Baseball: Suzuki hits 26th homer for 80th RBI as Cubs beat Red Sox

CHICAGO (Kyodo) -- Seiya Suzuki hit a three-run shot for his 26th home run and a National League-leading 80th RBI as the Chicago Cubs beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Friday.
Suzuki made his first trip to the plate after Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito (6-2) walked the first two batters. The Japanese outfielder then proceeded to swat the right-hander's first-pitch four-seamer to center at Wrigley Field to open his team's scoring.
"I saw a good pitcher struggling at the start of the game and wondered if he would come trying to hit the zone," Suzuki said. "I followed my senses and instinct."
This season, Suzuki, who also had a single in the third to go 2-for-4, has already amassed the most home runs and RBIs of his four-year Major League Baseball career.
"I wasn't thinking I'd be able to get so many RBIs and home runs," he said. "I'm a bit surprised, to be honest, but I want to keep them going."
Masataka Yoshida struck out as a pinch hitter in the eighth for the Red Sox as their 10-game winning run was snapped.

Baseball: Ohtani 1st Japanese to homer in 4 straight games

LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Shohei Ohtani homered for the fourth straight game in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 10-7 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, making him the first Japanese player to hit a home run in four consecutive MLB games. Ohtani launched his 36th home run of the season to left field with one runner on in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium, tying him for the National League lead with Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The three-time MVP, however, was hitless in his previous four at-bats, striking out twice. The NL West-leading Dodgers have lost 11 of the last 14 games. Japanese teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto started on the mound and got a no-decision after allowing three runs, one earned, and five hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one. The game was tied at 3 after five innings. The Twins extended their lead by scoring three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. Christian Vazquez went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Minnesota offense.

Baseball Teams Trying to Fight Off Japan's Torrid Summer Heat

News from Japan Sports Jul 23, 2025 08:30 (JST) Tokyo, July 23 (Jiji Press)--Japanese professional baseball teams are working on ways to protect their players and fans from the country's sweltering summer heat. On June 27, Tatsuya Imai, an ace pitcher for the Saitama Seibu Lions in the Pacific League of the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, or NPB, was replaced after suffering a heatstroke while pitching at a game held at the team's Belluna Dome stadium in the city of Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, against the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. The stadium, which has a roof but no outer walls, lacks an air-conditioning system that covers all corners of the facility. "We are taking the heat seriously as a challenge," an official said. Starting this month, large mist sprayers have been installed near spectator seats. For players, new commercial freezers equipped with ice packs have been set up under the dugout.
