Surprising item balancing on Aussie driver's roof baffles police: 'Unbelievable'

Yahooa day ago
A police officer was forced to do a double take while on patrol in a coastal city last month after he spotted a baffling item precariously balanced on the roof of a driver's car.
Bodycam footage of the stop shows the puzzled officer greet the motorist one afternoon in Albany, Western Australia, before pointing out the glaring red flag sitting just centimetres above his head.
Video of the random breath test has gone viral after it was released by the WA Police Force on Friday, and while authorities have made their feelings about the incident clear, thousands of viewers couldn't resist cracking a joke.
'Some people leave their phone on the roof. This guy? His beer bottle,' the force captioned the clip. 'Nothing says 'pull me over' quite like mobile happy hour.
'42,599.73 hours spent patrolling the roads. 707 traffic charges. One beer bottle found on roof,' officers added. 'Let's keep the drinks in the fridge, not on the freeway.'

Aussie driver blows more than seven times the legal BAC
Police spotted the vehicle with the beer bottle on the roof at around 5pm on June 9, a spokesperson for WA Police told Yahoo News.
In the footage, the officer asks the driver if he had consumed any alcohol that day. 'Not this morning, no,' the man responds, prompting the cop to point out the glass hitchhiker.
'Oh,' the driver says before blowing 0.367 — more than seven times the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit.
The motorist, who said the bottle had been on his car roof since the prior night, was arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, the police spokesperson told Yahoo. He appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court on July 6, where he was issued a $4,000 fine and had his licence disqualified for three years.
Many Aussies have praised the police officer online for doing a 'good job', while others wondered how the beer bottle had stayed upright. 'This is the new 'waiting for a mate',' one woman commented.
'How is he still upright?' someone else said. 'Unbelievable,' a third person wrote.

Two killed in horror plane crash

Two men have been killed after a light plane crashed into a paddock before catching on fire in Queensland's Toowoomba region. Early investigations indicate the aircraft crashed near Oakey Cooyar Rd at Devon Park, about two hours from Brisbane, shortly after 3pm on Sunday. A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said four crews rushed to the scene just before 3.20pm and extinguished a blaze from the plane, which had caught fire. Queensland Police said the two male occupants were declared deceased at the scene and that Forensic Crash Unit were investigating the circumstances around the incident. They will assist investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who confirmed on Sunday afternoon they would investigating the crash. The ATSB identified the aircraft as a twin turboprop Reims Cessna F406, and that officers were being deployed from Brisbane and Canberra. The investigators, who specialise in aircraft operations and maintenance, will conduct a range of 'evidence-gathering activities', including site and wreckage examination. 'Investigators will also seek to interview involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data,' the ATSB said in a statement. 'As well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.' Anyone with footage of the aircraft at 'any phase of the flight' or following the crash were urged to contact the ATSB. A report will also be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Warning over children playing in derelict building

A warning about the dangers of going into derelict buildings has been issued by police in part of Leicestershire. Neighbourhood officers said they had received reports of children getting into a sealed building in the Greenhill area of Coalville. On visiting the scene they said they found people inside, who were identified and notifications will be sent to their parents. North West Leicestershire's policing team said: "Many derelict buildings are unstable, with unsafe floors, electrical works and broken glass and other hazards." They added: "Whilst this behaviour may seem like fun we would like to remind anybody that is thinking of having this sort of 'fun' there are many potential dangers of entering abandoned and derelict buildings. "Some buildings may have been empty for a long time and not a safe place to enter. "Could parents please speak with their children about this danger." Criminals plotting mass killings to be detained earlier under new law

Police and courts are to be given powers to deal with suspects believed to be planning mass killings, the Home Secretary has confirmed. Yvette Cooper said the new tools will enable the criminal justice system to "close the gap" between terror suspects, who face life imprisonment for planning attacks, and non-ideological individuals. Police will be empowered to apprehend them before attacks are carried out. In an interview, Ms Cooper told BBC Radio 4's State of Terror series: 'There is a gap in the law around the planning of mass attacks that can be just as serious (as terrorism) in their implications for communities, their impact, the devastation that they can cause and the seriousness of the crime. 'We will tighten legislation so that that is taken as seriously as terrorism.' Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said police would be given powers to apprehend suspects before they carry out attacks (PA Wire) She said legislation would be similar to that which allows police to arrest terror suspects for steps taken to prepare for an attack, such as research, which is not currently available without links to an ideological cause. Ms Cooper added: 'We've seen cases of growing numbers of teenagers potentially radicalising themselves online and seeing all kinds of extremist material online in their bedrooms. 'We have to make sure that the systems can respond while not taking our eye off the ball of the more long-standing ideological threats.' Southport attacker Axel Rudakubana, who killed three girls at a dance class, is among the individuals who could have been covered by the legislation. Axel Rudakubana was given a life sentence in January, with a minimum term of 52 years – one of the highest minimum terms on record – for murdering Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport on July 29 last year. The 18-year-old also attempted to murder eight other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, as well as class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.
