They successfully cultured millions of cells from a preserved skin sample taken before the rhino's death. According to a BBC report, a skin sample taken from a rhino that died in 2021 is now offering fresh hope for conservation which has only become possible because of the pioneering efforts by a UK wildlife charity.
The southern white rhino which lived at Whipsnade Zoo passed away at the age of 40. In the wake of its death, the veterinary staff collaborated with three specialist organizations to preserve tissue samples. Now, Nature's SAFE which is a conservation charity based in Whitchurch, Shropshire, has successfully cultivated millions of living cells from that sample.

This development represents a significant step toward a groundbreaking technique that may one day allow scientists to create viable egg or sperm cells from preserved rhino tissue, offering a new path for reviving endangered populations. Although the rhino died in 2021, new technology could allow her genetic material to support the southern white rhino population for generations to come. Before her death, conservation charity Nature's SAFE collected a skin sample from her ear while she was still alive. The cells were carefully frozen at –196°C, with the goal of preserving them long-term. Scientists hope that once melted, the cells can be revived and multiplied to produce new cell lines.
A representative from the charity explained that while the process may seem like something out of science fiction, similar techniques have already been successful in mice ,showing promising potential for helping other species reproduce.
Expert's efforts for Rhino revival from dead to new life
In April, the team carefully took the rhino's frozen cells out of storage and brought them back to room temperature. Even though the rhino died nearly four years ago, they were able to grow new cells from the sample. Lab technician Lucy Morgan, who helped make it happen, said that the cells still carry the rhino's living DNA and can now be used to help protect the species, even though the animal is no longer alive. Nature's SAFE, which is also known as the "bio bank" has collected and preserved biological material from 300 different animal species — including 37 that are critically endangered and four that no longer exist in the wild.
Goal of Nature's SAFE for Rhino's new life from dead
The organization's goal is to help prevent animal extinction by protecting genetic diversity. It supports advanced reproductive technologies like artificial insemination and IVF to help maintain and rebuild strong, healthy wildlife populations. Debbie Rolmanis, the chief operations officer, explained: 'By collecting and growing skin cells from endangered animals, we're creating a living library of genetic material. This resource could one day help boost the genetic health of struggling species and stop them from disappearing.' She added that skin cells are especially useful because they're easy to collect and can be reproduced endlessly. Unlike other resources, they aren't limited, making them a powerful and reliable way to preserve an animal's DNA in working condition.
Tullis Matson, founder and chair of the charity, shared his excitement about successfully reviving the rhino's cells, calling it a potential breakthrough for conservation. 'This is a major step forward,' he said. 'We've now shown that the rhino's cells are still alive and usable nearly four years after her death.' He explained that this achievement could be vital for saving other critically endangered animals — such as the mountain chicken frog and the Lake Pátzcuaro salamander — that might otherwise face extinction. Thanks to advances in bio-banking, their survival is now more possible than ever.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday declared that Amaravati, the capital city of the State, will be developed as a Green Hydrogen Valley, positioning it at the forefront of India's clean energy revolution. Speaking at the Green Hydrogen Summit-2025 held at SRM University, located at the foothill of Neerukonda, a small hill in Amaravati, the Chief Minister called upon researchers and investors to focus on low-cost green hydrogen production and assured necessary infrastructure support from the government. Mr. Naidu emphasised the urgency to shift from traditional fossil fuels to carbon-free energy sources like green hydrogen, highlighting its potential to reduce costs and benefit the common man. He noted that green hydrogen would be a game-changer for the energy sector, supporting India's net-zero carbon target by 2070. Two major projects Two major investment deals worth ₹51,000 crore were signed at the summit in Mr. Naidu's presence. UK-based Yamna Company, which focused on developing and investing in green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, will invest ₹16,000 crore to establish a one-million-tonne capacity green hydrogen plant in Krishnapatnam, Nellore district. Similarly, KSH Infra will invest ₹35,000 crore to set up plants in Machilipatnam with a capacity of 150 kilotonnes of green hydrogen and 600 kilo tonnes of green ammonia per year. The Chief Minister stated that Andhra Pradesh is already advancing in this direction, with NTPC setting up a green hydrogen plant in Visakhapatnam and green ammonia production soon to begin in Kakinada. The State has set a target of producing 160 MW of green hydrogen and is developing electrolyser capacity of 3 GW alongside solar, wind, and pumped hydro energy. Mr. Naidu announced that a Quantum Valley powered by artificial intelligence will be established in Amaravati and that the Amaravati Green Hydrogen Declaration will be released after the two-day summit being held at SRM University. A review of its implementation will be held after one year, he added. The university Pro-Chancellor Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan said that they would focus on green energy research and development by partnering with the stakeholders. Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been giving priority to non-corban energy and providing incentives for researchers and industrialists, with an aim to reduce the dependence on imported fossil fuels. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, NITI Aayog member V.K. Saraswat and others spoke on various aspects of green hydrogen. Many industrialists, eminent scholars and government officials participated in the programme.

'The vehicle will demonstrate key technologies for sustained hypersonic flight in the atmosphere and will be upgradable, allowing for the exchange of materials, software, and propulsion systems between flight test campaigns,' the ESA said in a statement. New Delhi: The European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with the UK-based Frazer Nash Consultancy, has launched a research programme aimed at developing and flying a hydrogen-powered spaceplane by 2031. The proposed fully reusable experimental aerospace vehicles would be capable of flying at Mach 5, meaning five times the speed of sound. In this report, ThePrint explains the technology. The technology Announced as a precursor to the UK Space Conference, scheduled for 16-17 July, the INVICTUS programme will bring together players in the hypersonic technology field, including Spirit AeroSystems, Cranfield University, and Frazer Nash Consultancy, the firm leading the project. Under INVICTUS, a preliminary design for a full-flight system, with conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs, will be analysed. The technology would utilise precooled hydrogen-fueled propulsion, which would allow the incoming hypersonic airflow to cool down before entering the engine. That, in turn, would enable sustained operation at extreme speeds, exceeding the limits of conventional jet engines by a significant margin. Reaction Engines Limited, a company that, in 2024, ceased operations, followed by Frazer Nash absorbing it, had developed the precooled hydrogen-fuelled propulsion. A traditional jet cannot fly at hypersonic speeds because an aircraft under the conditions prevailing at that speed will experience extremely high temperatures due to shock heating and friction from the air. A precooler engine, however, solves this problem. It cools the air before it reaches the engine, allowing the craft to travel at such high speeds. What will make the hydrogen-powered spaceplane different from existing rockets is that it will take off horizontally from a runway and reach the outer realms of space before its return, landing in the same way as a regular commercial plane. Its hydrogen-powered engines would cause lower emissions and have improved efficiency compared to traditional jet-fueled engines. ESA, in its statement, said the full-flight system will be a reusable vehicle, scheduled to take flight by 2031.
