DK schools switch to online classes as rain holidays continue

Time of India3 days ago
Mangaluru: With the district administration announcing back-to-back holidays due to incessant rain, certain schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada have switched to online mode.
Currently, some schools are having internal exams and have informed parents about the possibility of online classes if the rain holidays continue.
So far, schools have remained shut for more than seven days in the district. According to the weather forecast, the region will continue to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days. The schools have informed that online classes have started for those in high school and above.
One of the schools situated near Kulai shared that they started online classes a few days ago, as children are losing out on academics due to rain holidays. "We will continue to have online classes whenever rain holidays are announced," informed the school's office.
Sr Melissa, principal of Mount Carmel Central School, said that currently, students are having exams. "We have informed the parents that they will be starting online classes if there are rain holidays after the completion of the examination," she said, adding that parents have responded positively.

However, there are some schools that avoid the online mode for a reason—it gives children an excuse to access gadgets. "We have all the facilities required to host online classes; however, we avoid it. The reason is that this gives children an excuse to access gadgets beyond class hours. The parents go to work, and their online activities go unmonitored. Even when we send homework through WhatsApp groups, we specify the time required to complete or copy it down in their notebook," said Mahesh J Shetty of Bala Vikas English Medium School, Mani.
On the other hand, parents have expressed happiness over the district administration announcing the rain holidays well in advance, instead of at the last minute. Allen Rebello, a parent from Nagori, said that announcing it in advance or the night before has helped them plan their next day. "There were days last year when we woke our child early, dressed them to go to school, and received a message only to learn the school declared a holiday due to rain.
This year there is a relief," he said.

Flood alert issued along banks of Cauvery with inflow surging in Hogenakkal

Dharmapuri/Salem: A flood warning has been issued along the banks of Cauvery river, following discharge of excess water through 16 vent surplus gates of the Mettur dam and redirecting the water downstream into the river. With heavy rainfall in catchment areas of KRS and Kabini dams in Karnataka, the water inflow at Hogenakkal surged to 98,000 cusecs on Sunday. By 5pm on Sunday, the inflow increased to 88,000 cusecs, and by 7pm, it further climbed to 98,000 cusecs. Consequently, the Dharmapuri district administration prohibited bathing and coracle riding in the waterfall and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of tourism activities. It also issued a flood warning to residents living along the Cauvery river, advising them to seek safe shelter. The Hogenakkal police also conducted security operations along the Cauvery river and on the pathways leading to the waterfalls. Meanwhile, water resources department minister Durai Murugan said the inflow to Mettur dam has risen due to the release of excess water from dams in Karnataka. The dam's full capacity is 120 feet, and officials are urging farmers to manage the surplus water judiciously for optimal use. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cargo Ship Meets Pirates - Watch What the Captain Does Next! Power utility issues safety advisory for rainy season

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Maharashtra state electricity distribution company (MSEDCL) has urged consumers to exercise caution during the rainy season to avoid any untoward incidents. "People must stay away from electrical installations such as iron poles of street lights, wirings of public electrical systems and other MSEDCL equipment, including iron fences of transformers and fuse boxes. Heavy and continuous rainfall can make these items prone to incidents of electrocution," MSEDCL public relations officer for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar zone, Dnyaneshwar Ardad, said. He added, "Moist electrical equipment at home, switchboards of agricultural pumps too can become hazardous, increasing the risk of electrical accidents." Officials said people must be wary of power cables and poles affected due to uprooted trees or branches of trees during the season. "It is essential to stay away from them and not try to touch or remove them," Ardad said. "Ensure that no water or moisture is present around electrical switchboards or equipments. If your house or building has a tin roof or iron staircase, extra care should be taken to ensure no stray current is present," Ardad said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo For any electricity-related complaints, MSEDCL has appealed to consumers to contact toll-free numbers 1912, 1800-212-3435, or 1800-233-3435.
