New US tariffs to kick in Aug 1 barring trade deals
The rates will "boomerang back" to the sometimes very high levels which President Donald Trump had announced on April 2 -- before he suspended the levies to allow for trade talks and set a July 9 deadline for agreement, Bessent told CNN.
Bessent confirmed comments by Trump to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday in which he also cited a new deadline: "Well, I'll probably start them on August 1. Well, that's pretty early. Right?"
The president said he had signed 12 letters to be sent out, likely on Monday.
The tariffs were part of a broader announcement in April where Trump imposed a 10 percent duty on goods from almost all trading partners, with a plan to step up these rates for a select group within days.
But he swiftly paused the hikes until July 9, allowing for trade talks to take place.
Countries have been pushing to strike deals that would help them avoid these elevated duties.
So far, the Trump administration has unveiled deals with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while Washington and Beijing agreed to temporarily lower staggeringly high levies on each other's products.
As his July 9 deadline approaches, Trump has repeatedly said he plans to inform countries of US tariff rates by sending them letters.
Aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump said sending notices would be much easier than "sitting down and working 15 different things... this is what you have to pay, if you want to do business (with) the United States."
Bessent pushed back at CNN host Dana Bash's assertion the administration was using threats rather than negotiations, and denied that Trump was setting a new deadline with the August 1 date.
"It's not a new deadline. We are saying, this is when it's happening, if you want to speed things up have at it. If you want to go back to the old rate that's your choice," he said.
He said the playbook was to apply "maximum pressure" and cited the European Union as an example, saying they are "making very good progress" after a "slow start."

Many top-ranking military leaders as well as nuclear scientists were killed over the 12-day period, which saw Iran launch significant retaliatory attacks on Tel Aviv and other locations in Israel. One key pre-recorded speech upon the end of fighting, issued by Khamenei on June 26, involved the top Shia religious cleric dismissing President Trump's demand for Iran's submission. He declared that Iran had dealt 'a slap to America's face' by launching an attack on a US military base in Qatar; however, the Pentagon said all inbound projectiles were intercepted. Trump responded by directing a message at Khamenei which said 'You're a man of great faith, respected in your country. But you need to be honest — you got beat to hell.' Given the obvious deep inroads Mossad intelligence has made into the Islamic Republic, Khamenei likely spent the conflict in a secret underground bunker known only to his closest aides. Iran suffered severe damage, but Tel Aviv also showed signs of devastation from Iranian ballistic and hypersonic missile strikes: At one point the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was attacked and reportedly blown up by Israeli warplanes. But Iran's ballistic missiles also did severe damage on some Israeli military command centers, including apparent attacks on some Mossad locations in Israel.

Trump meeting could ‘advance' Gaza deal
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that he hoped an upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump could 'help advance' a Gaza ceasefire deal, after sending negotiators to Doha for indirect talks with Hamas. Under mounting pressure to end the war, now approaching its 22nd month, the Israeli premier is scheduled to sit down today with Trump, who has recently made a renewed push to end the fighting. Speaking before boarding Israel's state jet bound for Washington, Netanyahu said: 'We are working to achieve this deal that we have discussed, under the conditions that we have agreed to.' He added he had dispatched the team to Doha 'with clear instructions', and thought the meeting with Trump 'can definitely help advance this (deal), which we are all hoping for'. Netanyahu had previously said Hamas's response to a draft US-backed ceasefire proposal contained 'unacceptable' demands. A Palestinian official familiar with the talks and close to Hamas said international mediators had informed the group that 'a new round of indirect negotiations... will begin in Doha today'. The talks would focus on conditions for a possible ceasefire, including hostage and prisoner releases, and Hamas would also seek the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing to evacuate the wounded, the official told AFP. Hamas's delegation, led by its top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, was in Doha, the official told AFP. Israel's public broadcaster said the country's delegation had left for the Qatari capital in the early afternoon.

Musk creates new US political party
Elon Musk, an ex-ally of US President Donald Trump, said yesterday he had launched a new political party in the United States to challenge what the tech billionaire described as the country's "one-party system." The world's richest person -- and Trump's biggest political donor in the 2024 election -- had a bitter falling out with the president after leading the Republican's effort to slash spending and cut federal jobs as head of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk has clashed with Trump over the president's massive domestic spending plan, saying it would explode the US debt, and vowed to do everything in his power to defeat lawmakers who voted for it. Now he has created the socalled America Party, his own political framework, through which to try and achieve t hat. "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," the Space X and Tesla boss posted on X, the social media platform that he owns. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." Musk cited a poll -- uploaded on Friday, US Independence Day -- in which he asked whether respondents "want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system" that has dominated US politics for some two centuries. The yes-or-no survey earned more than 1.2 million responses. "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!" he posted on Saturday. Musk also shared a meme depicting a two-headed snake and the caption "End the Uniparty." On Friday after posting the poll, Musk laid out a possible political battle plan to pick off vulnerable House and Senate seats and become "the deciding vote" on key legislation. "One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts," Musk posted on X. All 435 US House seats are up for grabs every two years, while about one third of the Senate's 100 members, who serve sixyear terms, are elected every two years. Some observers were quick to point out how third-party campaigns have historically split the vote -- as businessman Ross Perot's independent presidential run in 1992 did when it helped doom George H.W. Bush's re-election bid resulting in Democrat Bill Clinton's victory.
