US tries to deport stateless Palestinian woman again despite judge's order

Yahoo05-07-2025
The US government has tried for the second time to deport a stateless Palestinian woman, according to court documents – despite a judge's order barring her removal.
Ward Sakeik, a 22-year-old newlywed, was detained in February on her way home from her honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands. Last month, the government attempted to deport her without informing her where she was being sent, according to her husband, Taahir Shaikh. An officer eventually told her that she would be sent to the Israel border – just hours before Israel launched airstrikes on Iran.
After her lawyers filed suit on her behalf, US district judge Ed Kinkeade issued an order on 22 June barring the government from deporting Sakeik or removing her from the Texas district where she is being detained while her case is decided.
But on Monday, the government tried once again to deport her. Officers at the detention facility woke her up early in the morning on Monday, and told her she 'had to leave'. When she tried to tell the officer there was a court order blocking her removal, the officer responded: 'It's not up to me.'
'Sakeik informed me that when she arrived at intake, her belongings had been placed outside the door,' her lawyer testified in court documents.
Sakeik's family is from Gaza, but she was born in Saudi Arabia, which does not grant birthright citizenship to the children of foreigners. She and her family came to the US on a tourist visa when she was eight and applied for asylum – but were denied. She has had deportation orders since she was nine years old, but she and her family were allowed to remain in Texas as long as they complied with requirements to check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Eventually, she graduated from high school in Mesquite, Texas, earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas Arlington and started a wedding photography business. On 31 January, she had a wedding of her own. She applied for a green card, and the first stage of her application was approved.
'The past 12 months of my life have just been the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. You go from buying your first home, planning your dream wedding, attending that wedding, going on your honeymoon, to being separated for over 120 days,' said her husband, a US citizen, in a press conference in June.
Due to Sakeik's immigration status, the couple had deliberately chosen not to travel internationally for their honeymoon, deciding to explore the Virgin Islands, a US territory, instead.
On 11 February, a Customs and Border Protection officer stopped Sakeik and asked for proof she was under an 'order of supervision', allowing her to remain in the US despite deportation orders.
Sakeik was kept handcuffed on the plane to Miami, according to ABC News, where the couple's flight back to Texas had a layover. The couple was told she would be released there.
But she has been held in detention ever since.
Shaikh has struggled to cope in the weeks since. He sleeps in the guest room of the house they purchased together, rather than the master bed, he told the Dallas Morning News last month. 'I don't sit on my couch when I eat my meals, I sit on the floor,' he said, out of survivor's guilt.
The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Sakeik was flagged because she 'chose to fly over international waters and outside the US customs zone and was then flagged by CBP trying to re-enter the continental US'.
'The facts are she is in our country illegally. She overstayed her visa and has had a final order by an immigration judge for over a decade,' said assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
McLaughlin did not address the Guardian's question about why the government tried to deport Sakeik despite a judge's order barring her removal.

Off-duty border patrol agent shot in a Manhattan park in apparent botched robbery, police say

NEW YORK (AP) — An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in a Manhattan park on Saturday following an apparent robbery gone wrong, New York City police and federal officials say. The 42-year-old officer was in stable condition Sunday and expected to survive. A spokesperson for the NYPD said there was no indication that the shooting was politically motivated. The agent, who was not in uniform, was sitting in a park beneath the George Washington Bridge when he was approached by a man riding on the back of a moped, who then shot him in the face and arm, police said. The off-duty officer returned fire as the moped driver and alleged shooter rode off. No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, according to a police spokesperson. The Department of Homeland Security shared video online of the two men on a moped, alleging that one of the suspects had entered the country illegally. The NYPD spokesperson said they had no information about the source of that claim. The shooting comes as federal officials warn of a surge of attacks on agents carrying out President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda. As enforcement efforts have ramped up in recent months, many officers have chosen to cover their faces with the goal of avoiding harassment in public and online. On Sunday, the acting director of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons, said he would allow agents to continue covering their faces as a safety measure. 'If that's a tool that the men and women of ICE that keeps themselves and their families safe, then I will allow it,' Lyons said.

Little Village buildings spray-painted with swastikas, pro-ICE statement

Swastikas were spray-painted on several buildings in Little Village over the weekend, and one building was tagged a second time with a pro-immigration enforcement statement, community members said. According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, three buildings in the 2700 block of West Cermak Road and one in the 2500 block were vandalized around midnight Saturday. Community members said a grocery store and two community organizations were spray-painted with swastikas in the 2700 block of West Cermak. Half of the front wall of La Frutería grocery store is 50 feet of uninterrupted cinderblock wall — a perfect canvas for the street artists whose murals occupy the space. Bibiana Mesa, one of the owners of La Frutería grocery store, said they decided to give the space to the community when they bought the business five years ago. 'It's either we have them do something to relate a message, or we have it getting tagged by gangs in the area or whatnot,' she said. 'It brings up a lot of colors, and it makes people feel good, our community is being represented.' In the past, the wall has been home to a Chicago Bulls cartoon and a mural honoring the Hispanic community, Mesa said. Until Sunday, the wall featured a mural reading 'FREE PALESTINE' with a child standing on a pile of burning rubble in front of a Palestinian flag. The Mesas check their building for issues every morning when they arrive. On Saturday, as they pulled up in their car, they saw there were swastikas on the front of the building. 'And as we looked around, we noticed that other buildings around the area were vandalized as well,' Mesa said. The Mesas painted over the swastikas on their building Saturday, but the swastikas were still visible. They decided the mural had to be painted over completely to remove all traces and planned to do so on Sunday. But when they came in Sunday morning, 'ICE RULES' had been added to the front of the building, an apparent reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The full facade is now the same shade of pink as the rest of the building. Still, the Mesas are hoping that local artists will reach out to propose new mural ideas. 'These people are trying to scare us, but you know, we're here with strong community, and we will get through this,' Mesa said. This follows a similar incident in Pilsen in June, in which a woman defaced a mural at 16th Street and Ashland Avenue and was accused of attacking another woman who tried to stop her. That mural depicted solidarity between a Mexican and a Palestinian man. Latinos Progresando, a nonprofit that provides community services for the Mexican community, including immigration legal services and education, posted pictures on social media of a swastika painted on its front door. In an accompanying statement, it wrote that 'at least four other entities' had been similarly targeted. 'It is clear that the perpetrator, motivated by a federal government who has unleashed masked, heavily armed ICE agents into our neighborhood, believed that this cowardly act would further intimidate, frighten, and divide our community,' the statement read. 'Let's be clear about one thing — Latinos Progresando will not back away from our values or be deterred from our work because of this heinous criminal act. We are not going anywhere.' The third building tagged was the Chicago Liberation Center, a community center where social media posts show people have recently gathered to focus on actions against ICE and deportation. A window flying a Palestinian flag was painted with a swastika that has since been removed. Police said no one is in custody and detectives are investigating.
