Breakingviews - Nintendo can flex its pricing power with Switch 2
That sales ratio is flattered by Nintendo making the game a pack-in with the console—its most expensive ever, at $450—but underscores the willingness of fans to shell out more cash for both. The hardware for the American market is shipped from Vietnam, yet analysts at JPMorgan estimate that the Donald Trump administration's decision to double tariffs on the country to 20% will have little effect on earnings until next year. Little wonder shares jumped almost 6% on Monday.
The $110 billion company nonetheless struck a typically conservative tone in its latest guidance, maintaining its sales forecast of just 15 million Switch 2 units for the current financial year even as it noted tariffs had 'no significant impact'. The more meaningful move came in a separate announcement of price rises for models of the original Switch averaging 14%, which did not mention tariffs but warned price adjustments for the sequel console 'may be necessary in the future'.
An equivalent 14% hike to the Switch 2's sticker price would cost consumers more than $510 a pop — well over rival Sony's more powerful PlayStation 5, whose disc-free model also retails for $450. What Sony does not have are entries in longstanding series such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon, which have driven steady sales of the Kyoto-based games maker's consoles for decades. High review scores for the Switch 2-exclusive Donkey Kong Bananza also bode well for sales in the second half.
Moreover, Sony will lack a blockbuster contender for the holiday season thanks to the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI, which had been expected to boost PS5 sales this year. That gives Nintendo an opening to make gains at the margins, yet there is a risk it could overplay its hand if it raises prices too high too quickly. A recession in the U.S., which accounts for 40% of net sales, could also dent earnings. Even so, the bumper sales so far make a solid case for the company to charge gamers more for its wares, and sooner than later.

Major Democrat is under criminal investigation after Trump called him a 'scam artist'
A Democrat enemy of Donald Trump is under criminal investigation for mortgage fraud after the president called him a 'scam artist' who belonged in prison. California Senator Adam Schiff is accused of misrepresenting which home he used as his primary residence. A Trump administration insider told Fox News host Laura Ingraham that the US Attorney's Office in Maryland is considering pressing charges. The Department of Justice last month received a criminal referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) allegeding Schiff falsified bank documents and property records to secure better loan terms. In a 2011 affidavit signed by Schiff, he declared a home in Montgomery County, Maryland, as his primary residence, but as recent as 2023, a condominium in Burbank, California, is also listed as his primary residence. Schiff and his wife purchased a Maryland home in 2003 for $870,000 with a $610,000 mortgage. The rate was set at 5.625 percent over 30 years, on the basis that it was their primary and principal residence. 'Based on media reports, Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003-2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property,' FHFA Director William Pulte wrote. 'As regulator of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks, we take very seriously allegations of mortgage fraud or other criminal activity. 'Such misconduct jeopardizes the safety and soundness of FHFA's regulated entities and the security and stability of the U.S. mortgage market.' Last month, Trump hit out at Schiff in a Truth Social post in the latest escalation in their long-running feud. 'Adam 'Shifty' Schiff is in BIG TROUBLE,' Trump wrote. 'He falsified loan documents.' Trump also went on to slam Schiff for orchestrating an 'American Tragedy' by investigating his son Donald Trump Jr.'s phone records in 2019 amid concerns about the origin of a meeting with Russians held in Trump Tower three years prior. 'He once said my son would go to prison on a SCAM that Schiff, along with other Crooked Dems, illegally 'manufactured' in order to stage an actual coup,' Trump wrote. 'My son did nothing wrong, knew nothing about the fictional story. It was an American Tragedy! 'Now Shifty should pay the price of prison for a real crime, not one made up by the corrupt accusers!' Schiff had threatened to subpoena Don Jr. to glean new details about two phone calls he made to blocked numbers after meeting with a Russian lawyer. At the time, Trump was under investigation for potentially colluding with the Kremlin. He also led the charge to impeach Trump in his role as chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan told the publication it was 'awfully coincidental' that Trump's critics have been subjected to home loan investigations. 'You don't get a free pass because you're a public official,' McQuade said. 'But I think they've really undermined the credibility of the department by staking out this ground seeking retribution against Trump's enemies.' Trump said he wanted to see Schiff 'brought to justice' through the investigation into his finances. But Schiff maintained his innocence and argued he was being persecuted by the Trump administration as political retribution for his involvement in opposing the family over the years. 'This is just Donald Trump's latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies,' Schiff wrote on X. 'So it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be.' A spokesperson for his office insisted the lenders for both of his homes - one in Washington and another in California - were aware that he intended to use both year-round while serving in public office. He maintained neither home is considered a 'vacation' property. Appointing one home as a primary residence can allow a borrower to secure lower rates, because it is considered a less risky investment. Schiff took aim at the president during an appearance on Stephen Colbert's show telling him to 'p**s off '. 'But before you p**s off, would you release the Epstein files?' Schiff asked, to rapturous applause. It is unclear how Trump became aware of Schiff's mortgages, or what involvement he has played in the investigation so far. According to The Washington Post, a confidential memo within Fannie Mae, the lender responsible for the questionable loans, said an investigation has been ongoing amid concerns Schiff 'engaged in a sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation on 5 Fannie Mae loans'. The internal memo states the company's financial crimes team received a document demand from the Federal Housing Finance Agency on May 12 relating to loan files. It states that a condo in Burbank, California, has at times been listed as a 'primary residence' before adding, 'however the 691 square foot, 1-bedroom unit appears unsuitable for a family of four, raising doubts about their true occupancy intent.' Each of the loans involved have since been paid off in full.

Cameron Diaz, 52, looks nearly unrecognizable as she goes fresh-faced in New York City
Cameron Diaz looked nearly unrecognizable as she stepped out in a fresh-faced, no-makeup look over the weekend. On Sunday, the 52-year-old actress was dressed for comfort as she modeled a casual, double denim outfit for a stroll in New York City. She seemed chill and comfortable as she walked around in the oversize ensemble with a relaxed fit — a combination that was much different than her usual, glamorous looks. The Charlie's Angel star — who saw many of her X-rated confessions about her steamy love life resurface earlier this year — had her platinum blonde hair tied up in an effortless updo. She wore a pair of rectangular, gold-framed glasses and flashed a cheek-to-cheek grin as she made her way through the city. Her outing comes after the star, a vocal advocate of aging naturally, previously admitted to what cosmetic procedures she had gotten done in the past. On Sunday, the 52-year-old actress was dressed for comfort as she modeled a casual, double denim outfit for a stroll in New York City Over a decade ago, she confessed to getting Botox injections but said she stopped as she regretted getting the procedure done. In January 2014, she spoke about her experience with injections at the time. 'I've tried [Botox] before, where it was like [a] little tiny touch of something,' she told ET at the time. 'It changed my face in such a weird way that I was like, "No, I don't want to [be] like [that]." I'd rather see my face aging than a face that doesn't belong to me at all.' She continued, adding that she learned to embrace her laugh lines. 'I love it. I don't mind. It's like, "Guess what this means, I've smiled my whole life." I love life. I'm happy I don't have a problem with that.' She also once publicly discussed getting a nose job in 2006 after she broke her nose from a surfing accident. This comes after her many X-rated confessions about her sex life over the years recently resurfaced. She previously made a number of shocking admissions from her 'animalistic' tendencies in bed to how far she would go for a booty call. In various instances, the Back In Action star had also dished on one of her favorite places to have sex, her 'hungry vagina' and her sexual attraction to women. Diaz is currently married to Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden, 46, who once admitted he 'fears' her while making rare comments about their marriage. Before they tied the knot, the Charlie's Angels alum previously recalled how she journeyed many miles and 'traveled for c**k.' She also spoke about how her love language is definitely physical touch as her many confessions resurfaced earlier this year. Back in 2010, she dished to Playboy about how she went above and beyond for a booty call. 'Oh gosh, I can't even count how many times I've gotten on a plane for love. It's not unusual in this business; my lifestyle demands it.' She added: 'I'm always traveling for c**k. You've got to go where it is.' Diaz also once confessed to how she is 'primal' with her lover and how she enjoys having outdoor sex in the 'open' air. 'I'm primal on an animalistic level, kind of like, "Bonk me over the head, throw me on your shoulder. You man, me woman",' she said in the same interview with Playboy. 'There's something about moonlight on the body and things happening sort of free and open...' She added: 'I love to cuddle. I love physical contact. I have to be touching my lover, like, always. It's not optional. It's an absolute. My lover is everything to me.' Diaz also previously made an appearance on comedian Chelsea Handler's show, Chelsea Lately, in 2014 and stressed the importance of being educated about sex anatomy. 'For me, the vagina is such an integral part of the body. We think the vagina is on the outside,' she said before encouraging others to 'learn about it' and 'get in there' with consent. 'You're supposed to treat it like a beautiful flower — the delicate flower that it is. And you're supposed to nurture it in all the ways that it needs nurturing. It's hungry.' She told Glamour in 2014 about her attraction to women. 'I think women are beautiful — absolutely beautiful. 'I think that all women have been sexually attracted to another woman at some point,' she continued. 'It's natural to have a connectivity and an appreciation for the beauty of other women.' She also talked about her love for women in her Playboy interview from 2010. 'Sexuality and love can be different things. I can be attracted to a woman sexually,' she said. 'But it doesn't mean I want to be in love with a woman.' She added: 'If I'm going to be with a woman sexually, it doesn't mean I'm a lesbian. We put these restraints and definitions on people, but it's hard to define.'

Halsey is SLAMMED for uncomfortably raunchy post in bed with fiance that fans say should be 'illegal'
Halsey was criticized for sharing an exhibitionist snap of her shirtless fiancé Avan Jogia embracing her bare legs while they were in bed Tuesday. The 30-year-old pop star - who boasts 70.7M social media followers - captioned her Instagram slideshow: 'There's babygirl everywhere for those with the eyes to see.' The 33-year-old former Nickelodeon star replied in the comments section: 'Air is unbreathable without you in it.' 'Babygirl' was likely a reference to the time the betrothed couple donned fetish wear to attend the December 11th premiere of Nicole Kidman 's erotic BDSM thriller of the same name in West Hollywood, CA. Halsey (born Ashley Frangipane) was slammed for the PDA post by Instagram users like @collectsunrays, who commented: 'First slide should be illegal.' 'I shouldn't have had to see that,' Instagram user @_old_accountttt blasted. 'At least give a warning.' And Instagram user @enis_no scolded: 'Halsey that's not appropriate! There are kids on Instagram.' The three-time Grammy nominee and Avan - who originally met in Barcelona - announced they were engaged September 12 after a year-long whirlwind romance, and she 'just knew I wanted to marry him.' 'I never wanted to be married - never,' Halsey scoffed on the October 30th episode of Call Her Daddy. 'I can't even explain why [I want to marry Jogia] you know what I mean? Because I do I love him in such a way that I feel like we would be just as fine if we didn't, but something about that makes me want to do it more.' The groom and bride-to-be both happen to be biracial - Avan is half Indian and Halsey is half black. The Ego songstress also included a puzzle snap of her son Ender Ridley Aydin from her five-year relationship with babydaddy Alev Aydin, which ended in 2023. When little Ender turned four on July 14, Halsey gushed that he was 'the best thing I've ever been a part of.' 'Everyday I am left speechless and awe-struck by how kind, insightful, gentle, funny, creative, curious and cool he is,' the About-Face Beauty founder captioned her Instagram slideshow. 'I shouldn't have had to see that,' Instagram user @_old_accountttt blasted. 'At least give a warning' 'Mind you I just opened this app,' Instagram user @crowded_mind commented And Instagram user @enis_no scolded: 'Halsey that's not appropriate! There are kids on Instagram' 'His favorite painter is Van Gogh. He loves A Tribe Called Quest and The Cranberries. He collects tiny treasures and stores them in jars. He is the first person to notice if a friend gets hurt. He remembers names and favorite colors, and his is yellow because he is joy. He is absolute magic.' Halsey previously romanced Evan Peters, Yungblud, G-Eazy, Machine Gun Kelly, Lido, and Matty Healy. Meanwhile, the Autopsy of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob poet previously dated his Zombieland co-star Zoey Deutch between 2012-2017 and his Now Apocalypse co-star Cleopatra Coleman between 2017-2021. The New Jersey native will next portray Mandy Starr in Tony Tost's long-delayed crime thriller Americana, which hits US theaters August 15 and UK theaters August 22. That's technically two years after Americana's world premiere at South by Southwest and three years after production wrapped in New Mexico. Lionsgate's modern-day western - formerly known as National Anthem - also stars Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, and Simon Rex. Halsey then concludes her $3.5M-grossing, 31-date For My Last Trick: The Tour at Turkey's Yenikapi Festival Park in Istanbul on August 28, which will be filmed. The I Never Loved You belter will also reunite with her MaXXXine director Ti West for Amazon MGM Studios series Bloodlust that she's creating, writing, and producing. 'I started the pilot a few years ago and Amazon wanted it and they took it and now we're getting it on the road,' Halsey told THR on Sunday. 'There's not so much that I can say but it's really cool to be a part of a project that I don't face. It's quite relieving. [I'm] just behind the scenes, just the puppet master. I don't have to do my make-up.' As for Avan, his upcoming acting projects include Amazon MGM Studios' eight-episode erotic thriller 56 Days and A24's sci-fi horror The Backrooms directed by Kane Parsons.
