Bursa opens higher as Thailand-Cambodia truce calms regional nerves
At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 1.29 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 1,530.67 from Monday's close of 1,529.38.
The benchmark index had opened 0.20 of a point firmer at 1,529.58.
Market breadth was slightly negative, with decliners leading gainers 171 to 137. A total of 288 counters were unchanged, 1,925 untraded, and 44 suspended.
Turnover stood at 231.67 million shares worth RM112.10 million.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the FBM KLCI could attract further bargain hunting following the unconditional ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
He said this was supported by the diplomatic efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who brokered the agreement between both countries.
Anwar announced the ceasefire after chairing a special meeting on Monday at Putrajaya, attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Meanwhile, Thong said Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) downward revision of the 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast would likely have minimal impact on the local market.
He noted that the earlier cut in the overnight policy rate (OPR) could help cushion the impact of the GDP revision, as investor focus shifts to corporate earnings.
'There will likely be no significant reaction unless there is a major upgrade to the GDP outlook.
'As such, we expect the index to hover between the 1,530 and 1,545 range today,' he told Bernama.
Among the heavyweights, Maybank rose one sen to RM9.55, Tenaga Nasional gained eight sen to RM13.44, while CIMB eased two sen to RM6.73. Public Bank and IHH Healthcare were flat at RM4.25 and RM6.66, respectively.

Nanta: Toll charges could've risen 83% without govt intervention
KUALA LUMPUR: Private vehicle users could have seen toll charges rise by as much as 83% at 10 highways nationwide this year if not for the government's decision to postpone the hike, says Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic). He said the rates would have ranged between 50sen and RM4.56 for private cars or Class 1 vehicles, amounting to about RM136 monthly or RM1,632 annually. The projections were based on a private car user travelling on 10 tolled highways for 20 days a month, or 240 days annually. 'If there was no postponement, road users would have felt a significant impact. We hope that it can at least ease the cost of living burden, especially for those who use the highways daily,' he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. The 10 highways are the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (Grandsaga), Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar), New North Klang Straits Bypass (NNKSB), Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2), South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS), Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), Maju Expressway (MEX) and the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB). Nanta said the toll hike postponement would involve all vehicles – from Class 1 to Class 5 except for the LLB. The toll hike postponement for the LLB only applies to Class 5 vehicles, as Classes 1 to 4 have already reached the maximum toll hike rates allowed under the concession agreement. Class 1 vehicles generally refer to private cars, Class 2 for vans and light goods vehicles, Class 3 for heavy vehicles with three or more axles, Class 4 for taxis, and Class 5 for buses. He added that the government will also have to pay a compensation of RM568.92mil annually to the concessionaires owing to the postponement. Nanta was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan), who asked about the implications of the government postponing toll rate hikes for this year. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the postponement of toll hikes for 10 highways that were scheduled to take effect this year. On another matter, Nanta said abolishing tolls is not easy, adding that it will require the government to cough up billions for highway maintenance. He said the funds could instead be used for other priorities. 'Instead, the government funds can be used in states like Kelantan, Terengganu or Sabah and Sarawak, which do not have tolled roads,' he told Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut), who asked if the government planned to abolish tolls. The minister said there was a possibility that toll rates could be reduced once highway concessionaires achieve their return on investment. 'Then, we can possibly see toll rates be reduced,' he said.

Bursa sees growth in non-trading revenue
Bursa Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed. KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia will continue to focus on its role as the key fundraising platform while serving as an enabler for the country's economic growth. Chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed said key drivers would include strong cash position by fund managers looking for yield and attractive FBM KLCI valuation. The consensus expectation for FBM KLCI 2025 level is 1,664 versus the current levels of 1,530. According to him, the stock exchange has set a double-digit growth target for the next three years for the non-trading revenue segment. The segment registered an increase of 7.6% year-on-year on the back of higher contributions across all segments. 'Except for our Securities Market, all business segments saw revenue in the first half of 2025 (1H25) rise year on-year. 'This reflects the importance of the exchange's strategy to diversify revenue lines by enhancing our offerings across multiple asset classes,' he told a media briefing on the first-half financial results here yesterday. He added that Bursa would continue to maintain its guidance for the second half of the year, supported by a comeback of trading activities since there is clear and strong local liquidity from investors, particularly local investors. The local bourse has kept its 2025 pre-tax profit target of between RM369mil and RM408mil. 'We're maintaining our guidance. Ultimately, it ties back to Malaysia's economic trajectory, with gross domestic product growth for 2025 projected between 4% and 4.8%,' said Fad'l. He pointed out that local fund managers are holding record cash levels at 11.5% as of May – the highest since January 2024. 'We hope to see a greater level of trading activities once those cash are deployed. 'And I think also with the pre-emptive move undertaken by Bank Negara to reduce interest rates by 25 basis points, will bring in additional liquidity to the financial system,' he explained. He added that the initial public offering (IPO) activities are also on track, as market capitalisation more than doubled this time around compared with a year ago. 'The target is still 60 IPO's this year with RM40.2bil in total IPO market capitalisation,' Fad'l said. He noted other positive factors include government bond yields and the ringgit that had remained resilient so far. Bursa saw its net profit fall 29.07% to RM56.51mil in the second quarter ended June 30 from RM80.45mil a year ago. For 1H25, net profit declined 19.29% to RM125.48mil from RM155.48mil a year ago while revenue dropped 7.8% to RM356.96mil. 'The total operating revenue decreased 8.1% due to the lower average daily value of trades recorded, as security trading remained the largest contributor to the total at 42%. 'Derivatives trading revenue, which represents 16% of the group's total operating revenue in the first half of 2025, saw a notable increase of 8.1% year-on-year,' he said. He added that this was mainly due to the higher average daily contract of the crude palm oil (CPO) futures contracts, as there was higher volatility of the underlying CPO prices during this period. Fad'l said at the same time, operating expenses had increased 6.6% to RM189.3mil primarily due to higher staff costs and technology related expenses to support product expansion across asset classes, and capacity building, as well as an increase in administrative and building management expenses. Bursa declared a dividend of 14 sen per share for the first half, amounting to RM113.3mil corresponding to a dividend payout ratio of 90.3%.
