UAE foreign minister welcomes UK's decision to recognise Palestinian state
Keir Starmer recently announced he would recognise Palestine as a separate state during the United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
He took this step to strengthen the international community's efforts to achieve the two-state solution and establish a just and lasting peace in the region.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed the UAE's appreciation for this important decision, which comes at a pivotal moment that requires the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and work collectively to activate the political process and end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
This will contribute to enhancing security and stability in the region, while simultaneously supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among which is the establishment of an independent, sovereign state, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and international agreements.
The minister also also reiterated the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting the aspirations of the Palestinian people, safeguarding their rights, and continuing to work with regional and international partners to achieve a just and sustainable solution that ends the conflict and paves the way for a more stable and prosperous future for all peoples of the region.

Turkey knocked six zeroes off its currency, the lira, in 2005, after years of high inflation. Zimbabwe once removed 10 zeros, turning 10 billion dollars into one after hyper-inflation ravaged the economy. In June, Iranian lawmakers approved new economy minister Ali Madanizadeh after his predecessor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, was ousted in a no-confidence vote for failing to address the country's economic woes. The current bill will have to pass a parliamentary vote and gain the approval of the Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation. It wasn't clear when that would happen.

US Speaker of the House visits Israeli settlement in West Bank
Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, visited the Israeli settlement of Ariel in the West Bank on Monday, according to reports. A photo posted on X by Israel Hayom showed settlement mayor Yair Chetboun with Mr Johnson and the Speaker's wife after apparently having planted a tree. Mr Johnson is the highest-ranking US official to visit an Israeli settlement. Marc Zell, chairman of Republicans Overseas Israel, said in a post on X that Mr Johnson had called the West Bank - which he referred to by its biblical name of "Judea and Samaria" - 'the rightful property of the Jewish people'. The Speaker was originally scheduled to visit Israel at the end of June, but that was derailed by the air war between Israel and Iran. The private visit was organised by a pro-Israel advocacy group, Axios reported, quoting Israeli officials. He was accompanied on his visit to Israel by a group of Republican members of Congress. The group held a meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz, who thanked them for their 'unwavering support and moral clarity in standing with Israel against its enemies'. Mr Johnson's office did not immediately respond to The National' s request for comment. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the visit, calling it 'a blatant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and the Arab and US efforts to stop the war, halt the cycle of violence, and achieve calm'. The ministry said the visit was a 'clear contradiction with the declared US position regarding settlements and settlers' attacks'. It added that it views the visit as 'an encouragement of settlement crimes, settlers' actions, and the confiscation of Palestinian lands. Mr Johnson, a Republican and supporter of US President Donald Trump, has frequently voiced strong support for Israel. While American politicians have visited Israeli settlements in the past, this is the first time a Speaker of the House – third in line of the presidential succession – has done so. Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo visited a winery in the West Bank in 2020. Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories are considered to be illegal under international law. Under former president Joe Biden, the US described settlements as 'illegitimate' and imposed sanctions on several Israeli settlers, freezing their US assets and barring Americans from dealing with them following growing reports of violence by settlers against Palestinians – including American citizens. Mr Trump reversed those sanctions soon after taking office.

Canada announces Gaza aid drop
The Canadian Armed Forces, using a CC-130J Hercules aircraft, carried out an air drop of more than 21,000 lbs of aid into Gaza on Monday, Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced. "Canada is taking these exceptional measures with our international partners as access to humanitarian aid in Gaza is severely restricted and humanitarian needs have reached an unprecedented level," Anand said in her statement. "Despite the scale of need, humanitarian partners face severe challenges in delivering life-saving food and medical assistance by land due to ongoing restrictions imposed by the Israeli government. This obstruction of aid is a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately," she added. Last week Anand announced new funding of $21.77m USD (30m CAD) towards the humanitarian needs of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, including support to logistical operations along the Jordanian corridor; support to the United Nations and Red Cross to scale up aid deliveries into Gaza; and the input of Canadian-funded humanitarian supplies into the Gaza supply line, with help from Jordan. An additional $7.26m (10m CAD) was provided to the World Bank "to support the Palestinian Authority's role in stabilising and governing the West Bank," Global Affairs Canada said.
