Barry Sanders working to raise awareness after suffering a heart attack last year

NBC Sports13-06-2025
A year ago, Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders announced that he had been through a health scare, but did not provide any details. Today Sanders revealed that he suffered a heart attack.
Sanders is now urging people to get a complete medical checkup to monitor their own heart health.
'Of all things, I don't know why, that just never entered my mind,' Sanders told CBS Sports. 'I'm learning through this process that there aren't necessarily any warning signs, unless you do what we're encouraging people to do, which is to go the doctor, get tested for LDLC levels, or bad cholesterol. That's the only way to find out if you have high cholesterol. It's not something you're going to be able to feel. You don't have to fit a certain physical profile.'
Sanders appears in a documentary, The Making of a Heart Attack, that airs Saturday on A&E.
'It's really been an education, for me, learning about how frequent this happens all over the U.S.,' Sanders said. 'Conversing with these other individuals who are part of this documentary who have very insightful, gripping stories about the journey that they've been on. It's just really amazing. I think it will get a lot of people's attention.'
An all-time great like Sanders discussing his health problems will definitely get people's attention, and may save lives if it spurs more people to get the checkups that so many of us put off.

Takeaways from Deion Sanders' press conference updating his health

Deion Sanders shocked the sports world Monday morning, announcing he was treated for bladder cancer earlier this year and is now cancer free. While it was not the traditional opening to fall camp that one expected, Sanders provided the Colorado team and its fans with much-needed clarity on his health ahead of the season. Sanders did not discuss anything directly related to the team, despite it being the first day of camp; instead, he focused solely on his health. With so much discussed during Monday's press conference, we broke down everything that was said into five key takeaways. Deion Sanders is cured of bladder cancer The most significant piece of news to emerge from the press conference is that Deion Sanders is cancer-free. After a relatively short battle with bladder cancer, Sanders and his oncologist, Janet Kukreja, said that he is cured after the removal of his entire bladder. The Colorado football program couldn't ask for better news going into the season, as Sanders' cancer battle is behind him. Sanders' cancer was caught early Despite not having symptoms, Sanders' cancer was caught early, allowing for the removal of the bladder before the cancer spread. The cancer was caught during a routine CT scan that Sanders received because of his history of blood clot issues. He chose a treatment plan beneficial to his life goals Sanders is a father of five and the football coach of a Power Four program; weekly visits to a hospital to receive cancer treatments did not fit his needs. Sanders instead chose to remove his bladder, which included the creation of a prosthetic bladder made from his intestine. Colorado football will be immensely motivated this season If playing for Coach Prime was not motivating enough, every player on Colorado's roster will now be playing for a coach who fought cancer a certain way so he could coach them this fall. That is inspirational for the entire locker room. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. E.coli warning after 'two people taken ill' after bathing in North Yorkshire river

A campaign group has claimed two people have fallen ill in the last week with after bathing in a North Yorkshire river. The group, Stop Ure Pollution, also claims that one of the two people was hospitalised as a result of bathing in the river in mid-Wensleydale. Professor Richard Loukota, the group's leader, has carried out weekly tests at various points along the River Ure, including Ulshaw Bridge (four times), Aysgarth Falls (twice) and Worton (once). Professor Loukota used a hand-held testing kit, called Bactiquick, which detects a wide range of endotoxins including and salmonella. The test shows a red light and a numerical value if there are high levels of endotoxins in the water. Two tests were carried out at Aysgarth Falls on July 20 and 27, and according to the campaign group, both tests had a red light and a numerical value. The samples were then sent to a registered lab and to Save Our Swale, a community group working to keep the River Swale clean for water-based recreation and wildlife, in Richmond for further testing. The group has said the endotoxins and levels were shown to be a high risk for humans and dogs to bathe in the River Ure safely. Bactiquick results are 'high risk' at levels above 58 ERU (endotoxin risk units), and the results from the River Ure have been 151, 166, 151, 149 and 146. The Environment Agency was contacted, but did not want to comment directly on the claims. It is understood that the River Ure is not a designated bathing space. On reports of two people being taken ill with E. coli after bathing in the water, Professor Loukota said: 'This situation is very concerning and all water users should be aware of the risks, take the appropriate hand hygiene steps and should avoid ingesting river water particularly after rainy weather, when Combined Sewage Outlets are most likely to discharge and animal faecal matter is more likely to be washed into the river.' The Government has a dedicated page on guidance on healthy swimming. Rivers and open water locations that are not designated bathing spots are managed for the purpose of protecting fish and wildlife, not people, so health risks from using these locations may be higher than at designated bathing waters. The section reads: 'These waters are not monitored for the two types of bacteria; intestinal enterococci and which are used to assess bathing water quality. 'They can contain levels of sewage, faeces from livestock and pollution from farming or industry which are harmless to wildlife but would not be acceptable in designated bathing waters.'

Deion Sanders Gives Worrying Update on Recent Health Issues: ‘Still Going Through Something'

Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has been away from the team for much of the offseason due to an unspecified health issue. The matter has been ongoing for nearly two months. 'Coach Prime' hinted at health struggles on a May 30 podcast with former NFL player Asante Samuel, mentioning a 14-pound weight loss and describing his condition as being at 'a whole other level.' In a video posted by his son, Deion Sanders Jr., on Sunday, he indicated that he is not fully recovered but is actively working on his health. The video shows Sanders engaging in activities with his daughter, Shelomi, like a 1.3-mile 'run-walk' and a recovery ice bath. 'You know I'm still going through something,' Sanders said as he prepared to get into the tub. 'I ain't all the way recovered.' Deion Sanders' Health Issues Persist Sanders has been out of the public eye since the NFL draft in April and missed key team events, including summer football camps, which are part of his contract. He canceled a keynote speech at the Sickle Cell Disease Research and Education Symposium in Florida on June 8 due to a last-minute 'scheduling change,' prompting speculation about the true reasons. Magic Johnson would eventually step in as a replacement. During a YouTube livestream that same day, Sanders Jr. indicated his father is 'feeling well' but did not provide a timeline for his return to Colorado camps. 'When we get back in Boulder, I don't know,' Deion Jr. said. 'I'm waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I'll go. Until then, I'm going to sit here with him.' 'He'll tell you all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,' he added. RELATED: Snaps at a Reporter for Asking a Basic Question Deion Sanders, though, hasn't been letting the public know too much about his current health struggles, instead offering coy comments in random videos about going through 'something.' And when the media dares to ask about it … look out! A reporter with The Athletic asked about his situation during Big 12 Media Days earlier this month, and Sanders responded by accusing the outlet of reporting 'bull junk.' 'Athletic, sometimes y'all be on that bull-junk, so I'm really not gonna tell you much. You know that. But I'm not here to talk about my health,' he fired back. 'I'm here to talk about my team.' Sanders has every right to keep his medical issues under wraps. But reporters might not provide 'bull junk' updates if they're given the truth. He also had every right not to mention that he was 'going through something' at all, preventing any wild speculation from continuing.
