Sunair says passenger services grounded for 10 days by Civil Aviation Authority

He said the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had some issues with record-keeping.
He said the relevant details were basically deemed not to have been recorded the way the authority wanted.
The airline's certificate of airworthiness was revoked.
'Effectively in layman's terms, it's the WoF [Warrant of Fitness],' Roberts said.
He understood the ban was for 10 consecutive days, finishing on Sunday.
Sunair operated five Piper PA-23 Aztec and three Cessna 172 aircraft.
The Aztec is a twin-engine, six-seater and the 172 is a single-engine, four-seater.
Roberts said the CAA advised Sunair to have 'more robustness and rigour' with the relevant record-keeping.
He said Sunair was working with the authority.
'They've been incredibly helpful. It's not a combative environment.'
Sunair had charter flights, scheduled passenger services and flight training services, Roberts said.
It flies to Aotea/Great Barrier Island, Gisborne, Hamilton, Kaitāia, Napier, Tauranga, Wairoa, Whakatāne and Whitianga.
'We're still able to provide a significant number of services, albeit with another operator in the interim,' Roberts said today.
'Most of our services are concentrated around Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast.'

The CAA today said it was responding to aviation-related concerns regarding Sunair.
'These concerns relate to maintenance and safety of their aircraft,' a CAA spokesperson said.
'The director of Civil Aviation has suspended the airworthiness certificates for aircraft operated by Sunair Aviation Ltd for safety reasons while we address these concerns.'
They said Sunair normally operated under Civil Aviation Rules Part 119 and under Part 135, which related to commercial helicopters or small aeroplane operations.
'We are working with Sunair Aviation Ltd to address the safety concerns, which will help inform our next steps.'
Aviation Industry Association chief executive Simon Wallace said: 'It's in everyone's best interests that they get flying again once these matters have been resolved'.
In late 2017, the CAA grounded the airline and Sunair updated maintenance records and completed some remedial maintenance activities.
More recently, several regional airlines have described facing multiple pressures.

Sounds Air chief executive Andrew Crawford told RNZ his airline had to ditch its Taupō and Westport routes and sell an aircraft.
But Roberts said he did not feel his regional airline was being picked on.
'There are various levels of operating certificates. You've got the major airlines and then you've got the next level down, like Sounds Air, and then you've got ourselves.
'The demands are appropriate for our levels.'

A popular event at the Oamaru Airport has been postponed by the Waitaki District Council without formal explanation, leaving the organisers "disappointed and confused". Waitaki District Council allows hot rod club Whitestone Rodders to use the airport runway twice a year for the Oamaru Drags, where spectators enjoy V8s, imports and motorbikes taking turns speeding down the airport runway during four rounds of quarter-mile action. Now in its 13th year, it attracted up to 150 competitors and 1500 spectators each year and also kept "boy racers" off the street, Whitestone Rodders president Geoff Omnett said. Mr Omnett said it was "unusual the club had not been given any real justification in the decision to halt the big community event". "It's odd, and Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said he and the councillors weren't aware of any such decision being made." Mr Omnett said the council had previously advised them that tarmac resealing, organised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), was to be done and for that reason they were not permitted to run the drags this year. Funds from the event — held in March and November — go towards the club, but also help other organisations that assist the club in running the event, including Air Training Corps and Hato Hone St John, he said. The club was also told the CAA required the council to carry out an aeronautical study to inform decisions about the future of the airport and the use of the runways. Club member and race organiser Kevin Boler said last year the previous council property manager Tania Goldingham informed him there would be no more drag racing at the Oamaru Airport for the "foreseeable future", although he believed the "door was still open". Mr Kircher said he was unaware of any discussion between the hot rod club and the council regarding the tarmac. "There was talk around the impact that drag racing has on the runway, but it hasn't been a decision by the governance team to cease that event," Mr Kircher said. The council's plans to reseal the airport tarmac had been "put off" as they considered "cheaper options", including the possibility of using a new SteelGuard surface similar to the recent resurfacing of Alexandra Airport's runway, which came in at $470,000 — about half the cost of earlier estimates. Club committee member Murray Mackenzie said an email from the council property manager last month that asked the club to remove their event signs at the airport and all of their belongings in a storage shed had been upsetting. "We are disappointed — we spent $1500 of the club's money to repair all the rotten weatherboards at the council's request, and then six weeks later they tell us we can't race here any more. We're like 'what's going on?'," Mr Mackenzie said. Mr Omnett said they were aware the airport was busier with New Zealand Airline Academy flights "but their planes don't land on the tarmac, they land on the grass". Mr Kircher said if the impact of the drags on the tarmac was an issue, they could look to other solutions such as "moving the race start area to a different part of the runway". Waitaki District Council director of strategy, performance and design Joanne O'Neill said a meeting was set for August 11 with club members, council property managers and new airport manager Matt Sisson. "We look forward to having a constructive conversation about the future of drag racing in Waitaki, given the increasing use of the Oamaru Airport," she said. Originally organised by the North Otago Car Club in the early 1970s as a single-car timed run down the flattest section of Seven Mile Rd, drag-racing in the area had a long history and had evolved over time, Mr Boler said.

Government must step up to save vital regional air routes

This follows its withdrawal of its Wellington to Taupō and Wellington to Westport routes last year. Loss of regional air routes rips out lifelines for our communities – literally, in the case of Blenheim to Christchurch. This is a critical healthcare link for Marlborough people needing specialist treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and day surgery in Christchurch. As of September 28, that's gone and they face an about four-hour drive, one way. Regional air services are the backbone of connectivity for New Zealand, not just healthcare and holidaymakers but business, education, freight and emergency response capability. The Kaikōura earthquake and Cyclone Gabrielle showed us just how vital these regional air routes and carriers are in times of crisis, delivering vital supplies and medical care to cut-off communities. With extreme weather events now part of life, they are becoming even more important. Yet our regional carriers that serve smaller centres, supplementing Air New Zealand's domestic network, are struggling. They face a growing burden of compliance costs across a range of government agencies that intersect with the industry. This also includes other government charges such as ACC levies and airport landing fees. Alongside the CAA's hikes, government air traffic control agency Airways New Zealand this week set a 6% average annual price increase. These hikes amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for regional carriers, on top of fee increases from airports and growing operational and maintenance costs. The assumption is that operators can pass the cost on to the passenger, but there comes a point where that's not feasible. This leads to route cuts, aircraft sales and staff losses and once gone, these are very difficult to bring back. The Government says it wants to partner with the industry to 'build an aviation sector that continues to be a pillar of New Zealand's economy and a lifeline for our communities'. Its goal is to transition the CAA into a 100% industry-funded regulatory body (it is already 90% industry-funded) and rely on market forces to lift the sector and support regional communities. This is wrong. As with Crown funding for critical infrastructure such as rail and roading, the Government plays a role in supporting access to safe and secure air services domestically and internationally. This is in the wider public interest and good for New Zealand. There are at least 30 countries around the world that support regional airlines in different ways. In Australia, the Government has made a strong commitment to support access to safe and secure regional air services with a package of measures. This includes access to concessional loans, something that has been floated here and is part of a possible solution. Aviation services are essential to our regional communities and New Zealanders deserve access to them now and into the future. If the Government really wants to support regional connectivity and deliver its economic growth plan, it urgently needs to lend a helping hand to our regional carriers so they can keep these routes in the air.

Co-chief executive Leighton Roberts said it was responding to customer demand. "More and more people either own crypto or are interested in doing so. As the asset class has matured, we've seen it become more prominent in both institutional and personal investment portfolios. "At Sharesies, we see an opportunity to make crypto investment more straightforward and less overwhelming for New Zealanders -whether they are new to crypto or seasoned investors who want to reduce complexity." Sharesies customers can sign up to a waiting list to get early access to trading, expected to be in August. Roberts said Sharesies would look to remove some of the complexity associated with crypto wallets and keys, and would partner with a leading crypto platform to allow retail customers to be able to buy, sell and hold crypto. It was expected that leading crypto brands such as Bitcoin and Ethereum would be available. Roberts accepted that crypto could be highly volatile and carried higher risk. "As always, we'll be taking an educational approach with a number of initiatives planned to assist customers. We acknowledge that crypto may not be for everyone, but we want to provide people with choice." Bitcoin has ranged between US$77,000 (NZ$129,000) and US$120,000 (NZ$201,000) so far this year.
