‘We went through it': Billy Bush recalls how big celeb interview in Miami went south

Miami Heralda day ago
Of all the celebrities Billy Bush has interviewed over the years, one 'uncomfortable situation' stands out. And it's not regarding the person you may think, Donald Trump, he told Rob Lowe on his 'Literally' podcast on July 10.
The TV personality was infamously fired from 'Today' in 2016 after audio resurfaced of him laughing with the then 'Apprentice' star, who made sexually charged comments on a bus more than a decade before.
Despite Bush's career being thrown into turmoil after the scandal, he told Lowe one of his most awkward interviews wasn't with the leader of the free world, but with Latin pop icon Ricky Martin.
Though he didn't specify the year, he said around the 36-minute mark he was working in the early aughts on 'Access Hollywood' as East Coast correspondent. He was assigned to fly to Miami to talk to the heartthrob who was still basking in his 1999 hit 'Livin' La Vida Loca,' about a new album.
The night before, Bush told Lowe he asked a bunch of women in his hotel bar the question they would want posed to the former Menudo singer. The consensus: Was the rumor true that Martin was gay.
After consulting with his producer, Bush decided to go for it.
'Bush, man,' Lowe said, disappointed. 'Bush, man.'
'Don't scold me,' Bush answered, recounting that when he asked Martin about his sexuality, he immediately tensed up.
Bush said Martin cursed him out, telling him he was 'a piece of garbage' for trying to make headlines after Barbara Walters had already tried to get the hot tea (unsuccessfully) in 2000.
Bush then revealed that Martin ripped off his microphone and stormed off the set, and he felt terrible.
'He was legitimately hurt, and I'm not in the business of hurting people,' said the native New Yorker who then went to Martin's dressing room and apologized for the 'inappropriate' question.
'I'm like, 'Ricky, I am so sorry for asking that question. I don't know what I was thinking.' It was a cowboy question,' said Bush, who had that part of the footage destroyed.
Martin apparently responded in a thoughtful way, telling Bush that despite 'struggling' with his sexuality his whole life, he didn't feel comfortable coming out while promoting a project.
'We went through it,' said the TV personality. 'I learned a valuable lesson that day: Don't be an a--hole, don't be an idiot.'
Martin, now a single father to three, eventually came out on his website in March 2010.
'I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man,' the native Puerto Rican wrote. 'I am very blessed to be who I am.'
As for Bush, he was in the crosshairs for many years over the Trump hot mic fallout, ultimately landing back in the spotlight on 'Extra' for five years until May.
The divorced father of three is now devoting his time to interviewing headline makers for his 'Hot Mics' podcast.
Through his reps, Bush cited the reason for moving on was that he was 'hungrier and more stimulated' than at any point in his professional career.
'It's now time to build something of my own,' the statement said. 'I'm forever grateful to the amazing staff at 'Extra' and the executives at Warner Bros. for this awesome chapter of my life. I mean every word of that. I have had a tremendous run.'

‘Today' co-hosts tease Carson Daly over Jennifer Love Hewitt romance: ‘We know what you did THAT summer'

Carson Daly's co-hosts are teasing him over this past flame. While on the 'Today' show on Tuesday for his pop culture segment, Daly, 52, discussed the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel. The 1997 original movie starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Helen Shivers, Ryan Phillippe as Barry William Cox, and the entertainment host's ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Love Hewitt, as Julie James. 10 Carson Daly on the 'Today Show' in March. Gellar and Phillippe's characters died in the original movie. During his segment, Daly pulled up a picture of the Prinze and Gellar, 48, from the original 1997 premiere, as well as a shot of them during Monday night's premiere. The real-life married couple first met on the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' movie set, but didn't start dating until 2000. 10 Carson Daly and Jennifer Love Hewitt attend the 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' premiere. 'Were you at that premiere?' Guthrie asked, while Jenna Bush Hager echoed her co-host's sentiments, inquiring, 'Did you go to that premiere?' When Daly slyly responded, 'I'm not sure. I can't remember 30 years ago,' Guthrie clapped back, 'We know what you did that summer.' 10 Carson Daly and Jennifer Love Hewitt during 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. FilmMagic Daly did not attend the October 1997 carpet, but was at the premiere of 1998's 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.' Both stars have since moved on romantically. Hewitt tied the knot with her 'Client List' co-star, Brian Hallisay, in 2013. The couple shares three kids: Autumn, 11, Atticus, 10, and Aidan, 3. Daly has been married to Siri Pinter since 2015. They are parents to Jackson, 16, Etta, 12, and London, 10, and Goldie, 5. 10 Jennifer Love Hewitt attends the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' premiere in 1997. This time around, 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' follows five friends who 'inadvertently cause a deadly car accident' before they 'cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences,' per Sony Pictures. However, 'a year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they're forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.' 10 Jennifer Love Hewitt and her husband Brian Hallisay. Jennifer Love Hewitt/Instagram In April, Hewitt got candid on re-joining the franchise. 'I'll be super honest, I had total anxiety for 48 hours before [filming] because I was like, 'Can I do this? Am I going to pull this off?' It's a lot of pressure,' she told People at the time. Her fears were soon put to rest. 10 Carson Daly with his wife and kids in 2017. It really felt like an honor. Stepping into her shoes again was really fun.' Hewitt's character has also found its way into her home life. Julie James has an iconic line in the original movie, yelling at the killer, 'What are you waiting for, huh?' Her youngest son 'now says it daily.' Hewitt told Screen Rant in an interview published Tuesday: 'Just the other day, he was standing on the stairs, and he goes, 'Mommy, I want to go to the park. What are you waiting for, huh?'' 10 Jennifer Love Hewitt in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 'And he just says these things, and now for dinner, he'll be like, 'I'm hungry. What are you waiting for, huh?' And it's hilarious, literally me on the floor laughing every time. So I love it. It's been great, and I just appreciate that there's a line that means that much to people out there.' 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' hits theaters on Friday.

Want to perform at Outside Lands? Here's your chance

Outside Lands is debuting a new stage next month, and festivalgoers will get to be some of the first to perform on it. The three-day Golden Gate Park music festival, set to take place from Aug. 8-10, plans to allow a select few ticket holders to perform on its new Duboce Triangle stage, which is nestled in the eucalyptus trees of McLaren Pass, through an advance open mic contest. These daily fan-inclusive sets, also hosted by Rainbow Girls, will kick off the new stage's programming each afternoon. After each day's opening set, attendees can expect performances by artists such as folk singer Kate Bollinger, rapper Lexa Gates and alternative group Bay Ledges. DJ sets will include TikTok singer-songwriter INJI, singer and producer Mayer Hawthorne and genre-bending duo Paco Versailles. Named after the famed San Francisco neighborhood that is situated between the Castro and Eureka Valley, the Duboce Triangle stage is the latest in a string of new attractions that Outside Lands organizers have been incorporating into the festival over the past few years. This year's festival will see the return of fan favorites including Dolores', an inclusive dance floor that celebrates queer and trans communities; SOMA, an open-air space for fans of electronic dance music to let loose; the Latin dance music space, Casa Bacardí; and the marriage venue, City Hall. Rapper Tyler, the Creator, hip-hop artist Doja Cat and folk singer Hozier are set to headline the annual music festival, which also features 'Anxiety' rapper Doechii, rock group Vampire Weekend and singer-songwriter Finneas on its lineup.

The BBC's top-earning stars missing from salary list

Gary Lineker took the top spot on the BBC's salary list for the eighth year in a row but did you spot the names missing from the list, like The Traitors' Claudia Winkleman? There will always be certain big-name stars who never make the BBC top earnings list. Strictly's Winkleman, Rylan Clark, Michael McIntyre, Graham Norton and Bradley Walsh are among the BBC's top talent but their names are not featured on the salary list. One thing they all have in common is that they are not directly employed by the BBC and instead, they are contracted through production companies. BBC Studios is one example and it is a commercial organisation that is not supported by the licence fee. The BBC only publishes the big salaries of stars it employs directly. Stars employed directly by the BBC who earn more than £178,000 will have their names and salaries published. Interestingly, some stars appear on the list but for only some of their BBC work. One notable example is Vernon Kay who is named in ninth place on the list with a salary of £390,000 — £394,999. It only includes his Radio 2 job. Any money he earns for co-presenting The One Show doesn't feature in his published salary. Kay's co-presenters Alex Jones, Roman Kemp and more, also wouldn't have their salary for The One Show appear in the BBC's top earning list. There are too many well paid stars who are missing from the BBC's highest-paid salaries list to feature them all here. McIntyre could be potentially at the top of the salary list because of his big Saturday night shows The Wheel and Big Show, BBC News reported. Winkleman would likely feature high on the list thanks to her hosting jobs on Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors. Graham Norton would appear in the list too and Winkleman also filled in for the star on his BBC chat show this year. Strictly's main stars Tess Daly, Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Motsi Mabuse, Craig Revel Horwood don't make the list. Gladiators host Walsh is also absent from the BBC salary list. More big names missing include: Rylan, Sort Your Life Out's Stacey Solomon, Would I Lie To You?'s Rob Brydon, Not Going Out star Lee Mack, David Mitchell, Romesh Ranganathan, Only Connect's Victoria Coren-Mitchell Amanda & Alan's Spanish Job stars Alan Carr and Amanda Holden as well as Alison Hammond for her Big Weekend series. It wasn't surprising that Lineker and Zoe Ball led the highest-paid BBC stars once again.
