2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro vs. 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail: The Off-Road Battle
Trail drive Both of these vehicles have been out to Hungry Valley OHV park on separate occasions and have been through our three-pack of tests there. The GX defeated the Land Cruiser, and the 4Runner TRD Pro took on the Honda Passport TrailSport. Therefore, we already went into this challenge knowing that the Toyota has an advantage on the ziggurat of integrity, where it went a full step higher thanks to greater flexibility and a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, while both were about equal on the hill climb. So to provide a new challenge, we put together a trail drive that combined a dirt road, some sand, whoops, and a high-speed washboard section to test them out more thoroughly. The two vehicles have very different suspensions, with the TRD Pro opting for Fox shocks and the GX offering a more conventional setup, but with KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) up front. This system uses a hydraulic control to adjust the front stabilizer bar, so it can be tighter on the road for greater stability and loosen up off-road to allow for more articulation. At slower speeds, the GX was more comfortable and its steering felt much more precise. But on the whoops when it would bottom out, the impacts were very harsh in the Lexus. That's where the 4Runner really came alive. This is the desert-running version of the Toyota, and when the speeds crept north of 40 mph, it was much more comfortable than the Lexus. The Fox shocks have internal valves that add pressure as the shock compresses, so when it bottoms out, it doesn't feel nearly as violent, and rebound is also well controlled. Weirdly, the 4Runner was quite uncomfortable at lower speeds, and it never really settled in. (The same is true of driving it on the road.)

Mitsubishi Motors: What's New for 2026
2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid sees mid-cycle refresh including larger battery capacity with increased all-electric range, revised front and rear styling, revised interior, improved driving dynamics, Yamaha audio 2026 Outlander receives all-new mild-hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain; still the least-expensive three-row vehicle available 2026 Eclipse Cross adds standard hood badging on SEL and SEL Touring trims 2026 Outlander Sport continues to provide value-conscious buyers the features and styling they want FRANKLIN, Tenn., July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Value, quality and durability have always been the hallmarks of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles, and the 2026 model-year sees the brand's commitment to exceeding customers' expectations – what you get and what you pay for it – raised to new levels. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today announced updates to its 2026 model year lineup, highlighted by a significantly updated 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid and an all-new mild-hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain in the Outlander. With these significant updates to the Outlander family, Mitsubishi Motors continues to deliver on the promises made in its five-year North American business plan, Momentum 2030, which will see a new or significantly revised vehicle launched in the U.S. each year from 2026 to 2030. Pricing and full technical and specification details on all models will be announced closer to each vehicle's launch. 2026 OUTLANDER PLUG-IN HYBRIDNew for 2026 is a mid-cycle refresh that debuted on the non-plug-in hybrid model for 2025, led by a redesigned interior with significant attention paid to sound-deadening, as well as new materials, new colors, heated and cooled front seats, a redesigned center console with larger-capacity armrest storage, new cupholders and a redesigned phone charger. Also standard on the updated vehicle is a U.S.-industry-exclusive Yamaha® audio system1 and available 12.3" infotainment display screen. On the outside, a revised grille area, redesigned front bumper and new 20" wheels draw attention, as do smoked rear taillights. Mechanically, the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid features a larger-capacity drive battery. This will increase all-electric range, decrease the amount of time the internal combustion engine runs and lead to improved on-road acceleration performance. Under the skin, steering and ride quality are revised through extensive tuning of dampers, springs, stabilizer bars and bushings, all of which combine to produce a more confident and assured driving feel. As the world's first plug-in hybrid electric SUV, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid continues to offer customers more value, more technology and more satisfaction year over year. Featuring an award-winning mix of confident, quiet, eco-friendly motoring, every 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid sports powerful front and rear motors to deliver Mitsubishi Motors' motorsport-inspired Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) twin-motor all-wheel-drive system1. More information and pricing will be provided late this year; the vehicle will debut in Q1 2026. 2026 OUTLANDERFor 2026, Outlander is equipped with a new Mitsubishi Motors-designed and developed engine, the basis of which is shared with Eclipse Cross. A 1.5-liter turbocharged, 16-valve, four-cylinder gasoline unit, this engine will be combined with the company's first mild-hybrid system. Replacing the 2.5-liter engine in the current Outlander, the new powertrain will deliver increased confidence and drivability thanks to electrified torque aiding off-the-line acceleration. 2026 also will see the introduction of a new LE trim, slotted between the entry-level ES and mid-grade SE, as well as a top-line SEL Black Edition and the return of the popular Ralliart model. Building on the overwhelming success of Outlander since the launch of this new-generation model in 2022, the 2025 Outlander debuted with a mid-cycle refresh to interior and exterior styling and customer touch-points, as well as revised road manners. Cosmetically, it carries over into the 2026 model-year unchanged. Pricing and more information about the 2026 Outlander will be released later this year; the vehicle will be available in Q4 2025 2026 ECLIPSE CROSSChanges to the 2026 model are minimal, with the deletion of the embedded navigation and the inclusion as standard on SEL and SEL Touring models of the popular "Eclipse Cross" hood badging (previously a port- or dealer-installed option). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration continues to be standard equipment on all Eclipse Cross models, regardless of trim level. The 2026 Eclipse Cross retains its predecessor's chiseled front and rear design enhancements, with the successful and popular compact crossover utility vehicle otherwise carrying over for the 2026 model year unchanged. All 2026 Eclipse Crosses sport Mitsubishi Motors' signature motorsport-derived S-AWC all-wheel drive system as standard equipment, which helps in various weather conditions and types of road surfaces2. 2026 OUTLANDER SPORTOne of Mitsubishi Motors' best-known nameplates, the 2026 Outlander Sport heads into the new year as a carry-over model from 2025. The brand's least expensive vehicle, Outlander Sport offers quality, an industry-leading warranty and the outstanding value that customers expect from Mitsubishi Motors. Standard on every 2026 Outlander Sport is Mitsubishi's All-Wheel Control (AWC) all-wheel-drive system3, powering adventures and off-highway exploration. Family features like rear-seat warning, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and easy-to-access LATCH child-seat anchors make the Outlander Sport a smart purchase for everyone. According to industry research group Ipsos, 97% of small CUV owners who shopped for a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport purchased one4. TRAIL EDITIONSDedicated Trail Edition trims of Outlander and Outlander Sport will be available for the 2026 model year. Trail Edition debuted on Outlander in 2025 and on Outlander Sport in 2024. Featuring model-specific graphic and trim packages, dedicated wheels, dealer-available off-highway-focused tires and accessory kits and Thule roof-racks and mounts, these Trail Editions build on Mitsubishi Motors' history of motorsport victories in the Dakar Rally and the World Rally Championship. WARRANTYEvery Mitsubishi Motors vehicle is delivered with peace of mind through the brand's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Also standard on every model is a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty, a seven-year/100,000-mile corrosion/perforation warranty, five-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance, and a 2-year/30,000-mile maintenance program5. 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Review, Pricing, and Specs
Overview The Mitsubishi Outlander has a couple of things going for it: Namely, its interior is pretty plush for the price, and it comes with an (albeit dinky) third row—something no other 2026 compact crossover can claim. The driving experience and powertrain are nothing special, but neither are they objectionable. While it's not the quickest SUV on the market, the Outlander rides smoothly and quietly. Plus, it boasts many desirable features, from an easy-to-use and modern-looking infotainment system to standard blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors to optional all-wheel drive. Expert Tip: Environmentally conscious shoppers may want to look at the plug-in Outlander Hybrid, which we cover separately. What's New for 2026? Mitsubishi is likely to leave the Outlander alone for 2026, having refreshed the model just last year. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander is expected to start around $32,000 and go up to $47,000 depending on the trim and options. ES $32,000 (est) SE $35,000 (est) SEL $40,000 (est) Trail Edition $41,000 (est) Platinum Edition $47,000 (est) 0 $10k $20k $30k $40k $50k $60k $70k $80k The mid-level SE model is the best value. We'd opt for the SE Tech package, as it adds desirable equipment such as a 12-speaker Yamaha audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and a digital gauge cluster. All-wheel drive is an $1800 option on all trims except for the top Platinum Edition, where it's standard. This content is imported from Third party. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Engine: 181-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder 181-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Transmission: continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) Drivetrains: front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive The Outlander employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. That engine pairs exclusively with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is the standard configuration, but all-wheel drive is optional. When we drove the 2025 Outlander, we found it to be composed and refined. Its body motions are controlled, and its ride is taut, although the optional 20-inch wheels compromise ride quality somewhat. The additional sound-deadening material appears to be working, because the cabin is quiet. The soft-feeling brake pedal and vague steering were our chief dynamic complaints; they make this vehicle more of a cushy cruiser than a corner carver. 0–60-MPH Times C/D 60-mph Test: 8.5 seconds (AWD) In Comparison: The all-wheel-drive 2025 Outlander SEL we tested got to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds. Other models in the class—such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Toyota RAV4—can beat that by a few tenths. The turbocharged Mazda CX-50, however, crushes the Outlander in the dash to 60. View Exterior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity Bigger SUVs or pickups are better suited for towing, but the Mitsubishi does have the ability to tow as much as 2000 pounds, should you need it. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests: 30 mpg (AWD) 30 mpg (AWD) EPA City Rating: 24 mpg 24 mpg EPA Highway Ratings: 30-31 mpg The EPA hasn't released fuel-economy information for the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander yet, but the 2025 model earns ratings of 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined when equipped with front-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive model sees 1 mpg less on the highway (and in mixed driving). During our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen—the 2025 all-wheel-drive SEL model achieved a result of 30 mpg, matching its EPA result. We expect the 2026 Outlander will post identical numbers. For more information about the Outlander's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: The Outlander's interior accents and surfaces are high quality, and the design looks modern. Most people will find the front seats to be comfortable for long-distance driving, as both feature generous cushioning. Cloth upholstery is standard but higher-end models feature a more premium-looking quilted-leather option. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Second Row: The second-row seats are roomy for adults and seat comfort nearly matches that of the front seats. The bench seat folds flat to accommodate extra cargo, and Mitsubishi treats rear-seat riders to their own climate control vents on the back of the center console. SEL and Platinum trims offer a three-zone automatic climate control system with controls for the second row. Third Row: The third row has very limited legroom, and it's unlikely you'll be able to transport adults back there without hearing complaints. The two-seat third-row folds flat when you don't need it though, which leaves plenty of space for cargo. Cargo Capacity: In our testing, the Outlander's cargo area fit two suitcases with the third row raised, 10 carry-ons with the third row folded, and 22 bags with the second and third rows folded. Along with charging ports at the bottom of the center stack, the system features a few hard buttons, plus a physical knob for volume adjustment. An eight-speaker Yamaha audio system is standard, and a 12-speaker Yamaha system is optional. Additional available infotainment features include wireless device charging and access to the subscription-based Mitsubishi Connect app that provides remote services. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The Outlander comes standard with driver-assistance basics such as automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. The higher trims have more advanced features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
