SAG-AFTRA has suspended its gaming industry strike over AI protections
SAG-AFTRA has suspended its strike against ten game studios. The organization's national board will meet tomorrow to consider a tentative agreement with the developers; more details of the arrangement will be disclosed if and when the board agrees to the terms.
Variety obtained a statement from a spokesperson for the gaming companies that offered some hints about the contents of the potential deal: "This agreement builds on three decades of successful partnership between the interactive entertainment industry and the union. It delivers historic wage increases of over 24 percent for performers, enhanced health and safety protections, and industry-leading AI provisions requiring transparency, consent and compensation for the use of digital replicas in games."
It's been almost a year since the performers' union called a strike against the companies participating in the Interactive Media Agreement. The move was part of an effort to secure protections for its members regarding AI-generated likenesses of their voices and bodies in the gaming industry. In addition to the negotiations with the IMA businesses, SAG-AFTRA recently took action against Epic Games for its use of an AI-generated voice for Darth Vader in Fortnite .

Charlize Theron Talks About Threats To Human Rights
You know actor Charlize Theron. She's starring in The Old Guard 2, the action-packed sequel to the 2020 Netflix adaptation based on Greg Rucka's comic book series. But Charlize doesn't just play a badass in action movies; she's quite the actionable activist in her everyday life. On June 28, at the fifth annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program Block Party in Los Angeles, the Oscar winner's remarks about LGBTQ and women's rights, immigration, and cuts to foreign aid were very compelling. "The world feels like it's burning because it is," she said, according to Variety. "Here in Los Angeles, in the US and across the globe, we are moving backwards fast." "Immigration policy is destroying the lives of families, not criminals," the UN Messenger of Peace continued. "Women's rights are becoming less and less every day, queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased, and gender-based violence is on the rise. This isn't just policy, it's personal. Fuck them." "Foreign aid cuts brought HIV and AIDS programs in my home country of South Africa to an absolute standstill," Charlize said. "All of this is not just detrimental, it's dangerous. People will lose their lives. Many have already unfortunately and at a frightening rate. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see this kind of unnecessary suffering." While Charlize's speech highlighted very concerning issues, she closed her speech by addressing how activism can work toward a solution. "What we also see, what we cannot miss, is the resistance," she said. "There is hope, there is power in all of us standing up, organizing, protesting, voting and caring for each other, and refusing to accept that this is the new normal." CTAOP was established in 2007 to support young people living in South Africa, where Charlize is from. According to Variety, the organization's "programs have reached more than 4.5 million youth and granted $15 million to organizations in southern Africa." While CTAOP's mission is focused on South Africa, Charlize explained their work is to value all humanity, everywhere. "That spirit of resistance, justice and care for each other, that's the spirit that drives the work at CTAOP," she said. "Although our focus is on the youth in southern Africa, what we're really talking about here tonight is that all lives should be valued. Everyone should have the right to be healthy and safe and should be able to be seen." Talking with Mark Malkin, Charlize said, "It's quite devastating what's going to happen…It's less than one percent of this budget that everyone is talking about and when you compare that to the millions of people that are going to die because of this, it's devastating. 🚨MASSIVE 🚨 Spoilers follow for the end of Squid Game. The third and final season of the Netflix global smash Squid Game hit the streaming service this weekend — and there's a good chance you've already watched the whole thing, up until the shocking conclusion. Brief refresher, in case you somehow already forgot: In the final episode, the show's protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) decides to kill himself, effectively making the newborn daughter of Players 222 and 333 the winner of the competition — and, as the Front Man takes her to safety, the 45.6 billion won prize. Well, in a new interview with Variety, the show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says that the series almost ended way differently — and in much more shocking fashion, too. 'When I had a vague idea about what kind of story I wanted to tell through Seasons 2 and 3, I actually had a different ending in mind,' he said. 'And then as I went through the writing process, as I created my characters, as I laid out the foundation and the outline of the story, and as I drew out the map for Gi-hun's character arc, I realized, this shouldn't be the way this story ends — and this is a better ending, or the right ending, for this arc." "And so there was actually a very drastic change in the ending compared to when I just had only a vague idea about the story, and then when I really got into the writing process.' 'In the finale, Gi-hun makes a choice," Hwang added, "and originally, when I was just thinking about where the story was going to take me, it was actually the exact opposite choice.' Yikes.
