker (T&T) mini lab at SMK Long Lama. 'This is part of our efforts to improve the quality of education for students in the area, ensuring they are not left behind in terms of technological knowledge and that they have the opportunity to explore their talents in the field of innovation,' he said. Among those present were Telang Usan district officer Ezra Uda, SMK Long Lama's senior assistant (administration) Ting Shiau Kiong, Tegas Community Innovative Learning senior manager Fredrick Kevin Buseli and SMK Long Lama Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Geoffrey Lejau Lucas.

Trump criticises London mayor Khan again during UK visit

TURNBERRY: US President Donald Trump once again targeted London Mayor Sadiq Khan during a press conference in Scotland, where he appeared alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. When asked if he planned to visit London in September, Trump confirmed his intention but took the opportunity to criticise Khan. 'I'm not a fan of your mayor. I think he's done a terrible job,' Trump said. 'The Mayor of London... a nasty person.' Starmer, standing beside Trump, quickly interjected, 'He's a friend of mine, actually.' However, Trump doubled down, stating, 'I think he's done a terrible job. But I would certainly visit London.' The tension between Trump and Khan is long-standing. Khan, a Labour Party member like Starmer, has been a vocal critic of Trump. In January, ahead of Trump's return to the White House, Khan warned of the dangers posed by 'reactionary populists' in an article. Their feud dates back to Trump's first term when Khan criticised the US travel ban on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries. Trump retaliated by calling Khan a 'stone cold loser' and accusing him of mishandling terrorism. In a podcast recorded before Trump's 2024 re-election, Khan suggested that Trump's hostility was racially motivated. 'He's come for me because of, let's be frank, my ethnicity and my religion,' Khan said. Despite their differences, Khan acknowledged the democratic process after Trump's victory, telling AFP in December that the American people had 'spoken loudly and clearly.' Responding to Trump's latest remarks, a spokesperson for Khan said the mayor was 'delighted that President Trump wants to come to the greatest city in the world,' adding that Trump would see how London's diversity strengthens the city. - AFP

Germany and Jordan to airlift Gaza aid amid hunger crisis

BERLIN: Germany will collaborate with Jordan to airlift humanitarian aid to Gaza, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Monday. The move follows Israel's pledge to open secure aid routes as international concerns grow over hunger in the besieged Palestinian territory. 'Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will coordinate this very closely with France and the United Kingdom, which are also prepared to conduct such an airlift for food and medical supplies,' Merz said during a press conference in Berlin. He acknowledged the limitations of the effort, stating, 'We know that this can only be a very small help for the people in Gaza, but nevertheless it is a contribution that we will gladly make.' Merz is set to meet Jordan's King Abdullah II in Berlin on Tuesday to further discuss the initiative. Despite being a strong supporter of Israel's military campaign against Hamas, Merz urged Israel to 'immediately improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza in a comprehensive and sustainable manner.' Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed Middle East peace plans with US President Donald Trump during the latter's visit to Scotland. Starmer's office stated that the plan builds 'on the collaboration to date that paves the way to a long-term solution on security in the region.' A cabinet meeting is expected this week to address the crisis. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will travel to the Middle East on Thursday to push for ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel. The humanitarian situation has worsened, with aid groups warning of 'mass starvation' after 21 months of conflict. Israel recently announced a daily 'tactical pause' in fighting to allow aid deliveries. While truckloads of food reached Gaza on Monday, agencies stressed that far more assistance is needed to prevent famine. - AFP
