Qannati Objet d'Art has partnered with Bahrain Polytechnic to host Swiss horology master Pierre Christe for a week-long watchmaking residency, marking a milestone in luxury craftsmanship education in the Gulf.
The residency, which began on Sunday at Qannati Lab on the Bahrain Polytechnic campus, will run until Thursday. It gives students a rare opportunity to learn fine watchmaking techniques—such as movement assembly and finishing—directly from a certified trainer of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) and instructor at Switzerland's WOSTEP.
Hands-On Breakthrough
Qannati Lab is the first practical horology education and production centre in the GCC. Its goal is to position Bahrain as a future hub for high-end watchmaking. The programme also aims to bridge Swiss-level craftsmanship with Gulf-based talent.
'We are honoured to host a figure of Pierre's standing,' said Mahmood Qannati, founder of Qannati Objet d'Art. 'This partnership brings global mastery to local hands and signals a new era for horological education in the region.'
National Vision Bahrain Polytechnic CEO Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin said the collaboration reflects the institution's mission to prepare skilled graduates in future-focused industries, including luxury design and creative technology. The initiative aligns with Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy through innovation and non-oil sectors.
Supported by the Polytechnic's academic infrastructure and cross-disciplinary teams, the residency is part of Qannati's broader effort to elevate Bahrain's standing in the world of haute horlogerie.
The programme also follows Qannati Lab's international recognition in The New York Times, which highlighted it as the region's first serious effort to bring luxury watchmaking education to the GCC.

Dubai Rises to 7th Most Expensive City Globally

Dubai has moved up five places to No. 7 as the most expensive city in the world in Julius Baer's Global Wealth and Lifestyle Report for 2025. The report by the Swiss private banking group called Dubai a 'firm challenger' to the traditional bastions of wealth such as London, Monaco and Zurich. The report noted the number of high-net-worth individuals shifting to the emirate, lured by tax incentives and the lifestyle. 'The momentum of millionaires relocating to Dubai, which began during the pandemic, is predicted to continue,' the report added. Singapore remained the most expensive city in the world for the third year running, followed by London and Hong Kong. Monaco was fourth in the list, Zurich fifth, and Shanghai dropped two places to sixth. New York, Paris, and Milan rounded up the top 10, taking up the eighth to tenth spots. For the first time since the survey began in 2020, prices tracked by a basket of luxury goods fell 2 per cent, which Julius Baer described as 'quite exceptional' since historically, high-end consumer prices have risen twice as fast as average consumer prices. Asia Pacific (APAC) countries dominated the list. However, the region saw only slight price decreases of 1 per cent on average across the region, making it the most stable of all the surveyed regions this year. While Singapore and Hong Kong were first and third, Bangkok and Tokyo made the largest leaps, each climbing six places to 11th and 17th, respectively. Manila fell to 23rd despite a 7.5 per cent rise in average local currency prices. Mumbai, India's financial capital, moved to No. 20 globally. Despite India's position as a rising economic powerhouse, Mumbai remained relatively affordable for most services, particularly hospitality and travel. It was jointly ranked the most expensive for a treadmill, but the cheapest across the board for LASIK. Christian Gattiker, head of research, Julius Baer, commented: 'In light of ongoing uncertainty, trade tensions, and tariffs, our findings represent the final moment 'before' the current situation. Next year's report will likely provide a fascinating 'after' perspective.' The report showed that hotel suites prices rose 10.3 per cent in Singapore, and fell 26.1 per cent in Hong Kong. London rose on the back of a 26.6 per cent jump in the price of private education after legislative changes and a 29.7 per cent gain in business class flights, but its appeal as a center for wealth had a 'rather turbulent ride' over the past year with the abolition of non-domiciled residency status, which has helped cities such as Dubai, Milan, and Zurich. Julius Baer's Lifestyle Index ranks 25 cities by analysing residential property, cars, business class flights, school, degustation dinners and other luxuries. The bank surveyed high-net-worth individuals with bankable household assets of US$1 million or more from February to March 2025. Syria signs $800 mn port deal with UAE-based company

Syria signed an $800 million deal with UAE-based company DP World yesterday to develop the port of Tartus, state media reported, as the new authorities continue their efforts to support post-war reconstruction. Following the toppling of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, the new Islamist authorities have worked to reconnect the country to global companies and kickstart reconstruction after 14 years of civil war. 'In the presence of President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, an agreement was signed between the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports and DP World, valued at $800 million, as a strategic step aimed at enhancing port infrastructure and logistics services in Syria,' state-run news agency SANA said. Following the signing of the deal, DP World CEO Sultan Bin Sulayem said Syria's economy had 'significant assets, including the Port of Tartus, which represents an opportunity to transport and export many Syrian industries.' In a statement also shared by state media, he pledged to make Tartus 'one of the best ports in the world.' DP World operates dozens of marine and inland ports and terminals globally, particularly in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The Syrian civil war devastated the country's infrastructure, and the new authorities hope to use the lifting of Western sanctions to attract investments and fuel reconstruction efforts. Qutaiba Badawi, head of the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, said the parties were 'not merely signing a technical agreement, but we are laying the foundation for a new phase of field and maritime work in Syria, repositioning ourselves on the regional and international economic map.' In May, Damascus signed a 30-year contract with French shipping giant CMA CGM to develop and run the port of Latakia. That same month, Syria signed a $7 billion energy deal with a consortium of Qatari, Turkish, and US companies as part of efforts to revive its crippled power sector.

Bahrain Joins Digital Superhighway : Seef Becomes Tech Gateway

TDT | Manama • Cable lands near Seef • Connectivity capacity boosted tenfold • Supports Economic Vision 2030 Bahrain has officially joined the world's elite digital infrastructure network following the landing of the 2Africa Pearls submarine cable system near Seef District on June 4, marking a transformative leap in global connectivity and digital capacity for the Kingdom. Global Gateway With an investment of US$205 million, the arrival of the world's longest submarine cable places Bahrain at the centre of a digital superhighway stretching 45,000 kilometres. The cable's high-speed data capacity is set to reinforce Bahrain's position as a digital hub and significantly boost its potential to attract tech-driven investment, innovation, and high-skilled jobs. The cable landing ceremony was attended by His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, and Khalid Al Osaimi, Chief Executive Officer of stc Bahrain. Officials confirmed the ground connection process was completed in record time. Strategic Synergy Dr. Shaikh Abdullah highlighted the move as a key milestone in achieving Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030. He stressed the importance of public-private partnerships, describing the collaboration with stc Bahrain as a model for how national goals can be accelerated through joint ventures. 'This project marks a qualitative leap that strengthens Bahrain's global connectivity and supports its ambitions in the digital economy,' he said. Al Osaimi noted that the new system would multiply the country's existing connectivity by ten times. He said the move supports the Kingdom's economic diversification agenda and elevates its status as a regional leader in the ICT sector. Future-Proof Infrastructure The 2Africa Pearls cable system is designed to support a massive 180 terabits per second, making it the only submarine cable in the GCC capable of meeting surging demand from data-heavy platforms like cloud computing, online gaming, and content streaming. Its low latency and high bandwidth are also expected to accelerate the growth of emerging technologies such as 5G, AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT), while delivering more reliable internet performance to consumers and businesses alike. With this digital milestone, Bahrain is now positioned to serve as a crucial node in the global data exchange map.
