Watch bacteria ‘hitchhike' and zoom around

The tiny world of microorganisms is full of microbes competing in a major life or death battle. The tiny lifeforms compete for turf, gobble up some pollutants, spew chemicals at their foes, and will exploit terrain in order to get an edge and thrive. New research into this microscopic turf war found that bacteria can speed up by using fluid pockets that are shaped by nearby yeast cells. Hitching a ride with these moisture trails allows the bacteria to spread faster and swim further. The findings are detailed in a study published June 4 in the Cell Press journal Biophysical Journal and reveal a new way that microbes travel through plants, soil, and even our own bodies.
'When studying microbial interactions, research often focuses on the chemical nature of these interactions,' study co-author and Cornell University microbiome engineer Divakar Badal said in a statement. 'But we learned that physical properties also play an important role in how microbes grow and spread.'
In the study, the team focused on the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. P. aeruginosa is a rod-shaped bacteria found in soil and human airways and has tail-like propellers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can cause infections in the blood, lungs (pneumonia), urinary tract, or other parts of the body after surgery.
C. neoformans is a stationary yeast that can be deadly in those with weakened immune systems and lives throughout the world. Infections from this fungus can affect the different parts of the body, but causes lung or brain infections (cryptococcal meningitis) most often.
The team watched under a microscope as the two species closed in on each other. The P. aeruginosa bacterium eventually swarmed into the puddle-like fluid surrounding the C. neoformans yeast. The bacteria cultured with yeast spread up to 14.5 times faster than when it was cultured alone. Additionally, isolated bacterial colonies quickly connected into continuous clumps.
At a microscopic scale, P. aeruginosa is comparable to a grain of rice. On that same scale, the yeast is about the size of a grape. These larger yeast bodies draw in moisture from the surface, which forms a thin halo of fluid that acts as a temporary swimming lane. This lane allows the bacteria to bypass the usual physical limits of a dry surface. When the team replaced the live yeast with dead ones or glass beads, the same halo effect was produced, indicating that the puddles were driving it.
'The bigger the obstacle, yeast and glass beads alike, the more fluid you have around it, and it's better for Pseudomonas,' added Varsha Singh, a study co-author and molecular biologist at the University of Dundee in Scotland. 'So, it's leveraging what could have been an obstacle to move farther ahead.'

The team also found that the spread of the bacteria ebbs and flows within the landscape that the growing yeast cells create. They built a model to simulate the interactions between both the bacterium and yeast to better understand the dynamics at play. The model indicates that faster-growing yeast species like C. albicans altered the fluid landscape more dramatically, affecting just how quickly bacteria could travel.
'I was absolutely blown away by how well our model predictions match the experimental results,' said Danny Raj M, a study co-author and engineer at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. 'In a sense, the model is a virtual lab that simulates real behaviors. By changing the parameters, from growth rates to humidity, we can answer a number of questions.'
According to the team, the implications of this research go beyond the model and lab. Bacteria and yeast coexist in plants, soil, water, and the human body. The ability to ride fluid films may be one of the factors that helps bacteria colonize these environments more effectively, especially if moisture is scarce. The team plans to examine the way that both species interact in the real world to learn more.
'We tend to think of microbiology in an anthropomorphic way, focused on human lungs or the gut because we can relate to them,' said Singh. 'But much of it plays out in the soil and other environments. That gives us a wonderful opportunity to explore new questions. I think that's where the next frontier is.'

A scientific review of two decades of information found a dramatic uptick in feline infections of the avian flu in recent years. Scientists at the University of Maryland conducted a systematic review of scientific literature from 2004 to 2024 to assess the epidemiology and global distribution of avian flu in cats. They found what they described as a "drastic flux" in infections among domestic cats in 2023 and 2024 after the emergence of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b — a specific genetic lineage of highly pathogenic avian influenza that emerged around 2020 — in other mammals. They also discovered an uptick in the number of ways that cats were being infected with the illness, according to the University of Minnesota, which summarized the findings. Around 63% of the cases involved domestic cats — they also studied other feline species, including tigers — and most infections were confirmed or suspected to be the result of bird-to-cat transmission, most often from eating dead pigeons, chickens, or other birds. Cats were most commonly infected at zoos, animal shelters, and farms or on private rural land. Cats infected with the avian flu often develop a fever, lose their appetite, and suffer lethargy early on, according to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Symptoms can worsen rapidly and include nasal and ocular discharge, sneezing, coughing, respiratory difficulty, and neurologic signs such as incoordination, tremors, seizures, and blindness. But the scientists are also worried about the implications of an uptick in feline bird flu for people. "Infections among mammalian species in frequent contact with humans should be closely monitored," the researchers stated, per the University of Minnesota. "Domestic cats are susceptible to [avian influenza virus] infection and provide a potential pathway for zoonotic spillover to humans." Bird flu in humans is still relatively rare, although several cases related to contact with dairy cows have been reported in the U.S. An infection can lead to complications such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, bacterial infections, sepsis, brain swelling, and respiratory failure, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Free-roaming cats not only open the door for the spread of zoonotic diseases, but they are also a major threat to wild animals. According to the American Bird Conservancy, cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists domestic cats as one of the world's worst invasive species. For instance, one birder took to Reddit to vent about a neighborhood cat that was killing birds at their backyard birdhouse. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends a variety of precautions to help owners protect themselves and their cats from the avian flu. These include thoroughly cooking meat before feeding; keeping cats away from livestock, poultry, and their environment; keeping cats indoors to prevent exposure; and thoroughly washing hands after encounters with poultry, livestock, or wild birds. Meanwhile, scientists, including a team at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, continue to investigate how the avian flu mutates. Spices have been valued for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine because of their healing properties. In small amounts used for cooking, cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger are generally safe and may provide health benefits, depending on their quality and preparation methods. However, at higher therapeutic doses, they can interact with medications or cause side effects; therefore, long-term use should be monitored by a healthcare professional. Cinnamon Cinnamon spice is extracted from the bark of various species of the cinnamon tree, and essential cinnamon oil is obtained from the bark or leaves. Active constituents include cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and coumarin. Cinnamon provides antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antihypertensive, blood sugar-regulating, and antitumor properties, which may reduce the risk for heart disease and improve brain function. Traditionally, it has also aided digestion and fought infections. Combined with lysozyme, essential oils from Cinnamomum verum and clove ( Syzygium aromaticum ) have been shown to reduce the minimum inhibitory concentrations of gentamicin and imipenem against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae , thereby enhancing antibiotic efficacy and modifying resistance. Its use in patients with breast cancer could be promising, but further studies are needed. However, an in vitro study showed that cinnamaldehyde activates receptors that increase the excretion of certain drugs, potentially reducing their effectiveness. The cheaper Asian cassia cinnamon contains larger amounts of coumarin than the more expensive Ceylon cinnamon; in high doses, coumarin can damage the liver and, in combination with anticoagulants, can increase the risk for bleeding. Interactions may occur with painkillers, antidepressants, chemotherapeutic agents, and antidiabetic drugs. Reported side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches, and skin reactions, such as dermatitis or worsening rosacea. Turmeric Turmeric contains the curcuminoid curcumin, the yellow component of curry powder, masala, and golden milk, prized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and, at therapeutic doses, its anticarcinogenic and analgesic effects. Other compounds may also contribute to the observed cognitive benefits. Caution is advised when extrapolating scientific results from laboratory and animal experiments to humans, particularly because the amounts used in these studies are impractical compared with concentrated curcuminoid curcumin extracts. Curcumin interacts with liver enzymes and may affect antidepressants, antihypertensives, chemotherapeutic agents, and certain antibiotics. Its blood-thinning, blood sugar-lowering, and blood pressure-reducing properties can potentiate the effects of anticoagulants, antidiabetics, insulin, and antihypertensives. Concurrent intake of iron-rich foods can reduce curcumin's bioavailability. To ensure adequate absorption, curcumin should be consumed with fats and piperine-rich black or long pepper, as well as with chili, lemon, ginger, honey, or even cinnamon and nutmeg. The preparation methods are crucial: Cooked roots may offer stronger DNA-protective effects, roasting in ghee may benefit the gut microbiome and compound uptake, and oxidation should be avoided. At therapeutic concentrations, curcumin is contraindicated in gallstones, cholestasis, bleeding disorders or anticoagulation, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ginger Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and antiemetic effects. Some studies suggest blood sugar- and blood lipid-lowering properties, but the extent of interactions with antidiabetic drugs and possible side effects — similar to those of sulfonylureas — requires further research. Ginger is already included in combination products for the treatment of diabetes. Its active constituents, such as gingerol, have blood-thinning effects when consumed regularly, chronically, or in concentrated form, and can increase bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants. Higher doses can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as mucosal irritation, bloating, and heartburn. Conclusion Laboratory studies have indicated potential drug interactions for these spices, but the findings mainly involve high doses rather than typical culinary use. Caution is advised before starting such supplements, particularly in patients taking anticoagulants, antidiabetics, or chemotherapeutic agents. For most people, these spices are considered safe and combine taste with potential health benefits.
