Man stabs deli workers over years-old grudge over sandwich toppings
The unnamed man stormed into a New Jersey bakery and sandwich shop at around 8am Thursday morning and slashed two brothers with a box cutter over a sandwich order he says was messed up four years ago.
The bizarre attack went down at Baladna Bakery on Main Street in Paterson when brothers Abed and Mohammad Assad were opening shop for the day.
Surveillance video captured the moment the enraged man burst into the store and confronted a female cashier before ranting on about a years-old hot dog order.
'He said "she forgot to give me the hot dog." OK, take the hot dog and $3 and just leave,' Moneer Simrin, a friend of the victims told NBC4.
'And he's like "No, because I got a sandwich last time and they gave me some eggplant and I don't like eggplant." He's just looking for a problem,' she added.
The brothers tried to calm the man down and even offered store credit.
But the suspect allegedly became enraged, and that's when he pulled out a box cutter.
'They tried to tell him "Just leave, please." And he got the knife,' Simrin said.
The man allegedly slashed Abed Assad in the chest and Mohammad on his hand and arm before running off.
Graphic footage from a neighboring insurance business shows the suspect fleeing the shop.
Photos show Assad with his arm wrapped in thick white bandages from elbow to wrist.
He told NBC New York he recognized the attacker from four years ago and said the man had even come by the bakery earlier in the week asking for them by name.
According to Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, the man was upset because he had received an eggplant sandwich instead of his egg sandwich he supposedly had ordered four years ago.
'They're concerned,' Sayegh told CBS. 'This type of thing does not happen in that area.'
'I tried to assuage some of the fears, allay their concerns and reassure them that the police department is completely focused on bringing whomever is responsible for this tragic, violent incident to justice,' he added.
The two victims were taken to Saint Joseph's University Hospital and were released on Friday.
Police are still looking for the suspect.

Newlyweds mourn daughter, 1, who drowned in daycare's gated pool at $800,000 New York home
Heartbroken parents are mourning the loss of their adorable one-year-old daughter after she drowned in a New York City daycare's gated pool. River Wilson was found unconscious around 1pm Friday at Ana's Butterfly Garden Family Group daycare in the Bronx. Her parents, who recently got married, had dropped her off at the $800,000 home that day just like they've always done since August 2024. But an hour later, Wilson's family - who live just around the corner from the daycare - received the devastating news their baby girl died while in the care of a 47-year-old woman who told police she was busy cooking when it happened. 'We heard a lot of yelling and screaming,' the neighbor, a 46-year-old former federal police officer who asked to remain anonymous, told NY Daily News. He immediately jumped into action and started CPR on the tot while on the phone to emergency services. 'They told us to get a pair of scissors to cut the baby's dress off. I couldn't find a pulse but my instinct was to continue to do CPR. There was no response,' the neighbor recalled. Once emergency personnel arrived at the at-home daycare they rushed Wilson to Montefiore Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The unidentified woman responsible for Wilson told NYPD officers she was cooking when she realized she hadn't seen the baby for about 20 minutes. She soon found her in the pool, according to police. It is unclear if the woman will face charges. Daily Mail contacted the NYPD for comment. Wilson's grieving family have been left confused by how the precious little girl even made her way to the backyard pool. 'We can't imagine how she ended up in the pool,' the baby's aunt, Inemesit O'Boyle, told the outlet. 'She can't open the door. She can't climb a gate.' O'Boyle said the daycare has not been in contact with her younger sister or her husband about what happened. 'A neighbor heard screaming and ran around the corner and saw the baby — that's how our family found out,' she said. 'My baby sister and her husband were recently married. It couldn't be a more tragic situation. We didn't even know they had a pool. It was a behind a closed door and behind a gate.' Although the family has not heard a word from the daycare, they hope surveillance cameras captured how the tragedy unfolded. The daycare, which has operated since 2018, is authorized to take care of 10 children between the ages of six weeks to 12-year-old, according to The center is run by Ana Feliz Gonzalez. She also owns the home it operates out of, according to public records. Wilson's aunt has remembered her as a 'beautiful' and 'amazing' child. 'River was beautiful. She was amazing. She was their first and only child. This is the worst thing that can happen to a family,' O'Boyle said. Loved ones gathered for a memorial for the toddler outside the family's home. Balloons, stuffed animals and flowers have also been left outside the daycare. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help her parents and family during this difficult time. 'River was a beautiful, joyful baby—full of wonder, light, and laughter. Her radiant smile lit up every room, and her sweet spirit brought immense love to everyone around her,' the page read. 'Though her time with us was heartbreakingly short, the love she gave and inspired will never fade.' As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $3,000 was raised. Wilson will be laid to rest on August 13, according to the tribute page.

Horrifying moment thug smashes car into peacemaker who was trying to break up fight and leaves him traumatic brain injury - just hours being released from prison
This is the horrifying moment a thug smashed in to a peacemaker who was trying to break up a fight, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury. Hugh Raymond Holmes, 35, got into a fight in Ferryhill, County Durham, which involved several men and women on the day he left jail for a separate offence. Following a large altercation involving several people, a local waded in to the argument and attempted to break up the brawl that had already injured several people. The 35-year-old appeared to cool off but then made his way to a car, got behind the wheel and drove in to the innocent neighbour, smashing him in to a parked van. The crash left the peacemaker with traumatic brain injuries and multiple fractured and broken bones. CCTV released by Durham Constabulary shows the shocking moment the local intervened and was brutally attacked in return. Footage shows a fight breaking out between two groups of men and women after one woman mistook another for pulling a face at her in the car as she drove by. The two groups set upon each other with Holmes being initially punched and hitting the floor before being repeatedly kicked. As the two groups of people continue to punch and kick each other, shouting in the residential street, a neighbour comes over and intervenes. He pulls some of those fighting off each other and stops one man from punching Holmes again. According to police the man did not 'hit anyone, he doesn't kick anyone, he doesn't punch anyone. All he does is get in the middle and split everybody up.' The police added that the 'concerned citizen' does not become 'aggressive or violent' at any point. Following the break-up of the fight, Holmes walks over to a parked black car and climbs in before speeding off up the street, turning around and speeding back down again. At high speed Holmes crashed the vehicle straight in to the back of a silver van, crushing the neighbour as one of the others involved in the fight jumps out of the way. Those around scream: 'Watch the car' before Holmes crashes, and continue to scream and shout in shock before rushing to the injured neighbour. Holmes was seen climbing out of the car, casting a quick glance over the scene before walking off in the opposite direction, leaving the neighbour lying on the road. The man suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple facial fractures and a broken leg requiring surgical screws. He spent months in hospital and is still undergoing treatment. Body worn footage from the scene shows Holmes tell a police officer: 'I wish I was back in jail.' The police officer asks when he was last inside and he replies: 'This morning.' Holmes was arrested and charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent, inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, disqualified driving, driving with no insurance and refusing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis. Holmes, of Spennymoor, Durham, admitted all charges except causing grievous bodily which he was found guilty of by a jury at Durham Crown Court after 20 minutes of deliberations. He has now been jailed for 18 years and banned from driving for 15 years. The brute had previously been serving a 32 month sentence after crashing a stolen car he had been driving on a bridge of the A1(M) in Durham which left his female passenger seriously hurt. DC Lauren Howe, who led the investigation, said: 'Holmes is a despicable criminal who clearly hadn't learnt any lessons from his previous crime which he had just been released from prison for. 'He left the victim with critical injuries just before Christmas and they continue to have a huge impact on him and his family. 'However, thanks to the bravery of the victim and the whole community pulling together, we were able to gather overwhelming evidence to charge Holmes and put him back before the court. 'We hope putting Holmes back behind bars for a significant amount of time will bring some comfort to the victim who, in his own words, continues to stand tall.'
