Norwegian ski jumpers suspended over 'cheat' suits

BBC News12-03-2025
Norwegian Olympic medal-winning ski jumpers Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang and three team officials have been provisionally suspended for using manipulated suits to "cheat the system".The pair were disqualified during last Saturday's men's large hill event at the World Ski Championships in Trondheim, Norway after an equipment inspection.Lindvik, 26, had originally finished second while 29-year-old compatriot Forfang came fourth. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) said Lindvik and Forfang are temporarily barred from participating in events under their auspices, as well as those organised by a national ski association, while an investigation is ongoing.Three Norwegian team officials - including head coach Magnus Brevik - have also been suspended by the FIS.Norwegian Ski Federation general manager Jan-Erik Aalbu told a news conference that a reinforced thread was put in the jumpsuits of Lindvik and Forfang."This was done knowing that this is not within the regulations, but with a belief that it would not be discovered by FIS's equipment controller," Aalbu said."The way I consider this - we have cheated. We have tried to cheat the system. That is unacceptable."
Brevik and equipment manager Adrian Livelten were suspended by the Norwegian Ski Federation this week.Brevik told local media he was "terribly sorry for what we did" while Livelten apologised for the situation Lindvik and Forfang "have found themselves in through no fault of their own"."What we did with the suits should never have happened and is an action I will regret for the rest of my life," Livelten said."We have always done what we can to optimise the suits within the regulations, but cheating is completely unacceptable."The FIS has seized all Norwegian jumpsuits from the World Ski Championships for reinspection.FIS secretary general Michel Vion said the situation was "disturbing and disappointing", and the investigation would "leave no stone unturned" to ensure "respect and fairness prevail"."Ski jumping is a discipline grounded in precision, in which equipment plays an important role," Vion added."This is why, year after year, we have a strong focus on reviewing equipment regulations and controls, to ensure that competitors are on a level playing field."Lindvik won gold in the men's large hill individual at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, while Forfang claimed a silver medal at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang in the normal hill individual.

‘We'll definitely be back': Golf fans vow return to Northern Ireland as Scheffler claims Claret Jug at The Open

The total attendance for the championship week was projected at 278,000, according to the competition's organisers R&A. Tourism NI indicated that just under half of ticket holders (roughly 140,000 people) were residents of Northern Ireland. Players from 31 different countries competed at Royal Portrush, and among the remaining international visitors, approximately 20% came from the United States, while others hailed from the UK, Republic of Ireland, continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Thanakron Tandavas, from Bangkok, is an avid golfer himself. He actually won first place in a competition in Thailand, after playing a golf course simulator that exactly matched Royal Portrush, with the prize being a free ticket to attend The 153rd Open. He said he 'definitely' hopes to come back to Northern Ireland and play on the real Royal Portrush course in a couple of years. 'We don't have links courses in Thailand, and the weather here is much nicer and more brutal as well,' he said. 'It's really windy. There's a lot of slope and the grass is much harder than what we have. We actually played in London once at the London Golf Club. That itself is already hard. This is much, much, much harder for sure. It's going to be challenging for sure. This is our first time in the UK and first time in Northern Ireland. 'We spent our last night in Newry and it was amazing.' Rick and DeLynn Villareal, from Dallas, also praised the quality and ferocity of this island's golf courses — but another highlight for them was the local cuisine, particularly fish and chips. 'It's a beautiful country. We've been able to experience a lot of it, and we have played golf three times since we've been here,' Rick explained. 'The courses are incredible… It's completely different from any place you will play. 'American courses are a lot more manicured. You don't hardly see a tree on the courses here, right? We see tons of trees on the American courses, but the rough is really tough [here]. 'I mean, when you get off the fairway, it's an experience like you've never had before. 'You hit a ball in American courses, you'll hit a tree, it'll fall down, you can find it most of the time. 'If you hit your ball right or left of the fairway into the gorse [here], you'll have a hard time finding it. 'I think it's very affordable, as far as the other countries we go to. We were in Italy for 17 days last year and it was kind of expensive. But here, not only did you feel like you got your money's worth for what you did, but the food was outstanding. And the people — the people have been just unbelievable.' Norwegian fan Linn Anitam agreed, and especially praised Char+Mash, the Odyssey's newest restaurant in Belfast, for its beef. She and her party have been staying at The Flint hotel, which has cost around £800 for four nights. 'It's my first time in Northern Ireland. We would absolutely love to come back,' she said. 'We love the atmosphere and the people and everything. It's a really nice place. 'We went to Royal Liverpool a couple of years ago, but [Royal Portrush] is so compact. I think the distance isn't so big, so it's easy to go around and watch the players.' Craig Hodgson and Kent MacInnis, who are from Winnipeg in Canada, are friends with former Belfast Giants captain Shane Johnson, who continued to live in Northern Ireland with his family after he retired from professional ice hockey. Craig and Kent have been staying with Shane this week, just outside of Belfast, and they hope to make future golf trips here a tradition for their 'guys' trips'. Kent said: 'We did Dublin and the Guinness factory. 'In Northern Ireland we went to Donaghadee and did a nice little historical tour of downtown Belfast, about the history of the Troubles. 'And then, of course, on a guys' trip, we did a nice night out and hit the hotspots of the [Cathedral Quarter], which, in my opinion, is the best place I've ever partied in my life. 'It's unbelievable. For anyone who has never done it before, it is the best. I haven't partied that hard in a town in my life before.' He added that Portrush is 'a beautiful seaside town, truly breathtaking, especially when we're getting fine weather'. 'This golf course is truly one of a kind. It's the scenic views absolutely everywhere, the difficulty of the course, mixed with the Northern Irish people, who are just so friendly. It's been such a great time,' Kent, who has been to NI just once before, continued. For Craig, this is his first trip to the region. He said that, '100%, we'll definitely be back in five or six years when Portrush hosts The Open again'. 'We are excited to see Rory' - Shannon Aitken from Canada Chief executive Mark Darbon affirmed on Wednesday that R&A 'love' Royal Portrush. 'And one of the reasons we love this venue is that we've got sites to construct the infrastructure that we require, but we've also got so many natural vantage points to showcase the wonderful Dunluce links and its Causeway coastline,' he said. 'We look forward to coming here for many years to come.'

Napheesa Collier's record-breaking performance leads her team to victory in WNBA All-Star Game

INDIANAPOLIS — Napheesa Collier made a statement with her record play on the court and the players made one with warmup shirts for the WNBA All-Star Game. Collier scored a record 36 points to help her team beat Team Clark 151-131 in the WNBA All-Star Game that was devoid of defense but full of 4-point shots. This record offensive effort came a year after the league's annual exhibition game was a competitive contest that pitted the U.S Olympic team against WNBA All-Stars. The game capped off a weekend where negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement took center stage. Players wore T-shirts while warming up before the game that said 'Pay us what you owe us.' 'The players are taking this seriously, I think it sends a really strong message that we're standing really firm in certain areas that we feel really strong that we need to improve on. I think we got the message across,' said Collier, who was named the game's MVP. As she waited to get her trophy the crowd chanted 'Pay them more' and All-Star Brittney Sykes held up a sign saying 'Pay the Players.' Captain Caitlin Clark was unable to play for her team because of a groin injury she suffered earlier this week. She still served as ambassador for the weekend. Known for her deep logo 3-pointers, Clark would have loved a chance at the 4-point shot that was added to this game which was 28-feet from the basket. Both teams took advantage of the deep shot en route to the record-setting offensive night. They combined to hit 20 of the shots on 65 attempts. The 151 points scored by Team Collier broke the mark put up by Team Stewart of 143 in 2023 for the most in an All-Star Game. Collier's point total broke Arike Ogunbowale's previous record of 34 points scored last year. The combined total of 282 also surpassed the previous high total of 270 set in 2023. While there was little defense played, both teams challenged plays in the fourth quarter with the game not in doubt. One was successful and one wasn't. The game also featured rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen making up the largest rookie contingent at the game since 2011. Citron and Iriafen were on Team Clark, and Bueckers was a starter for Napheesa Collier's team. The replacements Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever and Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces were announced earlier in the day as starters for Team Clark replacing Clark and Satou Sabally of Phoenix. Mitchell received a loud ovation from the fans who were happy to have another one of their players in the starting lineup. Young didn't actually start as Gabby Williams took her spot as a starter. Young injured her hip in Las Vegas' last game before All-Star weekend. New rules Besides the 4-point shot, the game also included a 20-second shot clock instead of the normal 24 and the ability for teams to substitute during live play. There also were no free throws shot — not that there usually are many in an All-Star Game — until the final two minutes of the game. Instead players were automatically awarded the points. The only free throws were shot was by Skylar Diggins with 1:01 left in the game. She made both. Diggins also had the first triple-double in All-Star history. All four rules had been used at some point during previous All-Star Games, but not all in the same one. Stars put on show for celebrities The All-Star Game brought the stars out in Indianapolis. Rapper GloRilla performed at halftime while musicians Common and Jennifer Hudson sat courtside near WNBA legends Lisa Leslie and Tamika Catchings. Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton sat in a suite and got the loudest ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the videoboard.

The Open: McIlroy plots repeat of 2022 six-shot miracle win over Scheffler... as Lowry goes low and Sergio snaps driver

6 minutes ago Back. To. Back. Shane Lowry has started to put some round together as he follows up the birdie on seven with another putt from the fringe from 20 feet for birdie at the eighth! That's four birdies in his last six holes and the 2019 champion is back to where he started the week at E! 8 minutes ago Watch: Sergio's snapped! Sergio Garcia parred the first today to stay on level for the tournament but has snapped his driver out of frustration following a poor tee shot on the second. The Spaniard will now have to complete his final round one club short... as he's not allowed replace it. Oops! He's been following Rory all week but has come out this morning to track Shane before the leaders head out on course. "I've had the hair for three days but I'll probably dye it back to normal tomorrow!" he grins. 18 minutes ago Famous follower Glentoran captain and Northern Ireland star Jess Foy is out following Shane Lowry as he delights the crowd once more and evokes a roar as he holes out for birdie from off the back of the seventh green for his third in three holes! He's back to +1! 34 minutes ago Adam McKendry International tournament You forget just how popular this tournament is until you look at the crowd and see people wandering around in gear from all around the world, and one woman following the Lowry group is enthusiastically waving a Danish flag after every shot Jacob Skov Olesen hits. "Lad os gå, Jacob!" she yells. Well, I don't speak Danish, but she yelled something and that looks like what it sounded like to me. As we walk up to the sixth green, a woman passes us with a Norwegian flag looking to get a glimpse of Viktor Hovland in the group behind. All on the north coast of Northern Ireland. Mad. 41 minutes ago "Aw noooo" Shane Lowry can hole out for birdie from 183 yards but he also can't from 19 feet as his birdie putt on the par-four fifth stays above ground. You're always guaranteed a reaction from Lowry and he gives us one as he stays +2 after a disappointing bogey following a good drive. Rory McIlroy beating Scheffler from six shots back? It's happened before... I bring to you another story of hope on this fine Sunday morning. It's late August 2022, and Rory McIlroy is going into the final round of the Tour Championship, six shots behind one Scottie Scheffler. The American has opened the week with rounds of 65 / 66 / 66. He's looking unbeatable. Then on Sunday at East Lake, he opens with a bogey - and follows it up with two more at the fourth and the sixth. A birdie at eight gave him only a momentary reprieve, as he dropped a further shot at 16 to card a three-over-par final round 73. It was a day on which he hit just half the greens in regulations, and only slightly more fairways. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy followed up his Saturday 63 with a four-under-par 66 on Sunday to complete a seven-shot swing and win by one. McIlroy also started with bogey, but had carded four birdies by the turn to reel Scheffler in to just a single shot between them. Two birdies on the back (and one drop shot) was enough to get the job done. After the tournament, Rory apologised to Scottie's parents, but received a gracious response. 'I'm sorry,' he said to Scott and Diane Scheffler. 'He deserves it. He's had an unbelievable year.' Scheffler's father repied: 'So did you. Good playing.' 'Congrats,' added Diane. 'Good job. Great job.' 'What a week, what a day,' stated McIlroy. 'I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this. He's a hell of a competitor. It was an honour to battle with him." So Scheffler may look rock solid this week so far, but he looked that way at East Lake in 2022 as well... It's not quite over yet. Rory McIlroy hails PGA Tour as 'best place to play' after shock £15m Tour Championship win at East Lake Rory McIlroy has won the end-of-season Tour Championship for the third time in his career, with a sublime fourth round display. 59 minutes ago Adam McKendry Watch: Shane Lowry holes out from 183-yards Lowry thinks he's scrambling just to make par on the fourth after he finds the fairway bunker off the tee and has to splash out... but he holes his third shot from 183 yards! Steady on Shane Shane Lowry proving that the par-three third is definitely a birdie chance as he takes aim, goes straight at the pin that's tucked behind the mound on the left... and sticks it to a foot! Kick in birdie, back to +3! In the group behind, Viktor Hovland has received the luckiest break I have ever seen, pulling his approach shot into the par-five second well left (as in a good 20 yards left), but it clangs off the scoreboard by the green and back into the fairway! Today 08:24 AM Adam McKendry Shane's struggles continue The par on the first was a solid way to start for the Irishman but he's in trouble on the second despite driving it straight down the middle. He's yanked his second shot into the fescue down the left and his first chip doesn't have the mustard on it and rolls back into the rough. The follow-up chip is good and should be enough to secure the par, but he can't convert the short putt and the crowd sighs as he drops back to +4 early doors. "F**k sake," Lowry fumes. The crowd laughs. He doesn't. Today 08:13 AM Gareth Hanna Some Bryson-spotting, anyone? Bryson DeChambeau reveals famous north coast landmark he's planning to visit during his time at Royal Portrush Golfing giant Bryson DeChambeau was looking forward to a 'fun' experience visiting the Giant's Causeway after shooting a three-under-par 68 in his third round at Royal Portrush. Today 08:11 AM Gareth Hanna The day's first birdie on the board It's a bit of a par-fest out there in the early groups, just one bogey and now one birdie on the cards. It's come for world number 31 Andrew Novak at the first, draining a 13-footer down the slope to the centrally-placed pin. Today 08:03 AM Shane on his way The 2019 champion is teeing off a lot earlier on Sunday this time around than he did six years ago, which will frustrate him, but the Offaly man says he's going to make a point of enjoying himself today so this could be a fun round to go and watch. He's just teed off alongside Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen, who shared the lead after day one, and it looks like the bulk of the early morning crowd are going to be tagging along with him. Can he at least make a charge up the leaderboard and secure a strong finish? He hasn't finished better than 42nd in the Majors this year but hopefully he can improve on that today. Today 07:57 AM Holey moly Another look at the stats on which hole the players are struggling with and which holes they're making hay on. The toughest and easiest holes are unchanged from yesterday, with the 14th causing all sorts of problems playing 0.338 strokes over-par this week, while the short par-five 12th is comfortably the easiest hole on the course as it has only crept closer to the half-a-stroke under-par mark at 0.463 strokes under-par. It's the definition of a par-four-and-a-half. There's some small changes in the rankings below that, with an easy pin position on 11 yesterday moving it to third in the list below the fourth in the toughest hole rankings, with the first and 16th swapping in fourth and fifth. On the easiest side, the par-five seventh played downwind which led to more eagles on Saturday, so it leaps up to second in the rankings above the par-five second, with the driveable par-four fifth and downhill par-four 17th staying put at fourth and fifth in the rankings respectively. He's saying what every other player in the field is thinking as Scottie Scheffler holds a four shot lead going into today's final round. Scheffler has never blown a 54-hole major lead, though.
