
Sunair says passenger services grounded for 10 days by Civil Aviation Authority
He said the relevant details were basically deemed not to have been recorded the way the authority wanted.
The airline's certificate of airworthiness was revoked.
'Effectively in layman's terms, it's the WoF [Warrant of Fitness],' Roberts said.
He understood the ban was for 10 consecutive days, finishing on Sunday.
Sunair operated five Piper PA-23 Aztec and three Cessna 172 aircraft.
The Aztec is a twin-engine, six-seater and the 172 is a single-engine, four-seater.
Roberts said the CAA advised Sunair to have 'more robustness and rigour' with the relevant record-keeping.
He said Sunair was working with the authority.
'They've been incredibly helpful. It's not a combative environment.'
Sunair had charter flights, scheduled passenger services and flight training services, Roberts said.
It flies to Aotea/Great Barrier Island, Gisborne, Hamilton, Kaitāia, Napier, Tauranga, Wairoa, Whakatāne and Whitianga.
'We're still able to provide a significant number of services, albeit with another operator in the interim,' Roberts said today.
'Most of our services are concentrated around Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast.'

The CAA today said it was responding to aviation-related concerns regarding Sunair.
'These concerns relate to maintenance and safety of their aircraft,' a CAA spokesperson said.
'The director of Civil Aviation has suspended the airworthiness certificates for aircraft operated by Sunair Aviation Ltd for safety reasons while we address these concerns.'
They said Sunair normally operated under Civil Aviation Rules Part 119 and under Part 135, which related to commercial helicopters or small aeroplane operations.
'We are working with Sunair Aviation Ltd to address the safety concerns, which will help inform our next steps.'
Aviation Industry Association chief executive Simon Wallace said: 'It's in everyone's best interests that they get flying again once these matters have been resolved'.
In late 2017, the CAA grounded the airline and Sunair updated maintenance records and completed some remedial maintenance activities.
More recently, several regional airlines have described facing multiple pressures.

Sounds Air chief executive Andrew Crawford told RNZ his airline had to ditch its Taupō and Westport routes and sell an aircraft.
But Roberts said he did not feel his regional airline was being picked on.
'There are various levels of operating certificates. You've got the major airlines and then you've got the next level down, like Sounds Air, and then you've got ourselves.
'The demands are appropriate for our levels.'

'Ag drones have been in the background for a couple of years,' he says. 'But we have recently hit a sweet spot where they are able to carry enough liquid and fly long enough to make them genuinely effective. That's when the market really took off.' Drones fill a practical niche between ground-based equipment and helicopters, and their rise is changing how agricultural contractors operate. They can open up access to land that might previously have been too steep or too wet for traditional agricultural machinery, or that require immediate attention and more precision. Fieldays 2025 Drone Zone. Photo / Danielle Zollickhofer 'If you've got 100 hectares to do, a helicopter is always going to be the best choice,' he says. 'And if you've got lots of ground, it is dry, not steep, and you have got plenty of room to move vehicles, then a tractor or a truck is going to be better. New Zealand's geography makes drones particularly well-suited. 'We farm intensively and make the most out of small holdings,' says Simpson. 'We've got a lot of arable land but not a huge amount of it is flat. Even with beef and sheep, we run stock on quite steep country. A drone is a real nice fit.' This is opening up new possibilities. 'Some farmers never dealt with gorse on steep blocks because the only option was spraying with a backpack. A helicopter wasn't economical. Now a drone contractor can do the job at a reasonable rate.' Urgency has also become a significant factor in the technology's uptake. Simpson points to Wairarapa, which has had to deal with heavy rain this year. 'There is a point at which you can't use a vehicle. In the past you might ring a helicopter provider and be told there is a four-week wait. Meanwhile, the fungus gets a foothold. 'A drone provider might be the same price, but they can be there the next day. You can deal with the problem faster and ultimately use less chemicals.' Safety is another driver of demand. 'Why drive a quad bike or a vehicle across a steep hillside when you can instead fly over it with a drone and keep everyone safe?' says Simpson. Given the compliance requirements, most agricultural drone users aren't farmers themselves, but agricultural contractors. 'Since an ag drone is over 25 kilos, you need a certificate with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA),' says Simpson. 'You're also required to deal with the Environmental Protection Authority for chemicals, WorkSafe for health and safety, as well as local councils for regulations – that's a lot for one person in a ute with a drone.' The Agricultural Drone Association has grown to around 60 members – even more since Fieldays – and will play a crucial role in advocating for New Zealand's agricultural drone operators and enhancing skills and knowledge within the industry. 'The association is aimed at drone users,' says Simpson. 'They needed a community, and it means that we can speak to regulators with a collective voice.' Certification wait times have fallen from 18 months to about eight. 'That is a real improvement – but it is still a barrier. If the industry keeps growing, that bottleneck could get worse. 'We'd like to see the regulator continue working closely with industry so we can maintain momentum. This is a great farming technology, and it's important we don't let red tape slow down its potential.' Simpson says that with their speed, precision, and ability to tackle challenging terrain, agricultural drones are on their way to becoming a familiar sight on New Zealand farms – not just a novelty attraction at Fieldays.

Regional flights: 'Everywhere you look, costs are increasing'
Regional aviation will become increasingly unsustainable and ticket prices will continue to rise until the government takes action on aviation system costs, airlines say. Sounds Air announced this week that it will be cutting its Blenheim to Christchurch and Christchurch to Wanaka routes due to spiralling costs. End of Sounds Air route raises concerns Sounds Air chief executive Andrew Crawfords has cited rising levies as a contributing factor to the cuts, even though there is still demand on those routes. "Where are we supposed to get that from? We've just got to pull that on the travelling public." More services will be lost if there is not a reset of the investment structure of our air industry, says the Board of Airline Representatives. Executive director Cath O'Brien told RNZ the news that Sounds was cutting operations was not surprising. "We have seen substantial increases in aviation costs in New Zealand over the last year or so and really there is nowhere else to go for airlines." O'Brien said the country needed to take a responsible look at all of the costs that were currently being levied on the aviation system. "Civil Aviation levies are up, Airways costs have risen by 21 percent potentially, Auckland Airport prices for regional airlines increased by 60 percent between 2023 and 2024 "So everywhere you look, costs are increasing for airlines." She said those costs were "absolutely" being passed on to customers. "So we need to have a look at airport charges, we need to have a look at the Civil Aviation levies, and say how much should these charges be allowed to increase altogether over time. "Because at the moment, all of these individual charges increase one by one all of the time, so every single one airport will increase its charges, the CAA will, Airways will, Customs will. So the effect of all that is that airlines will constantly increase prices over time." She said regional aviation was becoming commercially unsustainable and it was a real challenge for New Zealand as a whole. "The thing is with New Zealand is our aviation system is user pays, so all parts of the system are funded by airlines and their customers, so CAA levies, Customs, biosecurity, air traffic control, airport charges, all of that is funded by airlines. And in other countries that's not the case, but in this country that's where we are." In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority said it was "acutely aware" of the financial pressures smaller operators are facing. It said the new safety levies came into effect on July 1 and were the first adjustment since 2017. "The domestic safety levy has gone from $1.60 per passenger, to $3.92 per passenger, excluding GST. "The CAA works to ensure the travelling public are safe when they fly, and like all government agencies, is also working to ensure that it delivers value for money to the travelling public and the sector to maximum extent practically possible."

Whanganui pilot academy investigation: Some planes cleared to fly as students back facility's future
The CAA has been investigating safety at the academy since May 23, with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) conducting an investigation into the quality of training. The NZICPA's Part 141-Aviation Training Organisation certification, which allows it to conduct aviation training and assessments, is suspended. The CAA extended the suspension for an additional 30 days from June 23. Compain said the academy was taking a phased approach to lifting the suspension. An open letter from trainee pilots Murshid Mohamed, Saanvi Rawal and Shahad Parammal, on behalf of students and parents, said if the academy had been abandoned or shut down, it would have 'left an unfortunate mark' on the perception of aviation training in New Zealand. 'The reputational ripple effect would have been swift, loud and global,' it said. 'Fortunately, that outcome has been avoided.' The letter said students and parents trusted the NZICPA, regulators, leaders and community members guiding the process. 'It is a case study in how a country with world-class aviation values responds to internal challenges without compromising its international credibility.' Students had witnessed a period of deep uncertainty and concern over the past few months, it said. 'What emerged through this difficult time was a powerful example of how New Zealand's aviation ecosystem – from regulators to local leaders – chooses to act, not out of fear or politics, but with clarity, unity and responsibility." Whanganui Council Holdings (Holdings) chair Carolyn van Leuven said discussions about a potential sale were ongoing. Holdings is the council's commercial arm. On July 7, the Chronicle reported five parties were interested in the business. 'We are undertaking due diligence and making a thorough assessment before we narrow down options and bring recommendations back to Whanganui District Council for a decision,' van Leuven said. 'As always, our priorities are to ensure a return to safe, high-quality flight training in Whanganui – and to get the best outcome for Whanganui ratepayers from a difficult situation.' While planes were grounded, funding for students' food and accommodation was coming from a $10.3 million funding package signed off by the council in 2023.
