AIADMK supports State govt.'s efforts on Keeladi issue: Edappadi K. Palaniswami

The Hindu3 days ago
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday said his party supported the efforts of the State government with regard to archaeological excavations.
After visiting Keeladi Museum here, Mr. Palaniswami said he, however, could not comment on the ongoing dialogue between the State and the Central governments on publishing the Keeladi report on the initial phase of excavation conducted by Archaeological Survey of India as he was unclear about what the Centre had asked.
The statement was regarding the Centre's direction to ASI archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna to revise the report on Keeladi excavation and his subsequent refusal to do so.
The former Chief Minister said the archaeological excavations at Keeladi were carried out during the AIADMK regime. 'It was during the AIADMK regime that the Keeladi excavations first began in 2014. The first phase of the study, led by Amarnath Ramakrishnan, started in 2015.'
The excavations were conducted in the subsequent years. Above all, it was former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who laid the foundation for a grand museum worth ₹12.5 crore to display the artefacts found then. During the third phase of excavation in 2017-18, as many as 5,820 artefacts were unearthed. Further, in 2018, six samples were sent to a laboratory in Florida, USA, and it was confirmed that the Keeladi civilisation dated back to 6th century BC.
'When I spoke in the Assembly in 2018, I mentioned that the Keeladi study plays a significant role in highlighting our traditional glory. We inaugurated an exhibition of 6,720 archaeological artifacts on the campus of Madurai World Tamil Sangam,' he added.
In 2020, some of the artifacts were displayed at Chennai Book Fair, but today, some were politicising Keeladi for gaining political mileage, he further said.

Nagaland CM Rio bats for permanent school infrastructure

Kohima, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday said the state must move away from temporary school structures and focus on building permanent, quality infrastructure to ensure long-term educational progress. Nagaland CM Rio bats for permanent school infrastructure He was speaking during the virtual inauguration of 51 school infrastructure projects funded under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, held at the chief minister's residential complex here. The projects include 15 new school buildings, additional classrooms in 17 schools, 18 teachers' quarters, and one residential hostel, spread across various districts, a DIPR statement here said. Calling it a "significant step" in strengthening the education sector, Rio expressed gratitude to the Centre for its continued support and praised the State Samagra Shiksha Mission, led by Mission Director L. Jamithung Lotha, for effectively implementing the projects across the state. The CM said despite the state's difficult geographical terrain, particularly in remote areas, efforts were being made to consistently improve school infrastructure. He said, "While infrastructure is critical, it is not enough on its own. Community participation and ownership are equally vital to ensure proper maintenance and effective use of the facilities." Rio also stressed that quality education is central to development. "It empowers citizens, drives economic growth, creates opportunities, and helps build a responsible and prosperous society," he said. He urged all stakeholders to work together to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for students' holistic development. Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, shared detailed statistics on government school infrastructure, stating that of the 16,087 rooms in government schools, 13,767 are used for instructional purposes, while the rest serve as laboratories, libraries, and teachers' rooms. Yhome emphasised that funding under Samagra Shiksha has been instrumental in addressing infrastructure gaps and said the department's goal of bringing back one lakh out-of-school children by 2030. This, he said, would improve both educational outcomes and economic conditions for families. In his introductory remarks, State Mission Director L. Jamithung Lotha outlined the objectives of the scheme, which integrates previous centrally-sponsored schemes—Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan , Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan , and Teacher Education —in line with the National Education Policy 2020. He highlighted key interventions such as school building development, provision of textbooks and uniforms, teacher training, and smart classrooms, while also raising implementation challenges. The virtual event was also attended by MLA A. Pongshi Phom; Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mohammad Ali Shihab, Commissioner and Secretary for School Education and SCERT, Kevileno Angami, and officials from various departments. Congress trying to defame Centre over BC reservation issue: Kishan Reddy

BJP senior leader and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has reiterated that the Congress government's attempt to provide 42% reservation to the Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies would not at all benefit the BCs, as they would only get 32% reservation since the proposed BC reservations include 10% Muslim quota. He accused the Congress government of resorting to appeasement politics for political gains. Addressing a protest organised by the BJP OBC Morcha at Dharna Chowk on Saturday, Mr. Reddy said the reservations would indeed be around 32% for the BCs, as 34% reservations in local bodies were already in implementation before the BRS regime in the State. 'The Congress government has not completed the process to implement 42% reservations for the BCs. Instead, it's trying to defame the BJP and the Centre,' he said. Former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao also reduced the reservations to 23% from 34% in the local bodies for BCs. Now, Mr. Revanth Reddy is also trying to reduce the reservations, he alleged. 'The people of Telangana are observing Revanth Reddy's anti-BC actions. Despite being in power in the State and at the Centre for many years, the Congress has not conducted a caste census. To do justice to the BCs, the Centre, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will conduct a caste census along with the population census. If the Revanth Reddy government is really sincere about the welfare of BCs, I demand that it offer 42% reservation to the BCs as announced,' he added. BJP State president N. Ramchander Rao also slammed the Congress for its attempts to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 6 over the issue of BC Bills. Mr. Rao said it is the responsibility of the Congress government to implement the two Bills passed by the Telangana Assembly in March this year, which provide 42% reservation to BCs in local bodies, education and employment. BJP senior leaders, including MP Eatala Rajender and MP (Rajya Sanbha) R. Krishanaiah, attended the meeting.

Mani Shankar Aiyar Fires 'Op Sindoor' Broadside At Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi: Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has taken a swipe at party MP Shashi Tharoor's foreign visits as part of India's global outreach to inform other nations of Pakistan's role behind the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. Mr Aiyar said none of the 33 countries where India sent MPs to present the country's views on Pakistan's state policy of sponsoring terrorism had blamed that country for the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists. Mr Aiyar took particular aim at Mr Tharoor, who the Centre had selected for the delegation to the US, despite the Congress not recommending his name. "None of the 33 countries that Tharoor and his team visited blamed Pakistan for the Pahalgam terror attack. Neither the UN nor the United States have held Pakistan responsible," Mr Aiyar told news agency IANS. Mr Tharoor is a career diplomat who has served with the UN before he returned to India and joined politics. "We are the only ones saying that Pakistan is behind it, but no one is willing to believe us. We haven't been able to present any evidence that convinces people about which Pakistani agency carried out this act," Mr Aiyar said. "Shashi Tharoor and his friends can roam around as much as they want, but apart from Israel, no one else has said that Pakistan was behind the Pahalgam terror attack. Everyone is condemning terrorism, but no one is willing to blame Pakistan," he added. Mr Aiyar alleged the government lacked the courage to call out misinformation from global powers, including US President Donald Trump. "Trump has claimed several times that the US brokered the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, but our government is not ready to say that he is lying. The government does not dare to speak the truth," the Congress leader said. India launched Operation Sindoor in early May to destroy nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack. Three of the terrorists who participated in the Pahalgam attack were killed earlier this week in an encounter with the security forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday came down heavily on the Congress-led Opposition for "raising questions" about Operation Sindoor "instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by our armed forces". He also alleged the Congress had been "soft" on insurgency while in power, and tried to "frame innocent people" by spinning the theory of "saffron terror" because of "vote bank" considerations. "Recently, we had discussions in both houses of parliament on Operation Sindoor. Both debates lasted for 16 hours each. The Opposition, which had started off on a belligerent note, was left dumbstruck," Mr Singh said at an event in Delhi.
