Florida football adds assistants, sending staff salaries soaring ahead of 2025 season
Florida football's coaching staff grew by one member this offseason after a successful campaign that saw the Gators earn their first winning season in four years and first bowl victory since 2019. Additionally, the payroll ballooned to over $8 million in salaries after some well-earned raises and some staff changes, according to a report from Gators Online.
The total cost of the program's coaching salaries amounts to $8,275,000 this year, and includes all 13 assistants plus director of strength and conditioning Tyler Miles.
Florida was able to expand its sideline presence after the NCAA removed its rule that limited the number of on-field coaches last June. While a pair of defensive assistants — former defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong and defensive coach Will Harris — left Gainesville for greener pastures, the Orange and Blue added three new hires to fill the void left behind.
With Armstrong and Harris out of the picture, Napier and Co. added co-defensive coordinators Vinnie Sunseri and Robert Bala, along with defensive backs coach Deron Wilson, to round out the staff. Eight assistant coaches are earning more in 2025 than in 2024 on their original contracts, while Miles' newly signed two-year deal compensates him better than last year as well.
Nine of Florida's assistants will see pay raises in 2026, with seven receiving at least a $50,000 bump on their checks. The Gators currently have $7,800,000 allotted for their coaches next year without defensive coordinator Roberts under contract.

Cowboys' reunion with La'el Collins an important redemption story

Things didn't end well between La'el Collins and the Dallas Cowboys last go 'round. After starting 71 of 74 games for the Cowboys between 2015-2021, the team soured on Collins. His commitment to health, fitness and the game fell into question as injuries mounted. Dallas eventually released Collins, and his career never truly recovered. He played 15 games in 2023 marking the last meaningful football he'd play to date. Once upon a time Collins was a valued member of a stellar Cowboys line. He was a first-round talent who went undrafted after the proximity to an apparent violent crime scared teams away in the 2015 NFL draft. He rebuilt his name and reputation in Dallas then, and now he is getting that same chance at redemption with the Cowboys in 2025. With injuries ravaging the Cowboys offensive line in training camp, Dallas is in the market for viable offensive lineman at multiple positions Collins was brought in for a workout to hopefully be just that. After reportedly working with famed offensive line guru Duke Manyweather over the offseason, Collins is said to be back in game shape. At 33, it might be now or never for Collins. It's been reported the workout went well and Collins is signing with the Cowboys. He has the ability to play inside and outside and could be a solid swing lineman for the Cowboys in the preseason and possibly beyond. Collins' friendship with Dak Prescott runs deep and putting a happy ending on the saga in Dallas is just what the doctor ordered for this drama-filled time of the year (see also: Trevon Diggs and Micah Parsons). Time will tell what Collins has left in the tank and what kind of role he'll play n 2025. But getting a shot at redemption is truly something to cheer for. Not only from a team need perspective but from a human side of things. Former Texas A&M QB discusses nearly traumatic leg injury, and his road back to the field

Former Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson, who transferred to College Station after two seasons with LSU before the 2022 season, left the program, gaining immense respect from the Aggie fan base who watched him play through several injuries, including broken ribs at the end of the 2023 campaign. Johnson, who is the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, has never shied away from competition, choosing Texas A&M over a host of programs that would have started him right away, instead of playing behind former A&M QBs Haynes King and Conner Weigman to start his Aggie career. However, both players dealt with injury issues, vaulting Johnson into the starting lineup. In two seasons at Texas A&M, Johnson appeared in 12 games, while his best string of performances came during the 2023 season, throwing for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions, while, as I stated above, played with broken ribs during the close road close to Ole Miss, which is likely resulted in former head coach Jimbo Fisher's dismissal. With Conner Weigman returning, paired with current starting quarterback Marcel Reed behind him, Johnson once again entered the transfer portal, choosing North Carolina as his final collegiate destination. However, during the Tar Heels' opening game of the 2024 season against Minnesota, Johnson's brutal leg injury ended his year before it truly began. After a video showed the senior signal caller looking healthy during one of his many throwing sessions this offseason, Johnson recently spoke to the media during the first week of North Carolina's preseason, revealing that his road back to health was more complicated than all of us had assumed. According to journalist Chris Mason, Johnson had five surgeries after his leg injury, which occurred back on August 29, 2024. 'There was a point in time where I thought I was going to lose my leg.' Max Johnson's toughness has never been in doubt, and this further proves that first-year North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick is in good hands at the position, especially from a leadership perspective. North Carolina will open the 2025 season at home against TCU on Monday, September 1.
