Financial crisis at Sheffield Wednesday could see Northern Ireland goalkeeper join Premier League club
It's understood that the club hierarchy are keen to retain Charles as his value is expected to grow exponentially in the coming seasons.
However, desperate times may call for desperate measures, and Premier League West Ham are monitoring the situation.
Glasgow giants Rangers are also keen on Charles. The Ibrox club's goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo spent two years in a similar position at Wednesday. Bibbo – who played four games for Ards during the 1995/96 season – is a fan of the 20 year-old shot stopper.
Charles has played eight times for Northern Ireland and is likely to be Michael O'Neill's starting goalkeeper for the forthcoming World Cup Qualifying campaign.
Pierce's older brother Shea Charles has 27 caps for Northern Ireland and remains on the books of Southampton.

Chelsea to sell £53m midfield duo after just five Premier League starts
Chelsea are on the verge of selling off two midfielders, who cost the club a combined £53million, to Premier League rivals. Enzo Maresca has been very busy this summer transfer window, splashing over £243m on eight new players, with Jorrel Hato the latest name through the door. There could be yet more incomings with the club working on a deal for RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, while they maintain an interest in Manchester United wantaway Alejandro Garnacho. But the Blues still need to offload several stars who have no future at the club, following on from the sales of Noni Madueke, Joao Felix and Djordje Petrovic. Additionally, striker Armando Broja and defender Bashir Humphreys have left to join Burnley and it seems the Turf Moor club are not done raiding Stamford Bridge yet. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. The Athletic report that the Clarets have reached an agreement to sign Lesley Ugochukwu, just two years after the defensive midfielder moved to Chelsea for over £23m. Ugochukwu made just 12 Premier League appearances in his debut season, only three of which were starts, and was loaned out to Southampton last year. The 21-year-old was a shining light in the relegated team but deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca despite having five years left on his contract. And he won't be the only midfielder leaving west London this summer, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Everton are close to agreeing a deal to sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The 26-year-old followed Maresca from Leicester to Chelsea last summer but was almost immediately linked with a transfer after struggling for game time at the Bridge. While he helped win the Conference League and Club World Cup, the £30m signing was handed just two Premier League starts and has been the subject of interest from multiple top-flight teams. More Trending Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel recently urged Dewsbury-Hall to find a new team this summer, saying: 'He did well in the Championship with Leicester, but this is Chelsea Football Club. 'He needs to go somewhere he can play and improve. Is he a good player? Yes. Is he a Chelsea player? Definitely not.' While the fee offered by Everton is not known, it is said the deal is not related to their pursuit of Southampton's Tyler Dibling, with David Moyes keen to sign both Englishmen. Sky Sports report that the Saints have rejected the Toffees' second bid for Dibling worth an initial £35m plus £8m. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Ryan Reynolds' record Wrexham transfer suddenly runs into issue as manager speaks out
Wrexham's £7.5m bid for Ipswich winger Nathan Broadhead could be in doubt as the Tractor Boys hesitate due to injuries and transfer interest in other attacking players. Wrexham's club record transfer bid to sign Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town appears to have hit a major snag. Reports emerged last week that the Red Dragons, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, had made an approach for the winger in a deal worth £7.5million. All signs at the time indicated that talks over bringing the 27-year-old Wales international to the Racececourse Ground were progressing well as Wrexham look to bolster their squad ready for life in the Championship. However, the waters have now been muddied after Broadhead was used as a second half substitute in the Tractor Boys' 3-0 pre-season victory against Auxerre on Saturday. Ipswich have yet to give the green light for the move and are claimed to be reluctant at present as another of their wingers, Omari Hutchinson, is being targeted by Brentford. Meanwhile, forward Jaden Philogene suffered an ankle injury during the friendly in France, further reducing manager Kieran McKenna's attacking options. It means Wrexham's hopes of completing a deal for Broadhead are hanging in the balance, despite McKenna acknowledging the player's affection for the Championship new boys. Broadhead hails from Bangor, North Wales, and was part of Wrexham's academy during the early stages of his career before later joining Everton. Speaking after the Auxerre game, McKenna said: "I think it's well-publicised that there's interest there from Wrexham, which is a club that he has an affinity to. But he also has a great affinity to Ipswich and he's been a really, really important player for us. "I think in all these situations as a club, especially moving between divisions, there's always going to be probably more movement and more live situations than you would want in pre-season. "I think when other clubs want our players, it's also something we should be proud of because it's probably not that long ago that there wasn't as much interest in Ipswich players as there is now. "Nathan's an Ipswich player and so long as he's here, he'll be an important player for us. We're, of course, lighter in those areas than we want to be anyway, especially after today." "I think what's important as a club, as a staff, as a group, a squad, with the players, with the supporters, is that we stick together and know that there are going to be situations throughout the month of August." Broadhead joined Ipswich from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023 and played a key role in their back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship. However, he was restricted to just seven Premier League starts last season as the Tractor Boys were relegated from the top flight. He has bagged 23 goals in 83 appearances for the club in total, but is now in the final year of his contract, with Wrexham reportedly keen on securing his services. Mikel Merino thinks Liverpool could be signing an incredible player as 'agreement reached'
As Liverpool continue to look for opportunities to bolster their squad, some opinions from Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino on one of their targets have emerged Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino believes Liverpool would be signing a top quality player if they buy Real Madrid ace Rodrygo. The Reds have been chasing Alexander Isak, but Newcastle United have held firm despite a mega-money offer. The Magpies recently rebuffed a bid worth £120m for the Swede's services. Reports have claimed Arne Slot's side are not planning to make a second bid but are monitoring the situation between Isak and the Magpies, with the player recently returning to the club. The striker had spent a period of time training alone at the facilities of his former club Real Sociedad, after he did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour. However, reports from Brazil have also claimed the Merseysiders are shifting their attention to Rodrygo, whose price tag at the Spanish giants is said to have dropped. One report has even claimed an informal agreement over personal terms has been agreed between the Brazilian and the defending Premier League champions. Considering his previous comments on Rodrygo, Merino would be worried by Liverpool's strength as a rival club if he arrived on Merseyside. Before the Gunners faced Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals second leg last season, Merino was asked which player at Los Blancos would he want to play with. Despite having the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior to choose from, he opted for Rodrygo. He told El Partidazo de COPE: "They are all players of a very high level, I love them all, but I have already said that I would like to play with him [Rodrygo]. "He is very good technically; between the lines, he plays very well, he runs into space well. I really enjoy watching him play. "It's a profile that every midfielder would like to play with. It's a profile that every midfielder would like to play with.' Arsenal explored an opportunity to bring Rodrygo to the Emirates Stadium, but they instead opted to sign Chelsea star Noni Madueke for £52m. Reports from ESPN Brazil have claimed Liverpool made contact with Rodrygo's agents and could soon make a first formal bid for his services. It has separately been claimed that Liverpool have already spoken to Rodrygo's people, and that he has given an early green light to personal terms with the Reds. However, as for the move itself, it remains early days, with nothing official or formal seemingly having been agreed as of yet. However, what is clear is Liverpool are looking for more firepower in their frontline. Despite signing Florian Wirtz for a Premier League record £116m and French forward Hugo Ekitike for £79m, while also holding onto Mohamed Salah, Slot still wants more options in his forward line. Luis Diaz recently departed Anfield to join Bayern Munich for £65m and striker Darwin Nunez has been identified as a target by Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. Meanwhile, Isak is still stuck in a stand-off with Newcastle, although it appears a second bid will not be forthcoming from the Reds as of yet. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently admitted he does not know what will happen going forward. After they drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in the final match of their tour of Asia, Howe, reacting to Liverpool's bid, said: "I don't know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again." Isak was pictured returning to Newcastle's training ground on Monday morning for talks on the current situation.
