Anwar's big surprise? Malaysians sceptical over ‘tribute' teaser post
Anwar Ibrahim has become the latest lightning rod for
Malaysia 's restless public, whose patience is wearing thin after months of new taxes, political scandals and economic anxiety.
Late on Monday, Anwar posted a stylised silhouette and the words Akan Datang (Coming Soon) across his social media accounts, promising a special gesture of 'extraordinary' appreciation for all Malaysians.
The post, which was met with widespread derision, appeared just hours after nearly 1,000 lawyers had
marched to the prime minister's office in Putrajaya, protesting alleged government meddling in judicial appointments.
Malaysia's digital town square fired back with its trademark blend of wit and scepticism. Comments flooded in, many laced with biting humour about the government's recent
expansion of taxes on goods and services , which came into force on July 1.

More Hong Kong office tenants seek longer rent-free periods from landlords: Colliers survey
Some nine out of 10 office tenants in Hong Kong are expecting longer rent-free periods from their landlords as more than a quarter of the city's companies intend to shrink their real-estate footprint over the next 12 months, according to a survey from Colliers. Advertisement The ratio was the highest since the property consultancy relaunched the annual survey in 2023. Last year, eight out of 10 respondents were seeking such concessions, according to data from the survey, which was released on Wednesday. 'Nowadays, landlords would be comfortable extending three to six months rent-free; that is pretty much standard,' said Chris Hui, Colliers' head of landlord representation for office services. 'Anything longer than that will obviously be subject to a lot of other factors, like how long is the lease and how large is the space.' In rare cases, tenants could seek as much as 10 months rent-free, he added. The survey also showed that an increasing number of office tenants – rising to 46 per cent this year from 25 per cent in 2024 – were looking at reducing their building management fees, which are charged on a monthly basis. Management fees cover various services including lift inspections, air conditioning maintenance and janitorial services. Advertisement As office rents have fallen from a 2019 peak, tenants have sought lower management fees to ease their costs, the study showed. But Kathy Lee, head of the research and retail consultancy at Colliers, said landlords were not likely to budge. 'It's very difficult for landlords to give discounts on management fees because the management fee is always on a cost basis,' she said. 'They need a certain amount of staff to provide services, so there is not much room for them to lower the management fee.'

Nvidia, AMD expected to win market share in China as US eases export curbs
The sales resumption of Nvidia 's H20 processors and Advanced Micro Devices ' (AMD) MI308 chips in China is expected to ease the anxiety of local artificial intelligence companies, according to analysts. Advertisement Speaking at the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing on Wednesday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he hoped to introduce more advanced chips to China. The H20, designed to comply with US trade curbs, is less powerful than the H200. Under current US rules, most advanced Nvidia chips, including the A800 and H800, remain restricted from sale to China – one of the company's largest markets. Huang's comments followed Nvidia's announcement that it would soon resume exports of its H20 chips to China, while the US has also approved AMD to sell its rival made-for-China product MI308. The US government had 'assured Nvidia that licences will be granted' for exporting the H20 processors, the chipmaker said on Tuesday. During the absence of H20 and other advanced Nvidia chips in China, Huawei Technologies has been pushing for domestic firms to adopt its alternative products. Advertisement Huang said on Wednesday that the Chinese giant was 'a really incredible technology company' and that anyone who belittled the company and China's manufacturing capability was 'deeply naive', according to local media outlet Yicai.

Sales of villas, luxury homes rise to 3-year high in Hong Kong on demand by wealthy buyers
Sales of villas, bungalows and luxury homes in Hong Kong soared to a three-year high in the first six months of this year, as an influx of wealthy immigrants fuelled the hunt for bargains on the top end of one of Asia's priciest residential property markets. Advertisement There were 286 registered transactions of villas in the first half, a jump of 23.3 per cent from the same period last year, according to data provided by Centaline Property, one of the largest real estate agencies in the city. The sales value of the property fell 15.3 per cent to HK$12.34 billion over the same period, due to a 'significant decline' in the sales of primary homes valued at more than HK$500 million, the data showed. The rising volume reflected the 'improved sentiment in both the property and stock markets', and was supported by the start of an interest rate reduction cycle and the city government's relaxation of investment immigration rules, said Centaline's senior associate director Yeung Ming-yee. Advertisement 'Developers delayed the launch of new luxury projects over the past three years, leading to insufficient supply that kept primary-market transactions at a relatively low level of around 30 deals,' said Yeung. She added that the primary market's total transaction value of HK$4.4 billion was 48.1 per cent lower compared to the same period last year.
