OXFORD City have announced the return of midfielder Latrell Humphrey-Ewers ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 22-year-old was formerly part of the Reading academy and represented the England Under-16s alongside the likes of Liverpool attacker Harvey Elliott and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
After being released by the Royals, Humphrey-Ewers joined the Velocity Football programme at the Hoops, breaking into the first team during the 2022/23 campaign.

Humphrey-Ewers played his part as the Hoops won promotion to the Vanarama National League that season, and was then rewarded with his first professional contract in June 2023.
The midfielder was offered a new deal to stay with the Hoops last summer, but moved to Bath City in National League South, spending the latter part of the campaign on loan at Taunton Town.
Humphrey-Ewers told the Hoops website: 'I'm really happy to be back. I feel like it was the right time to come back, and I'm really happy to be here.
'I learnt a lot about my game whilst on loan with Taunton Town last season, and I'm ready to show that here under the gaffer and with the new players.'
Hoops manager Ross Jenkins added: 'I'm delighted to see Latrell back in an Oxford City shirt. He's someone we as a club have worked with for a number of seasons, and he's a player who's worked his way through the Velocity programme and into first team football. I'm looking forward to seeing him step up again.'

Harvey Elliott gesture to Germany raises eyebrows after leading England to trophy

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott was seen gesturing to Germany after helping England retain its European Under-21 crown with another sublime performance for the Three Lions. Elliott, 22, scored the opening goal in a 3-2 win over Germany in the European Under-21 final, which was his fifth of the tournament. Elliott has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with several Premier League teams interested in signing the talented midfielder. Advertisement The former Fulham star was also named Player of the Tournament for his heroics in Slovakia, which is expected to boost Liverpool's asking price should the club entertain a sale. However, Elliott hasn't just gone viral for his performances, but his conduct after the final whistle. While some fans theorized that Elliott's gesture was rude, it more likely represents England now winning back-to-back U21 championships. Advertisement England beat Spain 1-0 in 2023 and defended the title against Germany on Saturday. England made the dream start when Elliott scored after five minutes, and Omari Hutchinson made it 2-0 shortly after. Germany hit back just before half-time through Nelson Weiper before Paul Nebel equalized after 61 minutes. Jonathan Rowe became England's hero in extra time, as he sealed the victory with his first touch of the game. Elliott's opener was his fifth of the tournament and his 14th as a member of the England U21s. Elliott has now scored more goals than Alan Shearer at U21 level, and is second on the all-time list behind Eddie Nketiah (16 goals from 2018-2021). Advertisement The 22-year-old was heavily praised by former England international Conor Coady, who said during Channel 4's coverage of the European Under-21 final: "I don't think he needs to help his confidence; I think he's a confident boy anyway and you see that at Liverpool week in, week out, when he plays. "We've seen that in this competition. We've said before about him being a leader - I think he's shown that he's a leader - but I think it's massively important the next step he takes in his career. Whatever he does now, whether that be at Liverpool or elsewhere, that he goes plays and plays a lot. "I think he's at that level now where he has shown to all of us and all the supporters that he is ready for that next level." Elliott's stock is at an all-time high after his stunning performance at the U21 Euros -Credit:2025 UEFA Coady's thoughts were echoed by former England star Jermain Defoe, who added: "He's one of the senior boys now. He's seen it and he's done it. To want to play it, first of all, credit to him, and to produce with a lot pressure… it's a massive summer. Advertisement "We don't know what he's going to do, I'm sure he will have loads of options because he is a quality player. But to do what he's done and Player of the Tournament, five goals… what a tournament." Defoe believes Elliott could leave Liverpool this summer and has urged him to become a star elsewhere if his future is away from Anfield. "There'll be a lot of clubs watching this tournament. We said it before, he's too good to not be playing," Defoe said. "When you're producing in big tournaments like this against the best players... he's a top, top player. For him, he just needs to go out and play, get himself in a team where he's one of the main players, and just go out and express yourself and show how good you are."

Tennis world stunned by heartbreaking scenes as Aussie teenager does it again

Maya Joint will head to Wimbledon as the champion of Eastbourne after the Aussie teenager saved four championship points to win the WTA event on Saturday. Opponent Alexandra Eala was reduced to tears after going so close to glory, and the tears were also flowing when Iga Swiatek lost the Bad Homburg final to Jessica Pegula. The 19-year-old Joint has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last 12 months, and captured her second WTA title on Saturday at Eastbourne on the south-east coast of England. The teenager saved a staggering four championship points to beat her fellow rising star Eala, who couldn't hide her devastation after the match. The 20-year-old from the Philippines was in tears after the final point, and struggled to hold it all in during her runner-up speech. She went agonisingly close to becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour title. "I want to congratulate Maya for a great match and great tournament," Eala said. "This is my first WTA final, it's a big deal for me and for my country too because it's historic. I guess that's also why I'm so emotional. Wimbledon is next week so hopefully I'll forget about this match soon." The astonishing 6-4 1-6 7-6 (12-10) win rocketed Joint to No.41 in the world, and made her the first Australian to win the Eastbourne title in its 50-year history. "It's been an amazing year, an amazing two years," beamed Joint at Devonshire Park, while saluting Aussie coach Chris Mahony. "Thank you for everything you've done. You're a lifesaver." Keep your head held high, Alex ❤️Eala celebrates a historic run for the Philippines with her first tour-level final. 🇵🇭👏#LexusEastbourneOpen — Tennis Channel (@TennisChannel) June 28, 2025 Alexandra Eala💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔The pain of missing out on 4 championship points cuts deepBut she has so much to be proud ofWithin a matter of months, this 20 year old went from being unknown to becoming the pride of Filipino tennis🥹Keep going 🇵🇭❤️ — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) June 28, 2025 Joint kicks off her maiden Wimbledon campaign with a tough opener against Russian No.19 seed Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday. She's part of a 17-strong Aussie contingent at the All England Club - the country's largest in 30 years. "I'm very happy right now, feeling very relieved as well. It was a very difficult match. In that third set, and I'm proud of myself for coming back and staying in the match, even though I'd lost about nine of the last 10 games." Joint won her first WTA title at the Morocco Open five weeks ago, which also came on the weekend before a grand slam. She was then knocked out in the first round of the French Open by compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic. "It's really great preparation. I've got a lot of matches in before Wimbledon, and hopefully I can be in Wimbledon a little bit longer than I was in the French," she said. "I think this time's a tiny bit different. I get one more day of rest, and I'll just detach myself a little bit more from the last match, and just focus on the match coming up." Swiatek was also in tears near the end of her loss to Pegula in Germany. Not known as a grass-court player, the five-time grand slam champ was playing her first final on the surface, but went down in straight sets 6-4 7-5. It was also Swiatek's first final in 12 months since she lifted her fourth French Open trophy in 2024, and the emotions spilled out as the errors piled up in the second set. "This tournament shows there's hope for me on grass," she joked after wiping away the tears. Pegula won her third title of the season, adding to her trophies in Austin (hard court) and Charleston (clay). The American now boasts nine career titles - with five coming in the last 12 months. You feel for Iga #Swiatek at this has dealt her a rough hand for months Iga is too good a player for this dry run to working on your game, Iga and you can still become the dominant #1 you once were 🥰 — Vikash Kumar (@_Vikash) June 28, 2025 with agencies

Freshman quarterback Evan McCalister is Valencia's latest 'secret weapon'

Freshman quarterback Evan McCalister of Valencia High is the younger brother of Denver Broncos defensive back Tanner McCalister. (Eric Sondheimer / Los Angeles Times) Almost every summer, Valencia High football coach Larry Muir tries to make it a mystery as to which of his newcomers projects as a top player. He likes to keep it a secret until after the summer competition is finished. Well, Valencia is headed on its two-week dead period next week, so Muir couldn't hide his thrill watching freshman quarterback Evan McCalister unleash a long pass on the final play Saturday in the Simi Valley passing tournament. The ball was caught in the end zone for a dramatic touchdown by sophomore Michael Wilder as Valencia players roared in delight with a victory over Sierra Canyon to complete a 5-1 afternoon. Advertisement The 6-foot-2 McCalister, 14, has been getting playing time behind returnee Brady Bretthauer since graduating from middle school. There's little doubt he has the arm and mental make-up to become Muir's latest summer sensation, joining the likes of Steven Manfro and Brian Bonner, who were both young, unknown players before using the summer to take off at the running back position. McCalister moved from Texas and is the younger brother of Denver Broncos defensive back Tanner McCalister. "He's very talented," Muir said. "He sees the field really well. He plays beyond his years." Advertisement Saturday was the busiest day so far for summer football competitions. Burbank won the Simi Valley championship by beating the host Pioneers in the final of the Platinum Division. The Bulldogs also had wins over Valencia and Sierra Canyon. Junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte led Burbank on offense. Mission Viejo won its own tournament championship by beating Mater Dei in the final. San Clemente went unbeaten to win the eight-team St. John Bosco tournament. Damian Martinez had two interceptions in the final game against St. John Bosco and tight end Shane Kiley had the winning touchdown catch. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Inglewood in the championship of the Baldwin Park tournament. Advertisement Sign up for the L.A.
